I fancy Chantry Horse to retain the form line with EdR, but we are talking about a handicapper here - improver yes, but a horse we have little form lines with

Knowing me, I've probably discarded to Gold Cup winner in Chantry House

Has there been many Gold Cup winners where the trainers have come out saying they have "speed for shorter".... "I think his future lies in the staying division"? Just out of interest
    Sizing John?

We've only seen Chantry House over 3 miles once so he might improve again for going up in trip. He's the one I like most out the JP horses; him, Champ and Fakir D'oudairies. However, he's got to beat more than those two!

I'm going to struggle with CH until I see him run 1-2 races this season, and even then... I'll get it wrong lol

Seems to me that they would still prefer Champ to prove his GC credentials. Why, I don't know but but if he does then I can see Chantry House going to the Ryanair. Champ does appear to be Hendos/JP's favourite son and they are determined to make him succeed.

Chantry House was bought for 300,000. He was bought to one day be a Gold Cup horse, not a RyanAir horse!

Not a significant factor for me, especially when the owner isn’t sort of a few quid

Agree, the price of a horse becomes far less significant the more times you've seen it race.

A very poor buy, it's the sort of sum you could half stomach if it was a horse like Min who was rumoured to be exceptional and if was to be sold after the supreme. Regarding worse ever so many Yank horses go for silly money and achieve nothing, no more so than "The Green Monkey"

He was electric around Cheltenham (old course) last November when I reckon he ran to a mark somewhere in the 160s. Harry Skelton quote: 'I haven't ridden many around this track that jump like that. He was unreal. I was never worried about the trip and he's an out-and-out galloper.' (RP). He then disappointed a couple of times before bouncing back after a wind op to win the 2m 4f G1 Novice at Aintree cosily. Harry Skelton quote: 'Dan has probably never thought about a horse as much as he has Protektorat this year. He's a horse we all knew had a hell of lot of ability but he hasn't been the easiest.' Dan Skelton quote: ' I didn't actually expect that to happen, I said to the owners that I thought today was a short-term plan to get a long-term result next year. I didn't expect him to win.' (Both RP) . Hopefully they've found the key to him going forward. Officially rated 154 he's reportedly being aimed at the Paddy Power Gold Cup @ Cheltenham (possibly via the Colin Parker Memorial @ Carlisle) according to Dan Skelton. (SL).
I think Protekorat may end up in the Ultima this year, looking at that Aintree form he's beaten the shunter. A horse who is a top class handicapper but not a graded horse based on his next results. Very difficult to find something to oppose Allaho at this stage I'm looking for a big priced alternative but nothings jumping out.

Backed him in both the Ryanair ( originally , after this year's fez, ) and the Gold Cup more recent . After his win at Aintree - 3m.
I'm all aboard the Gold cup train with him now though. .. - Chantry House.

Such a tough race and usually favours betting later because finding the winner of the Ryanair is a bit like finding the best horse that won't win the QMCC, or the best horse that won't win the Gold Cup.

Trainers like Willie Mullins have such an embarrassment of riches, he can target the Ryanair with horses that would be competitive in both the above, but probably couldn't win it.

My approach with the Ryanair revolves around this question - would or could the horse in question win, or at least be in the mix in a QMCC or Gold Cup?

Heavily open to interpretation, but I think the answer to the above is a firm yes for 8 out of the last 10 winners of the Ryanair. It filters out all the good but not potential great horses. Protektorat looks interesting, but when I ask myself the above question, its a firm resounding no, so I move on. Loads like this and its helps put lines through horses you'd otherwise be lured into backing.

Funnily enough I requested prices for Protektorat in the Gold Cup before taking the plunge with him in this. I think he'll stay 3m just not sure about 3m 2f on the new course.
