Allaho. Elimay and honey as the 3 most certain target/chances and potentially least competitive races too.. When i say least competitive, its in contrast to the other graded races.
Allaho is an obvious one to play in the shorty multiples although Envoi Allen and Energumene could also end up here. I know neither of those have this down as their primary target just yet but it's certainly possible.
I'm still not entirely convinced Allaho will not be given another chance over 2 miles particularly left handed. His early entries will answer that for me. If he did go Ryanair again then clearly he'd be the one to beat . Out of interest, how many dual winners of the Ryanair has there been ??

In the Cheveley Park thing that was on here a few weeks ago a king George entry was mentioned as a possibility
Allaho looks hard to beat here but Protektorat is interesting (@20s/25s generally) stepping out of novice company. He was electric around Cheltenham (old course) last November when I reckon he ran to a mark somewhere in the 160s. Harry Skelton quote: 'I haven't ridden many around this track that jump like that. He was unreal. I was never worried about the trip and he's an out-and-out galloper.' (RP). He then disappointed a couple of times before bouncing back after a wind op to win the 2m 4f G1 Novice at Aintree cosily. Harry Skelton quote: 'Dan has probably never thought about a horse as much as he has Protektorat this year. He's a horse we all knew had a hell of lot of ability but he hasn't been the easiest.' Dan Skelton quote: ' I didn't actually expect that to happen, I said to the owners that I thought today was a short-term plan to get a long-term result next year. I didn't expect him to win.' (Both RP) . Hopefully they've found the key to him going forward. Officially rated 154 he's reportedly being aimed at the Paddy Power Gold Cup @ Cheltenham (possibly via the Colin Parker Memorial @ Carlisle) according to Dan Skelton. (SL).

It’s a fair shout but they may keep him fresh for the Melling Chase at Aintree closer to the time one would imagine.
It's Allahos to lose isn't it?! I never saw the run v Chacun Pour Soi as the encouraging 2m experiment that some did, he didn't seem to travel or jump particularly well when the pace picked up, but he did stay on well after the last fence. There was no shame in the run but if it was the first time i'd ever seen the horse i'd say he looked like he was crying out for a step up in trip. We're all familiar with the manner of his victory in this last year, it'd be madness not to come back for a repeat. A quirky horse has found his niche.
The biggest danger at this point would be Envoi. Sounds like they're starting him off over 2m 4f again but GC the aim if possible. If that doesn't work out then this is the obvious fall-back, same colours but different yards and those colours are probably going to have to clash in something this year! I think Energumene will provide a very strong challenge to Shishkin for the CC and don't see him coming here, but i'll keep an open mind!
There are a few that may come into the reckoning, but Allaho was so impressive, Vautour like, that, provided he turns up to the race in the same condition as this year, I struggle to see what gets near him.
All this talk of going back over 2m at the festival is absolute tosh, IMO, Willie has Energumene and Chacun Pour Soi, what on earth would be the point of taking his easiest winner of the festival last season and sticking him a race against a horse like Shishkin, baffling talk. Literally the only argument I see that makes any sense is what Cheveley Park decide, but honestly, who really makes these calls?
As for the rest of the field, it will be interesting to see where Envoi Allen ends up, he could be a serious contender for both this and the Gold Cup if rediscovering his form and overcoming his injury without a problem.
I have a couple that interest me, that I may back soon and they are Defi Du Seuil & Royale Pagaille.
I've lost count the amount of times I've crabbed Defi for being a top class 2 miler and I remain stood by that opinion. I had him backed for the Ryanair the last two seasons and unfortunately he never turned up for that race. He will be 9, come the race next year, and it may be, as some have pointed out on here that he has just regressed, however, I believe the step up in trip, as it was during his novice season, will show him in better light. I see he's priced up at 33/1 with cash out, he's a two time previous festival winner, I think I can get onboard that!
Royale Pagaille is a little more difficult to get on board with and assess. He was another I crabbed after his win at Haydock, I thought his ratings were over rated, and as normal made my thoughts known on here about him However, I would find him really interesting if they were to come back in trip, which I thought they may do as Rich Ricci had Monkfish for the Gold Cup, but now that is back up in the air again, given him being out for the season now. I felt the form lines of Royale Pagailles victories at both flat track Kempton over 3m and his earlier Haydock run over 2m 5f, were stronger than the victory from his Haydock run in January, where it was more a staying race. The other issue I have with him currently is the ground. His only run with 'Good' in the description was the Gold Cup of this year, and that ended bitterly disappointingly though did finish the race lame. He has a fair few question marks so I'll leave him unbacked for the festival at this stage but he's on my radar, and still think he'll come good throughout the winter months, as so many of Venetias do.
