  • I had a look back and couldn't really see many if any horses that had gone AB after coming top 5 in the champion bumper the previous year. The last one was Thyme Hill, and of Mullins's many many many top 5 horses in the race I could only see Briar Hill that had gone the AB after that, which was a fair few years ago now. He has aimed them mostly at the Supreme and Ballymore over recent years.

It could be different this year however as I do think that this is his strongest ever bunch of novice hurdlers he has ever had and I wouldn't be surprised if he won all 4 novice hurdle races and the MP with a novice

      • No Triumph thread set up yet so I’ll put it here.

An impressive hurdles debut from Impulsive One in a juvenile hurdle today for Hendo and the double green team of Munir and Souede (normally a good combination in the division). Probably won’t be the best in the division, but probably the best performance so far in Britain to me in the juvenile division. (Won by 12 lengths beating a couple of previous winners). Not priced up for the triumph yet

          • I know it’s Hendo and he would say any superlative about his horses, but he’s said at the open day today that Jonbon jumps brilliantly

He tends to know early enough, when he gets one that goes on to be top class.

              • I Am Maximus looking in fine fettle. Interestingly i've noticed from most comments on twitter recently that people on there are talking about him in Ballymore terms and as a stayer, but on here he's mostly been talked of for the Supreme. Who do we reckon will be right, if either?! To my very much untrained eye he didn't appear to be screaming out for further in his bumper, but that was some time ago now! And I still feel Henderson is more likely to chuck a couple of good ones into the Supreme than elsewhere.

Looking at the trends, I think it all just points to the supreme to be honest considering he throws a lot of good ones at it every year, excluding this year

I'd be very surprised if he went to Cheltenham and ran in anything other than the Supreme.

                      • Britain's best novice hurdler last term was the Dan Skelton-trained My Drogo, second in a Cheltenham bumper 13 months ago to I Am Maximus, who has not run since.

"He could be anything, and he and Jonbon are the standouts," purred Henderson.

"His form, beating My Drogo, looks spectacular. We gave him a break afterwards and I never got him back, but I'm not a great fan of the Cheltenham Bumper and he wasn't one for Aintree so didn't run again.

"He looks superb and has got all the speed in the world.

Last year I was confident about the novice chasers and now it's the novice hurdlers," said the leader of Lambourn's highest-profile yard.

"I think this will be an exciting division for us and then next year I hope I'm talking about novice chasers again because the Jonbons and I Am Maximuses will be going over fences; they're the horses who keep you going."

There is certainly a glint in Henderson's eye when talking about Newbury bumper victor Jonbon, a brother to eight-time Grade 1 winner Douvan who cost a whopping ?570,000 after landing his point-to-point.

"I've never been so frightened when I took him to Newbury because you know what everyone would have been like if he'd been beaten, but I hadn't done much with him and he definitely wasn't wound up for it," he continued.

"It took us months to find a box he was happy in – he moved six times and is a fidget of a horse - but he came back looking magnificent.

"We're very lucky to have him and he's bred to be good, looks good and everything he's done in one point-to-point and bumper has been very good. There's a long way to go, but he's got that pace and I can't believe we'll start over further than two miles."

Warming to that theme, Henderson reels off a host of youngsters who put the spring into his step each morning.

"Nico [de Boinville] is mad about Firestep and his sister arrived this week after we bought her on the grounds that we think Firestep is going to be the bee's knees, in which case you need his little sister in your pocket – and she's for sale," he said.
