Pre race I think you was alone, however post race I don't think many would/could argue at all, and now many would also agree with you

She was also one of your stronger opinions so fair play

        • I'm loving all this chat about people thinking both Benie and Honeysuckle may be going chasing as I'm keen on Concertista!

          • I think if the connections of Honeysuckle said they were staying over hurdlers, Benie would go chasing again and be the favourite for the Mares Chase.

However, as they've already been schooling Honeysuckle, I think that's unlikely.

I don't expect to see them rematch ever again.

Also, I think winning the first Mares Chase, with the Mares Hurdle winner isn't as big a deal as it would be winning proper races/ the non Mares equivalents.

Despite lacking experience, if Salsaretta is favourite for a race, to just assume it's tougher than the novice hurdlers isn't justified for me.

A long way to go though and a lot of things need to fall in to place for that to be proved correct though, so backing Honeysuckle is risky now.

I've risked it in a double with BDD Mares Hurdle, as I fell I can make the case it's related and both would shorten... but there is a huge dollop of summer time conjecture and guesswork there.

There is only Envoi Allen in the Marsh market that it's better than her?

I'll be staggered if the Stayers' isn't mentioned by connections at some point. She'll get 7lbs from the current lot.

I know connections gave Annie Power a crack at it, but had enough speed to win a Champion Hurdle, something I don't feel Benie has.

Her 3m wins are right up there with the best of her form, IMO.

Plenty of water under the bridge yet, but for me, at this stage, I think it'll be business as usual for Honeysuckle in the Mares Hurdle, Benie to remain over hurdles in the Stayers and a different mare altogether winning the Mares Chase.

That does make some sense but gives seemingly no recognition that she's been schooling?

Are you comfortable completely disregarding that piece of information?

It wouldn't be the first time a horse has schooled and not gone over fences I'm sure, but I can only see them staying over hurdles if the Benie Des Dieux connections announced they'd be going chasing... and I can't see them playing their hand first.

Agree. They have always said Honey's future is over fences . She's already won the Mares. For me she would come up short in a Cheltenham Churdle . I can't see her going Stayers so that leaves the Mares Chase or taking on the boys in what looks in paper much tougher assignments. I've backed Benie for Mares Chase as well as her price is ridiculous but haven't a clue what they'll do with her

She's won a PTP well already, even taking schooling into account I can't completely disregard the Mares Chase, as noted it was just at this present stage.

The problem is connections have Elfile (finished 3rd in the Mares hurdle) and/or Minella Melody who will appreciate a step up in trip from that Mares Novice Hurdle run this year. Which again, may prove to be a deciding factor in whether they pursue fences with Honeysuckle.

In reality 3/1 'any race' is probably the right call I guess. I think it's getting harder to cash out bets in time, bookies more on the ball than ever before so not sure I'm going to risk backing her in both then not being able to cash out.

                    • Any owner/trainer of a horse with multiple G1 wins setting a season target of a G2 race whilst the horse is at her/his peak loses my respect.
I still don’t believe Honeysuckle, Benie or PTKO for that matter will land at the Mares chase, if chasing is the decision then as a proven G1 performer target the G1 chases...

                      • Ricci has won most of big races except the Gold Cup. BDD for a Mares chase and gold cup in 2022 looks like a plan.

                        • I’d make it long odds on we’ll never see benie over a fence again

She’ll be 10 come March and 11 if the Gold Cup bid is the plan of attack.
I’d struggle to back any 10/11 year old outside of the Foxhunters at the festival and these Mares can just fall out of love with the game and pull up stumps, there won’t have been many 11yo Mares in training in recent years.

Unfinished business in the Mares hurdle would be my guess at this stage...

                            • They won’t risk her over a fence much more higher chance of injury and more chance keeping her sound over hurdles. They’ll want her 100% for breeding.

                              • I see Sky have faugheen to win the foxhunters at 9-1, what are everyone's thoughts on the chances of Willie sending him down that route would certainly interest me and I think 9-1 would be a fair price for surely what would be the class act in the race
