The most disappointing part of this is it’s not even surprising.
Ever since Mullins mentioned the Tingle Creek, Henderson has been worrying. Even Nube Negra had Nicky in a twist since the Schloer Chase.
Anyone (only a few in the media it seems) pretending that this isn't because of Mullins is deluded in all honesty.
For a horse to have "nothing wrong"
"Scope fine"
"Not injured"
And not turn up. For a race in 10 days time. A horse who they have also said doesn't always show the most at home.
This is where Cheltenham ruins the national hunt season for me
Iv always agreed with Nicholls that its not all about Cheltenham
Training a horse like shiskin purely based around one race in March does the horse, owners and racing fans a disservice
Obviously it's by miles the best 4 days racing but it does have that negative aspect too
Not fault of having Cheltenham….this is Nicky
A Plus Tard has a bigger target….the biggest….and still travelled over for one of top G1s, then goes for sand in Ireland before GC
This is about the approach of one particular trainer - and if he was honest and just said this was his approach, I would disagree, but least respect it more
Absolute bottle job.
Just don't want the dream to die so soon. Scaredy cat.
If I was Willie I'd follow the twat round.
Enter them at Kempton at Christmas and the clarence house. Then the game spirit.
Especially if one comes over for the tingle creek and wins.
Keep entering them and saying you intend to run.
Obviously if he's not right he's not right, but we;ve been here before and he's just being an old fool with the yips.
I remember when Altior was about to meet Cyrname.
Discussions on here were very diverse.
But fortunately I was on the side of Cyrname and he had a good day.
One of the reasons I was against Altior at the prices was the horses he had been beating in his undefeated chase run.
I think Kevin Blake came up with the same sort of stats about him rarely meeting anything with a decent rating.
If I remember rightly Cyrname demolished loads of 160+ horses at Ascot the season before they met in a performance that looked to good to be true, and this amounted to more 160+ horses than Altior had met in a couple of seasons or something daft like that (outside of his champion chase efforts)
In addition to this, the horses Altior did beat, that had higher ratings, generally only got their best rating in defeat to him, as he was rated 170 after the arkle.
His rating only went up to 175 after winning his first champion chase and he never improved on this in his next 9 runs.
This tells me a few things.
The standard of 2 mile chasers was not great.
We probably never got to see Altior reach his full potential.
Nicky created a "legend" with careful placing.
He was often not ridden to bring out his full potential.
The difference with Shishkin is that the standard of 2 mile chasers at this stage seems to be far superior to when Altior was at a similar stage.
It's easy to forget, but Altior did not run in the tingle creek after his novice season and only reappeared in February in a 3 runner Game Spirit against Politologue (165) and Valdez (151)
He ran once in the tingle creek the season after and beat Un de Sceaux (168), St Calvados (158) & Sceaux royal (159).
Outside of the Champion Chase's where he met Min who was rated 170ish (but he had his number) & Douvan after injury. He didn't really meet anything in the 160's and went off massive odds on regularly against high 150+ horses.
So the precedent is there, that Nicky is doing a decent job of prolonging reputations (his and his "superstar" horses), but it is a bit of an illusion for those that can see past it.
His issue this season is those ratings of the horses in this division.
Which I think explains this withdrawal.
I also think Shishkin is not a good price and will need to be better than Altior by a few pounds, or get really lucky with his opposition falling away for whatever reasons.

As a fully paid up member of the Altior fan club I take exception to the ‘Henderson careful planning creating
a legend’ accusation.
Supreme, Arkle, Champion Chase x 2, the four premier races in the season for a horse at his stage of career.
And it seems laughable given todays events that Henderson could plan anything let alone carefully…

Plus that Supreme was one of the best quality we have seen, I think from memory the 1st 6 all won at some stage after that race, unfortunately I was there wating on Min
One of the Reasons Altior never hit monster numbers was his style of winning was late surge so was governed by what he was beating. He might never of needed to be better than low 160’s regular but that’s not to say he couldn’t of pulled out more if the calibre of opposition was better. He’s a legend end of

Correct
He was a monster, nothing powered away in the final furlong like he did
He had an extra gear the likes of min, un de sceaux etc just didn't have
So catching up on the day's news as I've only just finished working, and I can't believe I backed the Shishkin TC/CC double without taking out HBI (Hendo Bullshit Insurance)

Yeh I'm annoyed for including Shishkin in a few roll ups. Lesson learnt, wont do ever again
