Got to wonder with Malone Road if they are just striking while the iron is hot.
Clearly had his issues, having missed two festivals previously, and I don't recall a horse starting out this early that went on to Supreme success in recent years, surely a step up in trip beckons should he actually make the festival.

Why a step up in trip if he was to win a few over 2m?
I'd imagine they will get a few runs into him now while hes thriving, put him away for a couple of months and then get him back out for maybe one run before the festival.
Id say they want to get experience into him now while hes fit and well and then reassess come March where he fits in if he is still well.
If they were to wait, he picks up a niggle its harder to get the experience into him

Gordon has had two previous Ballymore winners, and both of them started over and won at 2m, so winning a few over the trip does not mean he is destined for that further down the line.
His profile does not scream Gordon Elliott Supreme horse to me. I backed him with a couple of free bets, through FOMO, but not before I had backed him for the Ballymore with cash.
The Cheveley park lot are absolute nightmare to sort through currently.

This race is a very good Graded race pointer, not just a rubbish summer race.
This Listowel Festival 2M Novice Hurdle is historically a good race for the summer and a gateway race into
- the Grade 3, 2M Novice Hurdle at Tipperary 3 weeks later, and then
- the 2M Grade 1 Royal Bond in early December.
The last four winners of this Listowel race have used as their build-up race to a 2M Grade 3 race at Tipperary two/three weeks later, with good success.
- Two have won that Grade 3 and two have placed 2nd in it.
- Penhill was one of those winners, and last year Turnpike Trip was the other.
Last 5 years
2019 - Turnpike Trip won the Listowel race and the Grade 3 at Tipp, then went on to the 2M Grade 1 Royal Bond at the start of December and was 4th to Envoi Allen.
2018 - Triplicate, Aramon (were 1st and 2nd at Listowel) and Quick Grabim (Winner of the Grade 3 @Tipperary) had also gone to the Royal Bond from this Listowel/Tipperary route, in 2018, filling the first 3 places in the Grade 1 Royal Bond.
- Eglantine Du Seuil was 3rd in the Listowel race in 2018 behind Triplicate and Aramon, then won the Mares Novice Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival - on her next start!
2017 - Morgan was the winner at Listowel, was 2nd in the Tipp Grade 3 next time out, and finished 4th in the Grade 1 Royal Bond.
2016 - Penhill was the 2016 winner at Listowel, then won the Grade 3 at Tipp and was 4th in the Grade 1 Royal Bond.
This was the 3rd win of his 4 summer runs before he went on to win the Bartlett over 3M the following March.
2015 - Long Dog had an almost similar route, but via the 2M4F Novice at Listowel, and won the Grade 1 Royal Bond.
------------------------------------------------------------
If Jon Snow runs, then he will probably be the highest rated runner starting the Listowel race for some time, with an OR of 145.
if anything beats him at level weights then they will have to be very good.
His last race was his 3rd novice hurdle win on the trot, and was over 2M7F, but as Penhill showed - a stayer can win this 2 mile race, and still go on to be a 3M champion.
Whatever wins next Wednesday will quite possibly go to the 2M Grade 3 at Tipperary next time out, and then to the Royal Bond (Envoi Allen's first Grade 1 win last season).
It could well be the plan for Malone Road to progress through these Listowel-Tipperary 2M races and on to the Grade 1 Royal Bond.
It is a race to watch very closely.
This Listowel meeting is the follow-on Festival from Galway, mixed flat and NH and goes on for a week, in the same way.
Good horses run here ever year.Last edited by Saxon Warrior; 17 September 2020, 04:33 PM."Journeys to Glory, breathing in his head".

If he keeps winning over 2m, showing the speed for the trip i dont see Gordy stepping him up.

He is only a novice until December.
It could be the Stayers Hurdle or novice chasing"Journeys to Glory, breathing in his head".

I was taking a swipe at Malone Road rather than making a case for Jon Snow.
To think he'll end up graded class is loopy stuff. "if he isn't" - absolutely no chance!?! (not literally, but come on?)
Malone Road will need to be walloping him to be good enough for a Novice event at Cheltenham.
Jon Snow won't be winning a handicap either, he's not been campaigned as a handicap plot, he's just not as good as the name/silks hoped he'd be.
