This happened quite a while ago. Oddschecker seem to be keeping the blue up there for quite some time as someone else mentioned. It does seem as though horses are getting cut very early this year

I think punters are bored and adding ante post multi’s for interest, so the price change is unlikely to be a series of pros hitting the 4/1, more likely the horse has been included in so many multis it’s the accumulation effect...

Yes I was on Envoy.....Backed him at 200-1 with Ladbrokes in Tewkesbury on the way to the track on the day of the race.
Absolutely sensational stuff, take a bow, wont be many that ever back a winner at that price well done

At last, we have finally identified the person who was cheering as NC crossed the line ! My mate and I have always wondered because other than you presumably it was deathly silence. Someone near me asked who had won and followed up with "Norton bloody who", hence the derivation of my own username. No I hadn't backed him, in fact I hadn't even heard of NC until he'd won but that day was my first live experience of Cheltenham and I have been hooked ever since.

Cheers Billymag, yeah that was some day.

The price was crazy - it was purely because the horse was trained by a dairy farmer who kept him in a shed with some bantams.

He was 3rd in the Cathcart the previous season finishing like a train after Hywel Davies left him too much to do because he'd never ridden the horse before. And he'd never been out of the first 3 in his 3 previous runs at Cheltenham before the GC with a record of 312.

There were only 12 runners in the GC that year and Dessie went off odds-on - but he hated Cheltenham and rarely showed his best form there even though he won a GC himself.

I'm sure if this site had been running back then many here would have had a nibble - specially when Lads went 200-1 on the day.

You're absolutely right Norton's -I was going bonkers and everyone else was in mourning because Dessie had been turned over. I cheered myself hoarse. Collected the cash from Lads in Tewkesbury and went off to Butlins in Minehead for a Des O'Connor weekend with the family. We never got to see Des but boy did we celebrate! My dad bought me a horse and jockey weather vane which I painted in NC"s black and white hoops and green cap and put it on the garage roof.

Sixteen stone Sirrell Griffiths used to train him on the beach at Newgale in Pembrokeshire so when Graham McCourt climbed on board carrying 12 stone it must have felt like his birthday. NC received the freedom of Carmarthen after the race.

              Great days.

              • There has been some comment on this thread about Shishkin been caught for tactical speed. He seemed to have to be pushed at times during the race to get in to/hold position. My observation was that he seemed to make up 4l swinging off the bend when Aba was cruising, surely this shows speed as Aba is seen as a very speedy sort?
Anyway, I have also been thinking is this just the style of "Nico", he seems never to be cruising in the big races and seemingly gets annimated early. Its interesting that there has been comment "seemed to lack tactial speed" made re both Shishkin and Santini. It has to be commented that Altior also has has to have the Nico push.

Yeah I agree. I think santini is certainly lacking some toe and is out and out stayer. With regard Shishkin, he is still a novice and made some obvious novice like mistakes (3rd hurdle for instance) which cost him ground early on and therefore if anything his tactical pace got him out of trouble. NICO has his critics and has a different ride style to someone like davy who appears to try and make as little movement as possible (some describe it as show boating) to make the horse look like its got more in the tank than maybe it does. Going back to SANTINI For me RUBY WALSH OR BARRY GARRITY wins the gold cup with santini this year. GARRITY was getting a tough time from some critics but this year he proved himself a class jockey. I dont put NICO up there with the afore mentioned.

I’d pay thousands for a Des OConnor weekend right now.
                    Even if he’s dead.
                    Is he dead ?

                    • DES is alive.
Hopefully not in a care home

                      • Had an ante post treble going into Cheltenham of

                        Abracadabras for the supreme
                        Envoi Allen for the ballymore
                        Thyme hill for the Bartlett

Didn’t play each way which I probably should of done looking back and felt hard done by not to collect! They were decent prices too.

So I’ve followed that 2019 bumper form over again to my only ante post bet of the 2021 festival which is.

                        Abracadabras - Champion hurdle - 10/1
                        Thyme hill - stayers hurdle - 20/1
                        Envoi Allen - Marsh - 4/1

Done them as a trixie and a straight treble. A month or so on from placing the bet im starting to think if they see envoi as a gold cup horse he could possibly go to the RSA. Can also see the RSA being the best novice race by a long way next season.

Des was on the Chase last week Q , could have been a replay though.
from 10 years ago . If it wasn't , he looked sharp as a Button .

                            • I’d consider Nico to be my favourite jockey at present, like McCoy he can squeeze that extra 10% out of a horse from an impossible position and get them back in the race and whether it’s the horse or Nico but many of his rides accelerate in the last 100 yards.

                              • Don't get me wrong I was not criticising Nico, I was suggesting that his style may look like he is asking the horse questions, where other jockeys would look quieter. He gets the job done done, thats what counts.
