Or the year before when beaten by A Plus Tard at Leopardstown. He seems a horse that takes a run or two to get up to speed and blow off the cobwebs.

And this really does feel like the first weekend proper for the Mullins yard. TBF, Mullins was honest enough about his ground and gallop issues. That's maintaining this dominance for Gordon Elliott still. You'd feel Mullins will reap the rewards over Christmas.

      • 12/1 for Chacun Pour Soi now in a place.

I'd prefer than to Energumene at 4/1 before tomorrow.....

Only because it has huge potential to shorten up again. Is Greanateen really a better horse than CPS? He's 8/1

The risk with CPS is at least now in his price. It isn't with Energumene.

Not rushing to back anything though, but that'd be where I'd lean.

This race is over hyped too this year. Gutted I missed the podcast where Spectre and Jono were gushing about it.

If you are undercooked and make a mistake like that, it is going to take its toll doesn't matter how ahead you are on ratings. I'm not buying the doesn't travel over excuses, Just wasn't fit enough and jumped awfully. Nube Negra wants better ground and needs a couple months between races.

I'll wait to hear how Chacun comes out of this and then probably look to add him if 12s is still about
And 12’s is about the right price - it’s not a ‘bonus’ price.

          a) 2 of his last 3 starts he’s finished 3rd and last.

          b) both of these results have been when he’s travelled on a boat to England.

          c) he’ll be 10 in a few months time.

          d) is he regressing? Is it a similar pattern to Paisley Park, potentially? The age, the recent results.

12/1 is, all things told, not a bonus price, but about the ‘right’ price.

Of course he can win a Champion Chase.

But the bookmakers evidence, currently, suggest he’s going to have to perform to a career best in 3 months time, if Shishkin & Energumene run here.

          • You'll find out a great deal about Chacun in his next run - he either bolts up and shortens back in for the Champ chase or looks like he has regressed. It's hard to pinpoint a reason for his disappointment today, was it because he travelled over? Or was it because it was his seasonal debut against race fit horses? Either way he has massively under performed, even taking into account he always improves for a run.

            • More than just a lack of fitness to my eye today. Sure it would be a factor, but he just didn’t travel or jump like the horse you’d usually see. Usually his jumping is his biggest asset, today it let him down badly. That display not really in the same box as an underwhelming win in the grade 2 last year, or the narrow margin defeat to APT, for me

He jumped pretty averagely at Cork last year too

                12s is tempting me

Going to watch last years race back later, maybe I’ve been more inclined to view it with rose tinted glasses because he won regardless

                  • Jesus that was a shocking run from Chacun today. Race fitness had nothing to do with it. Went a really slow pace too, alot slower than novice chase.

Didn't travel, jump and was emptied once the pressure came on again. Get him off the bridle and into a battle and he has no interest. Paddock judges on TV said he looked fit. That run was miles worse than either of his reappearance runs over the last 2 years.

If they don't find an issue such as dirty scope after race, burst blood vessel or lameness then he has no point getting on a boat again.

If there is soft/heavy in the going description come march Nube Negra might as well stay at home too.

Shiskin has an issue now and will he get a prep run in before the Champion Chase? Will he need one?

If Energumene blows up tomorrow the whole thing is wide open again.

We are back to PTKO or Allaho on soft/heavy imo. Both nice prices

                    • Patrick did say they were 2 weeks behind

                      And elimay was similarly bad

Wouldnt be surprised if a couple of Willie's big guns get turned over tomorrow too on this evidence

                      • If I was Henry, I'd be aiming PTKO back here looking at the queries over some of his potential opponents.

                        • I was very close to a decent bet on Chacun today but was never happy with the price. So dodged a bullet.
I'm not sure anything has changed really.
I've defended Chacun several times as I think his runs outside of the Queen Mother merited that.
But I've not been a backer as the younger horses look very promising.

I suppose the only thing that happened today was Greaneteen looks to have put himself in as more of a player.

I think it's an exciting division alright as there are cases to be made for a few of them and I suspect we may not see much of Shishkin. It's already looking like a one run before the festival option for him. In the Game Spirit probably. Hopefully not and Henderson was being overly dramatic and trying to make a point with the scope worry yesterday.

Shishkin's price will depend a lot on how Energumene progresses as I expect he'll be seen more than once.

                          • The winner is rated 14lb better than Hitman and Captain Guinness pre-race, and beat them 5L.

Theres no improvement required to beat them by that distance.

So the race for me, has produced no 170+ horse, and no Champion-elect, on todays performances.

I couldn’t back any of them on what they did there, and their current prices for the Queen Mum.

                            • Chacun is 10 soon so has to be in the decline stage and his two trips away from home have not been successful. Look elsewhere IMO. Allaho takes one step closer to the Champion Chase today .

                              • I"n the aftermath of announcing that Altior has been retired, I thought it might be in everyone's interest to know that Shishkin has recently undergone wind surgery," Henderson told Unibet.

"After a routine scope, we were just concerned that it might, and I emphasise the word might, pose an issue later in the year so rather than take time out at a crucial stage, we decided it would be prudent to act now rather than be forced to do it mid-season if it happened to be necessary."

How on earth did I miss this in September, its what i get for being in flat mode i guess

them giving him a wind op then it not clearly not working is surely a massive red flag

Id have taken the 5s on energumene a while ago had i read that before
