Agreed Lobos the DRF race on Sunday is about 2F further than the Turners Chase and about 2F shorter than the RSA Chase

Its not strictly a midtrip test, the distance has been set to give a midway point between those two Festival novice chases.

Its roughly in the middle of the two races trips.

So if he blasts through the line after moving away 2F out, it aint no Turners performance

So unless my maths is wrong the DRF trip is 1 furlong and 93 yards further than the turners and 3 furlongs and 19 yards shorter than the BANC..but school was a very long time ago so someone should check my maths

      • I dont know if anyone has listened to the Horses Mouth podcast where Ruby talks about this at length, then says "I haven't spoken to Willie about Galopin des Champ". Feels a bit like air being filled

I love listening to Ruby, but you have to be careful taking his word on Willie's yard as gospel - I recall all too well him saying BDD and Appreciate It were "doing great" on Road to Cheltenham shortly before their bad news

And that Honeysuckle would run in last season's Mares Hurdle. He's as bad a judge as any of us.

People have to remember that pundits talking about obvious targets week in week out doesn't attract as many viewers as offering controversial opinions that often have little founding

Thought that watching some preview shows last year. Everyone would say "well you have to try and get Appreciate It beaten" to the point it actually would've been brave to say "I think the odds on fav will win"

                  • Galopin Des Champs is still plenty strong enough on Betfair so maybe it is all just smoke and mirrors...

                    • I'm going to back both. But I don't know if Dusart prefers this or the other race. Not sure what Henderson will prefer if wins well today.

Looks to me like this race is the one for Dusart.
He’s got some engine and would have won that by a lot more if he jumped straight!!
Still at least Cheltenham is left handed, don’t think we will see him right handed again somehow!!
He jumps them fine, but obviously be better without the left part, and seems to be better the quicker he goes and will have more company in this race than yesterday.

                        • Dusart....

"He’s doing his job well," admitted Henderson. "Whether he’s quite ready for that [Cheltenham] I don’t know, but we will find out when we run him again.
"I’d like to get another run into him and see what happens and then we’ll decide what we’re going to do. I think it’s definitely going to be left-handed otherwise he'll be in the car park.”

                          • Not from Mullins or anything, but for any of you out there, who, like me, are seeking comfort in any quote/indication that Galopin is heading here, this is in the Mark Howard February update.

GALOPIN DES CHAMPS: Progressive over hurdles last spring, the ex-French gelding made an explosive beginning to his chasing career at Leopardstown over Christmas. Lining up in a two miles five beginners chase – subsequent Gold Cup winner Lord Windermere won the race in 2012 and Gold Cup runner-up Djakadam was successful the following year – Willie Mullins’ charge destroyed seven rivals by upwards of 22 lengths with an awesome display of jumping and galloping.

Paul Townend’s mount was in front after the first fence and his performance was as good as it gets as far as a first time out novice chaser is concerned. Even when the runner-up Ain’t That A Shame attempted to close after the second last, the winner pulled away again without Townend moving a muscle and he crossed the line full of running (third has won since).

The Grade 1 Ladbrokes Novice Chase over the same C&D on Sunday (1.20) is expected to be his next target before returning to three miles in the Grade 1 Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase at Cheltenham (16th March). The unbeaten Bravemansgame will provide a much sterner test in the latter contest at the Festival and it could be argued Paul Nicholls’ dual Grade 1 winner possesses more speed but it will take an exceptional novice to beat this Timos gelding. The fact he is already as short as 5/1 (Unibet) for the 2023 Cheltenham Gold Cup speaks for itself.

                            • Interesting thanks - how likely is he to be ‘in the know’? Or is it just an interesting write up.

                              • Whilst Willie prob has an initial idea in mind, i think we all know that this is a decision he won't make until the last minute

Moreover, all he has run in is a beginners chase over a mid-range trip......so it is impossible to know until after Sunday....and so many variables in how the race could play out and what route it suggests

Also, were something to happen to one of the other key horses..... Bob (please not!), Brave, etc....it will influence final decision

But for anyone sat on a strong position which depends on GDS going to the Browns, then depending on your own preferred punting style,i would def look at cover in some way....so least can relax bit more and enjoy what should be an awesome race
