  • What do we think of Mount Ida for the Mares Chase?

I re-watched the Kim Muir yesterday as have been toying with the idea of backing her for the Mares Chase. Having watched the race back, she was quite outpaced and didn't look like she wanted to drop in trip at all. That said, earlier in the season she showed enough pace to win a G3 over 2 miles.

She jumped to the right a fair bit in the Kim Muir and Jack Kennedy said post race he thought about pulling her up and that the mare wasnt used to such a large field sizes. BUT she stuck in there and won comfortably in the end.

She is rated now 152 which puts her bang in there with the best mares (only 3lb behind 4/1 fav Elimay) and obviously makes handicaps more difficult.

On the face of it 12/1 doesnt seem the most generous but I am really struggling to find many viable alternatives and she could easily end up being at least half the price. She wasnt beaten that far by Elimay at Fairyhouse and was closing at the the line. Cheltenham's stiff finish will suit her better IMHO. I am going to add her for a couple of points with cashout.

    • Can't have Mount Ida at all over 2 1/2 . She'll lack the pace to compete with the best and will only be playing for minor places should she go for the Mares Chase.

      • Magic Daze entered yet again. This time at Killarney. Riviera D'etel in the same race

Fingers crossed they get some rain in County Kerry between now and Sunday.

I'd tend to agree i find it hard for her not finding one too sharp for her. Though shes only 7 and there's certainly room for her to sharpen up her jumping so it's possible but as 12/1 i'd be a non-backer.

Interesting to see the campaign for her this year given she stays so well. Possibly Gordie could aim her back over hurdles in Ireland off 134 over a staying trip.

There's been plenty in County Cork the last few days!! I'm sure our lovely neighbours are getting some of that as well.

Aforementioned won that last season as a second season novice. Ontheropes rated a stone better than that one was at the time, and is probably two stones better!

Mullins two winners of the NH Chase both went to the novice chases at Listowel and Limerick. Ontheropes was entered in the Kerry National and now in the Munster National at the same meetings. Given we know Willie won't be aiming Ontheropes at a Chaltenham handicap I take this as a good sign he'll be going to the NH Chase with lots of battle-hardened experience.

It does seem all very positive for the 4 miler.

Off 152? While it seems the perfect race, she'd be some mare to be winning off that. Maybe she can or they'll use a claimer.

Latest Exhibition couldn't off 153. Our Duke a different level off 153, but we know he was a g1 horse, is she!?

Didn't realize she was that high. Wow. Never worth that mark .

I know your approach is to make a book Spectre, and so is mine to an extent although I am much more select with my picks, but are you a backer as of now, or going to wait and see? I’d backed him last season and was well happy with his credentials for the race, and the monkfish angle is pretty exciting for all it was only a beginners chase, but after a full year off that was obviously due to some sort of issue I’m not sure I’m a backer at 25/1 with no cashout before I’ve seen him confirmed fit & well. That said, if he comes out & wins, or even goes close, should he run in the Munster national then he’s probably half that, as I think most are now wise to the nh Chase angle with him after last season. Could be one for the ‘win today and…’ markets for me
