  • Would not say Energumeme would not stay, just expect Shiskin to stay better and we know he adores the track.

    • Superb stuff. Got the old heart pumping! Think Townend got that ride pretty much perfect, injected spells of speed at the right time, looked great at every fence, kicked at the right time….. AND STILL IT WASNT ENOUGH.

Can't see how it is reversed at Chelts which will suit Shiskin more. But... racing.

I agree with this and i suspect he might have had an easier race than shiskin in that he appeared to do everything easily and within himself.

What a great spectacle. It was as good a race as I've seen for ages. I think if you took Shiskin out of todays race, people wouldn't be having any concerns about energumene getting up the hill as he'd have romped home from First Flow. Its just Shiskin has that extra gear and if hes close enough to energumene at the last you'd expect him to go past.

        • Magnificent race to watch
          handicappers will be pleased
will be close again at Cheltenham
the hill talk is understandable but probably a little naive
energumene may need a team mates help next time and maybe force one more or a worse mistake
cos shishkin is just that bit better.
          but it’s close.

              • Incredible race, one of the all time greats. Certainly delivered on the hype and then some! Can’t wait to see the rematch in person!

I’m not his biggest fan but think Nico deserve credit for his part in the win.

I must have looked a bit of an idiot sat in the middle of Aldi car park screaming my head off!

A relay at the front between him and chacun could easily happen if he gets there

They will be looking to use aggressive tactics on him as that's what he's done in his best runs

                  • I’ve just got back from Ascot. Absolutely buzzing after that - it was the most extraordinary race and one that I will remember for the rest of my life. Shishkin looked uncomfortable at times with the pace, pecked at one, made a mistake at another, and was a couple of lengths down needing to be rousted by Nico, but still managed to win. Energumene is some horse - Townend got his tactics spot on and nearly won.

Not to be forgotten is a thank you to the two trainers - they could easily have ducked this, but matched up for an epic. I’m still breathless!

Townend had the more straight forward ride but had to judge the pace.
nico did really well to keep calm although I think the horse helped him a lot.
coming wide also helped so if that was by design he needs credit
I kind of saw the race going exactly as it played out but was willing to back Energumene to hold on.

Think Shiskin peaked at around 9 in running

                            181p Shishkin

Glad they went 180s. Deserved it.

Won't get up the hill - one of the stupidest comments I've seen on here. Look at Energumene's race history. Just because Shishkin overtook him near the line today doesn't mean Energumene was stopping today.
