There are no decent competitors for the Graded hurdles in GB. He could win that race with a sub-160 performance.

Agreed. The race has been won before by future Stayers winners so it's a decent stepping stone and a good prize. Don't think he'd be competitive in a Champion Hurdle so it'll be the Stayers or wait until Aintree. He does love Cheltenham though.

      • I've backed Champ at 25s for this, the question is... Am I mental?

Not at all, he’ll be spot on after his 7f prep at Wolverhampton…

                Behind paywall:

It doesn't look like it will be a white Christmas, but it could well end up being a profitable one for Gavin Cromwell and the trainer has lifted the lid on his running plans for the festive period, headed by Stayers’ Hurdle hero Flooring Porter.

As far as reappearance runs go, Flooring Porter's seasonal debut effort at Navan was an unsatisfactory one, with Cromwell’s stable star crashing to the turf two out when travelling best.

That fall has not dented confidence in Flooring Porter, however, with Cromwell revealing his dual Grade 1 winner seems to have been sparked into life ahead of his bid for back-to-back Christmas Hurdle wins at Leopardstown on December 28.

Cromwell explained: "He has been great since Navan. He had a fair fall in the Lismullen Hurdle but came out of it one hundred per cent and has been very good at home since.”

He added: “We took him to Navan for a gallop last Monday and he went very well, so we couldn’t be happier with him. It’s all systems go for the Christmas Hurdle and we’re looking forward to it.”

                • What’s the thinking behind Champ not being able to go right handed over fences but he’s fine to go that way over hurdles

I watched a podcast with Joshua Stacey the other night and he said that Champ had schooled poorly and that's why they have reverted back to hurdles. It sounds like the back issues may not have been fully resolved.

Which does make you think he will probably struggle over hurdles too if his back is that bad

he could barely get off the ground in the gold cup

Can’t be the reason he can jump hurdles right handed but not fences though? Just seems another bit of bizarre reasoning from Nicky.

I watched the same one. I’m not touching Champ with a barge pole until I see how he runs. If I miss the price, so be it, but he’s got so much to prove after that last run and the conflicting signals coming out from Hendo.
