This constant changing of race names due to sponsorship changes does little for the history of the sport. While The Grand National and the Cheltenham Gold Cup naturally rise above all this, many other races, just don't. I guess it's low on the list of things for racing's rulers to concern themselves with. It nay matters what races are called, just so there is one corporate entity or other willing to stump up the prize money.

Those were the days - when the season proper kicked off with the "Mackeson".

Named my dog Pounentes after taking her for a walk round the course on race day before Pounentes won in 1983. The dog had a great time in the water jump.

Only gonna get worse I reckon - NH racing is really struggling on bringing prestige sponsors through at the moment, so you get lots of smaller companies trying to snap up a bargain for a couple of years.

Although cazoo and cinch are sponsoring everything that moves at the moment!

Agree, historically racing has relied on bookmakers for a huge chunk of sponsorship but with increased regulation and their trigger happy traders shutting people down their profits have to take a hit and that must impact on racing in years to come...

I still think of them as the Mackeson and Massey Ferguson, Paul.

The Mackeson was always the first big race of the NH season, I remember it well as a teenager, putting bets on it, in the bookies in the small town where I lived, before getting on the team bus to go and play football somewhere in Leicestershire.

Happy enough today with My Drogo. That's two prep races now at Cheltenham. You'd think that this race must be the plan despite Skelton earlier in the season making comments over Aintree being a target.

Agree. Very good experience over fences/course. He has every chance. Marsh definitely his race as well.

That was my thought too. He guessed at a few and left his hind legs trailing on one which made me gulp watching it. Not for me for the festival, but then I look at the current top ten in the market and there’s so many that won’t come here. Struggling to identify a decent challenger to Bob at this stage, especially if AI and Ferny both go to the Arkle.

The name changes are so confusing. I'm going to stay stubborn and keep referring to them as the JLT, RSA and 4 miler.

Bob entered over 2m2 at Ascot on Friday.

Imagine they are reluctant to run him in the grade one at Limerick over Christmas. Given this entry and the previous Cheltenham one.

Then i’d guess onto the Killiney Novice Chase mid January.

It would mirror his novice hurdle route very closely, in regards to length of time between runs and the gap between his last prep run and the festival.
