His best performance by an absolute mile was at the festival, he was fairly hit and miss prior to that so I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt until March regardless of how he runs prior, albeit a 26 length victory is not to be sniffed at despite his nearest rival suffering a fatal fall .

As for which race Vanillier ends up in, of course, is anyones guess right now, but I'd be a little disappointed if the Albert Bartlett winner were not to take part in the BANC.
    My thoughts entirely.

Even if he was to get beaten by the likes of GDC etc.. on route - I could still see him taking his chance at 3m, rather than 3m6f.
(Unless he was hammered out of sight!)

Of the two profiles that tend to win the Albert Bartlett - he was a more lightly raced/classy winner, rather than an experienced slogger.
The latter profile would generally be a good fit for the NHC, but IMO Vanillier should line up in the (ex) RSA.

Similar argument to PTKO last season.
Arkle winner should aim at the CC, not the Mares Chase (for example)

    • Would also be pretty disappointed if Vanillier didn't line up here. A feature of his running, even in defeat, has always been that he finishes really strongly. An indicator of a strong stayer & I don't doubt he would get the trip for the NHC but he seems an assured jumper so far, able to run at championship pace and would like to see if he could replicate here what he did in the AB as it was so impressive.

        • Hurdles/New Course to fences/Old Course? A bit of a stretch to call it course form.

          • Yes, missed that entirely - thanks Archie

            • Of course, it's not a negative and he's shown that he can cross the water and run to form at the Festival.

On that front, part of me wonders if last season's Festival form will be as reliable as some because of the lack of crowds and atmosphere. No way of knowing, unfortunately, but might be worth bearing in mind for the more excitable types.

Very good point especially with Aintree and Punchestown cancelled the previous year. Form could be all over the place. Add the current weather issue in there and you have a time bomb. Happy Daze

I personally feel like I'll still value last seasons festival form because winning on the track means more to me than the bravado around it. The majority had handled travelling from Ireland and racing in competitive races prior....so I won't over compensate for it.

                  • …..would that performance by Bob O entirely rule out a tilt at this? 20-1 available with PP seems big when the likes of Hills cut him to 6-1.

Its an absolute no brainer to have that in the book if cashout is available to you for now.. It will most likely needed to be cashed out before the PP cashout cut off but it's a bet to nothing at the moment.

Agree. Has to go in the book especially with cash out available. Crazy price.

Does anyone know if there’s a William Hill account out there that’s had a substantial transaction made today around 12.10pm for the Festival Novices Chase, and with the account holder’s name on the card a ‘Mr H De Bromhead’……??

Changed his tune since the days when he was a regular winner of grade 1's at the festival.

These days his opinion of the festival is like the manager of a mid division premier league team saying that

"the Champions League isn't everything, there is the Europa conference League !"
