Champ is a far better hurdler than chaser.
I expect to see CH in this and Champ in the stayers hurdle.
I would be very interested in what Hendo says re CH and yesterday.
Chantry House always looks in trouble when met with a proper pace - he gets away with it vs inferior opposition.
Recent events make it look that way, but Champ couldn't win over hurdles at Cheltenham, before winning a shit hot RSA.
I think thats what we all expected and thats certainly what the market says, but it wouldn't be beyond the realms of possibility.

You may be right the CH. But I have said for a while now that the Gold Cup is the perfect race for him, the track and distance, and hopefully fairly decent ground.
Whether he’s good enough to figure in the finish of one, that’s another matter of course. From what I have seen I think he can.
Champ did win that RSA, but last season’s jumping was not good, and he’s come out and been impressive over hurdles.
I think his connections will do right by him and let him do what he enjoys most. He would not have enjoyed last season imo, and certainly not the Gold Cup!!

He had a back issue. If jumping fences exacerbated that issue then yes, it would have bothered him and explains his poor performances, but if that issues is sorted then why not go for this. He was bought and bred to win a Gold Cup, not a stayers hurdle. It's not like time is on their side either. Were he 7 rising 8, or even 8 rising 9 they could go stayers with next season in mind. If he's ever going to win a GC he has one shot, and its 2022. Imagine him pissing up in the stayers and wondering what could have been.

It will all be down to his trainer in the end.
JP will be fine with what Hendo decides. And hendo does tend to look after his horses, they are like his children!!. All the evidence points to the Stayers imo.

          • Seeing CH perform in open company yesterday makes me wonder about the level of form from The Marsh. Not exactly inspiring imo. JP will need a runner in this & 10yo don't win Stayers Hurdles.

              That's a good point.
Connections would surely fancy that after watching MI and CH yesterday. Obviously kempton very different but it would enthuse me if I were them.

It will not de the owners need for a runner.
It will be which race the horse will perform better in and have the best chance of winning.
If that we’re equal then the GC would probably be the choice. But it’s become clear now that the Stayers would be his race.
And forget his age, just look at his last race when not fully fit.

Trainer but he’s near enough favourite for the stayers and he can’t jump. Owner I realise that but he’ll be 10 in a week so I need him to run here.

I think you’d normally be right, but in JP’s case, he will certainly want a GC horse. That might be Champ, CH, or even Fakir.

Yes he would want a Gold Cup horse, but it will not one that his trainer gives him sound reasoning why that horse should not run in the Gold Cup.
                        Thats the relationship they have.

Of course. He’d slipped my mind. Maybe one I’ll get in the book before he runs today.

Yep I think he’s quite interesting . Forgive the pedantry but it’s tomorrow he is running. I think he’ll run a big race in the Savills ...should he win and overturn the current fav it would be tricky to predict what price he’d be....Sky are offering 125 savills gc double.

All one big day between 27th and 30th Dec isnt it?

Yes, I’ve had a little of the 125/1 for both and a slightly bigger bit on just the GC. I could see him running in gamely behind APT and going 3rd fav.

He mustve been schooling very badly for them to even consider running in the long walk
