Think everyone is over reacting a little re Magic Daze. It was her first run of the season and she wouldn't be anywhere near fully wound up at this point. A few of Henry's better horses have needed their runs and have appeared to blow up at the end of their races, Annie G being another. Robbie Power was searching for the better ground as Henry has already said very soft ground does not suit her. She deserves another chance. Its March that counts.

      This ^^^^^

Very few horses will rock up at Cheltenham with unbeaten records. Happy to forgive any horse their first run(s) of the season and also not get carried away with good early season form either.

Lots of miles to go still.

        Q) How many Arkle Winners, in the last 10 years, lost first time out Novice Chasing?

I dont know the answer (yet) just putting a question out there.

UDS fell on debut & Duc De Gen Lost to A Plus Tard starting over 19f. A few have lost on route going back, the win lto or recent 1-1-1 on paper is the generic published trend.

            Great stats.

I was thinking maybe Western Warhorse, but thats more because he won at 33s than knowing how his debut went.

(UPDATE: and on checking WW's form it was 1 Run 1 Win in a novice chase before the Arkle, thats great work to win from such little experience)

Yeah he springs to mind for many but he actually won on chase debut, lost two hcap hurdles that season prior to the switch to chasing mind.

I mean she's been ready to run for like 2/3 weeks now so she's probably fitter than most.

Flat track, 2miles....I'm thinking more Aintree than Cheltenham but i haven't lost complete hope.

Her best run by far was at the Fez on decent ground. She could be another mare that simply comes to life at Cheltenham on Spring ground.

As long as it's not a disaster, I'm always prepared to forgive a horse its first run of the season. The time to make a call is next time. Was I impressed? No. Was it a disaster? Certainly not? It was her chasing debut and she's entitled to improve significantly from there.

I'm genuinely surprised that so many cashed out, and I'm one for having my finger right over the button. I didn't see people falling over themselves to ditch The Bosses Oscar for example.
Luck is a dividend of sweat. The more I sweat, the luckier I get.

Yeah, no cash out from me just yet. Pretty much the same opinion as you on her currently.

Will wait for the next run.

Magic Daze looked fully wound up and someone (Ruby?) said she looked the type who would give herself a hard time on the gallops. I can't see her staying the trip in the Mares with her style of running but she could be a player in the Grand Annual.

The other angle I have at the moment is the thought that the Mares Novice might have been over-rated. I'd like to see runners come out in open company to get a better handle on a comparison with the geldings.

This has been on my mind too Archie. De Bromhead would have as good a good handle as anyone though, and Magic Daze has been mentioned by connections as a possible for the Arkle.

Have to say there were a number of highly hyped mares going into the race last season and I was of the same mind, but the third came out and won a listed race and Skyace won the G1 novice hurdle at Punchestown with a few of these behind so I'm inclined to give them a while before I confirm that view...

Mighty Blue won a flat race and has always seemed better on the flat than over hurdles. Skyace merely confirmed the Festival form. Telmesomethinggirl was disappointing at Punchestown.
