  • Captain Kangaroo runs tomorrow. Fully expect him to step up on his last run which he looked like he badly needed. He looks to have a winning chance. Captain Kangaroo/Captain Guinness double anyone??

A place to discuss the National Hunt Season. Share your thoughts and tips on the Grand National, King George as well as the major racing festivals like Punchestown and the Dublin Racing Festival!

I appreciate that its early in the season, but I'm quite certain that by this time last year, we'd seen some really taking performances and some very good novices taking each other on. Willie in particular normally has a battalion of quality animals and we've just seen so so little from his geldings at this stage.

Don't get me wrong, I fully accept that the likes of Appreciate It, Ferny Hollow, Dusart etc. could all be very good, but at this moment in time, we just don't know. I'm just finding it very difficult to get excited by any of them.
This time last year Shishkin had fallen in a maiden hurdle, Monkfish had been beaten by Diol Ker and Envoi did what Envoi does

His stablemate Metier might be the one to be stepped up in trip given he started out over 2m2f and was a middle distance flat horse. I also wonder whether they think Metier's better right handed given his campaign so far over hurdles since switching from Andy Slattery. His improved runs on the flat were also right handed.

The UK will have a hand to play in the Supreme and Boothill and Dusart two are the most likely candidates so far, unless I've missed a key race along the way? Anyone have an eye on anything else this side of the Irish Sea?
Boothill and dusart are the obvious ones for me too, but i am keeping an eye on one of Tom Symonds novices, Llandinabo lad.. Symonds is taking him to the Tolworth hurdle. Symonds does well with this type, only caveat would be if he decides to bypass cheltenham with him like he did with song for someone or and of course if hes good enough.

Yeah, was going to point out Shishkin, and the previous years winner, Klassical Dream, hadn't been seen at this point either.

Still time for Willie, or someone else to send out a decent type.

Though I can understand why it probably feels a little underwhelming currently. I was looking at the market thinking exactly the same until I looked into it a little bit more.

I think we've seen one or two decent enough performances to start getting some sort of picture anyway though.

            • Is it not an accepted view that this seasons novices are generally behind as many missed introductions at the back end of last season ?

              • Plenty of time, there is at least 6 potentially nice novices Willie hasn't sent out yet.

Ruby gave Appreciate It a nice little Ballymore plug on the Road to cheltenham.

                • Re Boothill....has a Taunton winner ever gone on to win at Cheltenham? The courses are so far apart it is untrue.

                  • On watching the road to Cheltenham was interesting Lydia was happy to ask ruby about faugheen being injured as it’s in the public domain and Willie has come out and stated it himself, but the majority of questions on Twitter was to ask ruby if Ferny hollow is okay, and Lydia stated they’ll be no more asking ruby if Mullins horses are well.

Something doesn’t add up for me personally and gut feeling is that something is wrong with Ferny hollow.

                    • Decent performance by Boothill today. Though i'd still imagine there's plenty more to come out soon he's still a fair price considering what we've seen so far in the Supreme and Ballymore.

The 2 mile novice hurdle at Kempton on Boxing Day could be up next for him:

He certainly looked the part at Taunton, travelling easily behind the leaders and jumping well before seizing the initiative going to the second last which he winged like a seasoned handicapper.

Boothill then readily drew clear with Sean Bowen sensibly pushing him out to the line to educate him. He does everything so easily at home, has bags of speed, and it was a relief to see him confirm the impression of his Kempton triumph.

I’ll see how he comes out of the race before making firm plans but one option would be the novice hurdle at Kempton’s Christmas meeting that we won with If The Cap Fits a few years ago.

Had similar thoughts. Although the point of the show isn’t to confirm horses well-being so I can see why Lydia was frustrated. It’s not their place to break news. I doubt Closutton want Ruby reporting every setback on a Thursday evening as well.

Sanctuaire won a novice hurdle in Taunton on his last run before the Fred Winter. Cant think of any other than that.

Yeah, good spot. It does happen then.

                            • Just one of those useless bits of info that sticks in your head, Paul Nichols seems to like the track for his Juvenile hurdlers for some reason.
