  • De Bromhead told the Racing Post: "Journey With Me has been really good since Christmas – he's in great form. He might go to Leopardstown for the Dublin Racing Festival, or else we could wait for Naas the following week for an auction novice hurdle [on February 12]."
Anyone confirm the distance of that Naas race please?

2m 3f I believe ? BOF stated connections may have gone this route. Makes sense.

2m 3.5f, auction race. Final is at Punchestown and is worth 75k - makes total sense to get qualified and have that race as a back up plan (and hope for softer ground at Naas)

          • Cheers all. Nicely timed replies!

Does that lean us towards Ballymore as a likely target then? Or do we think purely to qualify for that Punchestown race as an option, so no impact on planned Cheltenham target (until after the Naas race at least)

My immediate reaction would be 2m 6f would be a better prep for AB than 2m 3f... But every chance I'm wrong.

            I appreciate the Ballymore is 2m 5f...

If going to the Naas race rather than DRF, I'd be more worried about Bartlett being the target than at any other point this season. That said, I'd be happier if they went to the easier race pre-festival as long as they then went to the Bartlett...

              • I think the most important thing to consider is where will the best ground be for JWM. All season long, they have re-iterated that the horse wouldn't be run unless there was some soft ground somewhere hence the late start for him.

With Leopardstown not due any rain from now until the DRF then I'd assume that the ground is being took into account and not necessarily his festival aim.

Yep, that's also a fair shout, but there's a lot of spinning plates that could move him away from the AB compared to the start of the season if he does end up going to Naas. I say this as someone who isn't coming close to any cashout or anything like that yet and has been adamant he goes AB all year. For info the spinning plates I see if he goes Naas are:

                  - missing both of HDB's key AB trial (Clonmel G3 mid Feb, original plan) and the Irish AB trial (DRF, current plan?)
                  - GC now going to AB rather than Bally as everyone thought
                  - being qualified for a season finale worth more(?) than either festival race when they could have other runners there
                  - jumped slightly right handed at leopardstown for me

Not throwing the towel in yet and if he is still in line for AB, the Naas race would definitely be an easier and could be more suitable prep if ground suggests that, but as I said just a bit more wary of his target now than any other time this season

Spot on. Ground conditions important prior to the Fez.

                    • I wouldn't read too much into it guys if he does go to the Naas race. It'll be an easier prep for him which is all that matters now.

Tend to agree, but Indo ran over 3m in his pre Spuds prep.....and trainers tend to favour routes......this might be a clue that Ballymore is the more likely?

I've broadly taken approach on all these poss switches to load up whenever they are longer on one of their poss races...mostly on exchanges, plus various doubles.

In reality going and other horses likely to determine final decisions........tho given weather and hence low water table....going will not be that soft whatever now....Chelt drains quickly re anything nearer time unless water table high

                        • Classic Getaway declared on Monday. Not sure whether a win will see him turn up at the Festival but it will be good to see him out again.

                              • The Nice Guy still 33/1 with Unibet for the Albert Bartlett and Willie has said he expects him to be on the Cheltenham team for the owner.

Ramillies is 33/1 NRNB with WH too
