  • Yep, my thoughts too Saxon. Hoping maybe GDM goes RSA but the Stayers is obviously a tempting alternative. I don't see him going NHC so I suppose the only other option would be for him to bypass Cheltenham altogether. Can't wait for Stable Tour/those entries and to see how it pans out.

Wouldn’t look good to the owner to get pasted twice at the same trip by the same horse.
Hes already won a 2M6F Grade 1 Hurdle at the DRF on soft /heavy ground.

The winner of that race the year before was Latest Exhibition and he went 3M and some, novice chasing, as did the three behind him.

I think it’s highly likely that if GDM goes novice chasing he won’t take on Bob Olinger in the Marsh (if Bob continues to be top class in his new discipline).

With Ferny Hollow, Appreciate It and Blue Lord in his stable, among others, I think Willie looks to have the Arkle and Marsh pretty well covered without GDM.
Particularly as Hendo doesn’t have the quality of Shishkin and Chantry House to bag both of those prizes this season.
Hope this wouldn’t mean they slip GDC in the Marsh…. he’s proven he has the pace?

      • Gaillard Du Mesnil doesn't look overly big to me., and he looked a light-framed sort from what I saw of him last season. Given the novice chase riches Willie has there has to be a good chance he stays over hurdles for the Stayers. As has already been said though, the James de Berlais news may cause a re-think if he's schooled well enough over fences.

On the chase debut over three miles and French bred stats, which are very strong standing up for 20 years and 15 years respectively, you can guarantee the trainer that will break them is Willie. He's the trainer that has broken pretty much every strong stat over the years. I use stats for all my work, but never exclude a Willie horse because of them.

The original interview with Pierre Boulard at the Arqana sales said he’d be a chaser in the future. That could change of course but I don’t think his size will hold him back; he’s maybe more compact but I wouldn’t hold that against him. There was also a comment about fences helping him settle so that’s something to consider. Lastly, Saint Des Saints progeny absolutely love their jumping so I’d still hope he’d improve for the larger obstacles.

No way, he is definitely a 3M horse

"We're dead keen they get the rain and if it arrives and the ground is safe, it'll be a nice opportunity for him," the trainer said. "Three miles is good for him and it's a fair track, but it would have to be soft ground so we'll have to see tomorrow.
"The tension is there because we've got an extremely good horse, but we're aware it's his first time novice chasing and a safe round of jumping and a bit of education is what we want.

"He hasn't had many races for a horse running at his level and I was worried about schooling him as he's so precious, but he jumps with his ears pricked like he's made for it."

              • I'm not too far from Wetherby, been windy again all day but in the last half hour and counting it's started pissing it down proper. Hopefully they get the ground they need. Kind regards, Carol.

that went well. It dragged anyway.
always think it’s best not to get too precious
must be difficult mind. But the signals are worrisome.
looking forward to seeing how waiting patiently does this season now he’s with different handlers.

Just picked up in this and requested a couple of prices, the racing post has it listed as star quality, should get 50/1 atleast I think. Goes well on good to soft, stuffed Vanillier last year by 10 lengths on yielding ground. definitely dark horse

Interesting, thanks for the info. For me he could easily end up being one of those not quite up to scratch who ends up dropping into the NHC. 66/1 with 365 is tempting. Will be looking for the BANC price too though.

                          • Looking forward to seeing Vaniller run today and I think 3/1 is generous, personally I think he will win. He was my first bet for this after winning the Albert Bartlett and I personally think he's going to be a better chaser. Time will tell...

Its a pretty competitive race over a trip too short for him

If they go slow he may not be quick enough
