  • Willie isn't afraid to run his horses against each other so I could definitely see them taking each other on

He simply has too many good horses to not run plenty of them against each other especially now hes behind due to the rain

Appreciate it surely runs at the DRF, and if ferny wins the grade 1 at Xmas where else can he go as a prep without carrying a big penalty?

The markets suggest that is the pecking order at this stage. All could change of course but I feel GDM will be the one used to fill a void if anything happens to the 3 alphas I stated.

      • I decided to do related doubles for both Ferny and Appreciate It in both the Marsh and Arkle and move on with my life. No chance he runs both against each other at the Festival IMO and you could spend months guessing who goes where with the man in charge of both.

In pretty much every race, except the Arkle it seems, never really understood why, but for whatever reason it seems to have been the case. Given the number of horses he has you'd think one season he will eventually end up with more than one in the Arkle, maybe this season?

A very good point COD. This has been highlighted before as a stand out stat and adds weight to Mullins horses being split.

Someone pointed out to me recently that had it not been for Energumene's last minute injury, he and Franco de Port would've both run in last seasons renewal.

              • In the last 10 years Mullins has sent just one horse to the Arkle in each year. Here endeth the 'will he split them' debate. Phew !

I meant as in running at the DRF to see who is best

It is an EBF race so may not be qualified. Also it is on the Inner Circuit at Fairyhouse which could be a factor

                          • If Bob Olinger is as good a hurdler as he is a chaser, assuming he’s heading into the marsh unbeaten fav and I owned last years supreme winner, no way would I wear anybody telling me my horse was going to go and take Bob on in the marsh.

Wasn't a guarantee though. Something always seems to 'happen' to one of the others when it comes to the Arkle. Duc Des Genievres was an able deputy (in the shi**est Arkle....EVER), for Cilaos Emery, but no guarantee both would have run prior to this.

He ran 4 in the Marsh in 2020, yes, FOUR, one of them was Melon, who ended up running a blinder, but was a placed G1 2miler at the festival on multiple occasions. Instead he left it up to Cash Back as his only Arkle horse. Whilst the gamble nearly paid off he still left the Arkle with just the one runner when he had a G1 2 mile horse in the Marsh, and you could argue, given Melons consistent record at the festival itself that he likely would have gone closer than Cash Back to winning the Arkle that year.

It makes little sense to me, but it does seem to be how he operates when it comes to this race.
