  • There is a bit of support around for Saint Sam & equally, Haut En Couleurs but horses from the previous years Triumph & Boodles have rarely followed up the following year. Only Apple’s Jade recently has followed up with a win in the Mares after placing in the Triumph. Footpad won the Arkle two years after his Triumph third and I would generally hold off backing horses coming out following their juvenile year.

Certainly in recent years, WPM’a runner in this race have come from mainly the previous years Ballymore or Bartlett. Obviously Bob at the top of the market looks strong but the 20/1 for both Gaillard du Mesnil & Stattler looks appealing based on his recent history of runners here from Closutton.

How many 5yo's go chasing the next year?

Most end up in no mans land over hurdles...

I think going over fences is worth looking at them case-by-case rather than the blanket hurdles-season opinion... (which is usually correct)

Don't like Saint Sam at all personally, don't think he'll ever end up a G1 type horse. Haut.... open minded.

They removed the age claim about 10 or so years ago to counter the trend of more mature French horses hoovering up big prizes and it did exactly as you say, left 5yo horses in no mans land.
There really should have been greater thought put into a second season hurdle programme, give these horses something to aim at that they can compete in.
The pre curser to the current ‘Plate’, or as it was known ‘The Mildmay of Flete’, was a chase restricted to novices and second season chasers, so there used to be some creative thinking amongst racings hierarchy…

        • I don't mind the route taken with Quilixios and Teauphoo, similar to Espoir D'allen, sticking to age related hurdles giving them more time to mature before a step up

Yep agree, but history shows us that for every Espoir D’Allen there are dozens of Ivanovic Gorbatovs…

The mildmay of flete was the same 2m 5f handicap it is now just a different name. I think you're confusing it with the Cathcart.

That may well be true BD.

                • Are we thinking if Bob doesnt get an entry today for the 16th that something is amiss? I still find it odd that he didnt take up the Faugheen chase on the 26th... given the beating of Master McShee by 16 lengths on chase debut he should have won this comfortabaly. With 60K euro for 1st place up for grabs seems strange to swerve.

If he does get an entry for Sunday are we assuming thats it for now until Chelteham? Or would the 3 weeks between now and the DRF be enough to squeeze another run in?

All in all i just think hes been really oddly campaigned for this. They set out their markers for middle distance fairly on so should have been able to map his path accordingly.

It would be a worry if no entry this Sunday that’s for sure, I think he will though and be going an easy route. That Limerick race would of been ideal for calendar placing but it can be deep ground there so maybe they set sight on this Punchestown target early on?

Going to be impossible to get another run into him in Ireland I think. Don’t think he’d be wanting to take on GDC in Dublin and there’s nothing else suitable. Even be struggling to get a run in the UK I think, there’s the Scilly isles where he’d probably have an easier assignment than the DRF but the same timing issues. Don’t think it’s been their finest hour how his season has been managed so far either myself I don’t really understand the decision not to run at Xmas or just before.

The deep ground and the fact that Rachael couldn't ride him swayed their decision to run on the 16th. They really want Rachael on board prior to the festival.

Its also the Envoi route from last season and BO wouldn't have been able to do Limerick and Punchestown.

Still will only be 2 runs before Cheltenham which isn't ideal but I can see them going it and then maybe take in 1/2 races after Cheltenham like Punchestown and maybe Aintree.

Where can you see this please? Really asking for future reference. The HRI website doesn't show entries until the window closes at midday.
