  • Is anyone else completely 'meh' about this race now?

With EIR disappointing and even Sharjah not setting the world alight, I just can't see anything in the betting.

I'm sorry but I'm not backing Honeysuckle at 7/4 at this point. Doesn't appeal to me at all.

I want honey to get beat pre Fez just to liven this race up.

I'm happy to the lay the race for now but erugh, it crap ain't it.

Possibly not for Honey backers. Watching all the young pretenders get beat by the old timers is very heart warming

Yeh it's a pretty uninspiring market. I'm using Honey at 7/4 in doubles with even money shots I really fancy to try and built roll ups at around 5/1.

        • I think sometimes we need to take our punter hats off and just embrace the superstars like Honeysuckle. They really don't come around that often but when they do it's good just to sit back and enjoy them as opposed to trying to get them beat or find one to beat them. They'll be gone again in a flash otherwise.

          • After the weekends racing I think 7/4 quite fair for Honeysuckle. Particularly when you think her price is slightly bigger than Shishkin's who's got at least 2 genuine challengers at this stage.

A much better price taking into account at this stage Shishkin has only beaten Novices as well. He's got it all to prove. Probably will but maybe not. Honey has been there and done it and has the T shirt with bells on. She's looking more like a 2/5 chance if she gets there safely and in similar form to this year so even 7/4 4 months out could look very generous on the day. All talk though at this stage. Lots of water to flow under that precarious bridge.

              • I actually think Honeysuckle will get beat in the hattons grace, last year she just clung on from Ronald pump and I think something could pass her this time round as she won't be fully wound up and while that's probably still good enough to win I'm hoping for at least one bookie to overreact and push her out a decent amount, at which point it's time to go in again in my opinion. She's still levels above everything else and will be in top form come March if she makes it there healthy fingers crossed. Like everyone else I'll be watching closely but with the expectation she gets beat. Obviously she should just bolt up but I'm in no rush to take the 7/4 at this stage, have her in lots of multis so if she shortens after winning the hattons then I'll simply sit back and enjoy the show.

                  I agree.
Very interesting how Henry reacts to Mullins entries, as I think Willie (if they are ready to run) will run pretty decent animals in this. Klassical Dream & Saldier, and if Stormy Ireland doesn't run at ascot at the weekend and front runs/sets a hood pace in this, then Willie is definitely serious in denting her armour a bit.

Do they want to protect the unbeaten tag ?
Or would they rather that monkey left ?

                  • If she's going to get beat it'll be in the HG. Can see her winning though much the same as last year . Just doing enough with plenty to work on. I doubt her price will budge much.

                    • This is Sharjah's year!!

But seriously surely he's an ew bet at 14s? Got pretty close to Honeysuckle and Punchestown, I know Henry's were running bad at the time, and I thought he was impressive yesterday. You never know...

He has a hell of a chance of placing again but the prices probably should have been taken before yesterday.

I've said all along that no gelding will be able to give 7lbs and a beating to Honeysuckle given she is in the same form as this year. Of the Mares, EIR was very disappointing yesterday, Concertista is going chasing apparently so that leaves Epatante who will need to prove she's back to her best and possibly Shewearsitwell who could be diverted here should she come out and look the part following her spell on the injury list.
Looking at it that way there's only one result again.

                        • It's all logical but you only have to look back to last year. Epatante was cut to 2/1 from 3/1 after the Fighting Fifth and seemed likely to go off odds on in March. A lot can happen/go wrong in 4 months.

That's the same for a 7/4 shot as it is a 33/1 shot. If you placed a tenner on each then you'd still lose the same amount if neither of them got there. Clearly the 7/4 shot would have a much better chance of making you a profit if both got there in decent form.

90% my strategy. Rarely back anything in singles less than 10's +. I do however make an exception for one or two every season and clearly Honey is one of those. I owe her more than she owes me so I'm happy to take the risk with that little sweetie.
