  • 6th/7th/8th - The perfect results for your ante post positions are........

With a massive weekend of action at Leopardstown, plus Sandown and Wetherby, and Fairyhouse on Monday, what does the ideal weekend look like for your ante post Cheltenham positions? (not what you are backing this weekend, just in terms of influencing ante post bets)
    • Who do you want to win?
    • Who do you think will win?
    • Which races are key to your book, and why?
    • Who do you want to see disappoint?
    • What prices are you buzzing about?
    • What do you want trainers to say post-race re targets?
I have done the following races (in case people want to just copy and paste)

Saturday - Nathaniel Lacy & Partners Novice Hurdle (Grade 1)
Saturday - Ladbrokes Dublin Chase (Grade 1)
Saturday - Arkle Novice Chase (Grade 1)
Saturday - Irish Champion Hurdle (Grade 1)
Saturday - Cleeve Hurdle (Grade 2)
Saturday - Towton Novices' Chase (Grade 2)
Saturday - Scilly Isles Novices' Chase (Grade 1)

Sunday - Spring Juvenile Hurdle (Grade 1)

Sunday - Pharma Novice Hurdle (Grade 1)
Sunday - Flogas Novice Chase (Grade 1)
Sunday - Irish Gold Cup (Chase) (Grade 1)

Monday - Solerina Mares Novice Hurdle (Grade 3)

    SATURDAY 6TH

Leopardstown - Nathaniel Lacy & Partners Novice Hurdle (Grade 1)

BO (16/1) and BMG (6/1) are decent Ballymore winners for me so I don't really want to see Gaillard Du Mesnil win like a lot of people think he will. I have just added Ashdale Bob for the AB, so I'd like to see him win the race, and for Fakeira to run with credit.

Leopardstown - Ladbrokes Dublin Chase (Grade 1)
I'd love to see Min beat CPS, but I think the best I can hope for is Min pushing CPS close. I want a QMCC market shake up and I have Min at 55's for the QMCC, so I'd love a dirty shake up and definitely for the HDB to confirm PTKO to go QMCC off the back of something disappointing.

Leopardstown - Arkle Novice Chase (Grade 1)
Energumene is in quite a few doubles @ 16/1 for the Arkle, so I'd like to see him run well, but Unexpected @ 22/1 EW would be a great result for me too. Energumene to win and Unexcepted a very close second would be ideal. I'd like targets clearly defined post race but its Willie so that simply wont happen, but hopefully definitive performances do the confirming for me.

Leopardstown - Irish Champion Hurdle (Grade 1)
Maybe not a popular view, but I want to see Honeysuckle beat, and I want Saldier to do the beating. Saldier is my biggest CH winner so that's my favoured result, but I also have Saint Roi at 20/1 so were he to win I'd be happy with that. Covered Honey @ 20/1 to win both ICH & CH so if she does it no harm no foul, I just hope she doesn't.

Wetherby - Cleeve Hurdle (Grade 2)
I was gutted Itchy Feet didn't get a chance to take on PP at Cheltenham last week as I have him @ 245's for the stayers. I'd love him to piss up and for Olly Murphy to declare the stayers his target. I'd love an impressive win.

Wetherby - Towton Novices' Chase (Grade 2)
I have TBB @ 33/1 for the RSA and its a bet I have all but put a line through. To enter the frame as a real player in the RSA he needs to jump well and win this really convincingly, anything less and I'll add him to my dead bets column.

Sandown - Scilly Isles Novices' Chase (Grade 1)
Really important race for my ante post positions. I want Shan Blue in the Marsh as he's in the book @ 16/1 EW so if he wins I'll be happy. Have DDC @ 20/1 in quite a few bets so the perfect outcome is she wins, and Hendo says the Mares Chase is the aim. I'd love DDC and Shan Blue to battle it out, little lost in defeat on either side.

    SUNDAY 7TH

Leopardstown - Spring Juvenile Hurdle (Grade 1)
I want French Aseel to be declared, but I am sceptical. If he shows up I want him to put Quilixios in his place. I have him at 7/1 so would like to see him live up to his reputation and really shake up the market. Please show up FA and please be a weapon! If he doesn't show up then I hope an outside wins to shake up the market.

Leopardstown - Pharma Novice Hurdle (Grade 1)
Appreciate It will probably win, but I'd love to see Ballyadam run with credit as he's in the book at 87/1. Do I see it happening? No. Appreciate It will probably win, but that's my ideal result, Ballyadam running him a lot closer and at least booking his place in March. I'd like to see N'golo run well.

Leopardstown - Flogas Novice Chase (Grade 1)
I want a market shake up here and I want to see Monkfish beaten. He is a very good horse, a deserved favourite and I think he'll win, but I'd love his 'bombproofness' to be blown apart. I'd love to see Asterion Forlonge stay on his feet. If he does I think he could give Monkfish a race. He's in the book @ 20/1 EW for the Marsh so for that bet to ever live, he has to be declared, stay on his feet, and go close.

Leopardstown - Irish Gold Cup (Chase) (Grade 1)
I want Melon in the Ryanair so tailed off please. I want Kemboy back over hurdles for the stayers so disappoint please. Delta Work is the value IMO, but I like Minella Indo and hope it runs well for HDB.

(I'd love Uniketat to piss up at PAU and get bought by JP but I wont get greedy)

    MONDAY 8TH

Fairyhouse - Solerina Mares Novice Hurdle (Grade 3)
I have just added Royal Kahala @ 7/1 and I've be vocal about opposing Gauloise, so I want to see RK win and I think shell put Gauloise in her place.

Good luck this weekend everyone. Hopefully we can all look back next week suitably smug and not utterly horrified. We all know from our diaries who has backed what, but I thought a thread like this would be interesting as we can all see everything in the same place.

So you want every favourite turned over near enough basically. GLGLGL

decisive honey win and go champion will be all I’m actually wanting - the rest will be about coming out unscathed

Saturday - Nathaniel Lacy & Partners Novice Hurdle (Grade 1)
Gallaird Du Mesnil to beat Cape Gentleman with the pair sprinting clear of the rear after the last. There 2 I've got covered for the Ballymore, and haven't backed any of the other for anything apart from Atattler being on a couple of place request a bets.

Saturday - Ladbrokes Dublin Chase (Grade 1)
Same as last year will do me Chacun pulling away from
Min could do with Fakir showing a lot more as backed him a while ago for the Ryanair.

Saturday - Arkle Novice Chase (Grade 1)
Could do with Captain Guinness reversing form with Energumene, and Felix Desjy not running like a maniac.

Saturday - Irish Champion Hurdle (Grade 1)
Abacadabras beating Saldier with Honeysuckle staying on for third.

Saturday - Cleeve Hurdle (Grade 2)
Nothing backed that's running in this.

Saturday - Towton Novices' Chase (Grade 2)
The Big Breakaway winning and jumping much better than last time.

Saturday - Scilly Isles Novices' Chase (Grade 1)
Cashed out my Shan Blue RSA bets so no runners backed for cheltenham.

Sunday - Spring Juvenile Hurdle (Grade 1)
          Quilixios winning well.

Sunday - Pharma Novice Hurdle (Grade 1)
Ballyadam getting a lot closer to AI if not beating him and Magic Tricks running a better race than last time (though I've pretty much written him off)

Sunday - Flogas Novice Chase (Grade 1)
Monkfish winning well, if Asterion Forlonge runs then him getting round and jumping straight.

Sunday - Irish Gold Cup (Chase) (Grade 1)
          Minella Indo winning.

Monday - Solerina Mares Novice Hurdle (Grade 3)
Delvino reversing form with Royal Kahala (seems unlikely)

Such a 'meh' response . I've mentioned 12 races and want the current fav to win in 25% of them. This is ultimately about ante-post positions and as much as I'd love to lay claim to backing all the current favs at big prices, I haven't, so yeh, I want some upsets

The one I really want to see win or at least be fighting it out is Saldier. Same as you haven’t hidden how much I like him and he’s also my biggest champion hurdle winner.

Hope most of the other favs win, very boring, but for my book it would be best.

Only really Appreciate It I don’t have as a single so I wouldn’t be gutted if he was beat, by Ballyadam but can’t see it myself.

Edit - forgot Monday, would love Gauloise to lay down a strong marker and clear fav for the mares
novice but it will be a very tough race.

When placing most ante post bets your main hope at that stage is that you've called the target correctly and your horses land in the races you've backed them so I'm not hung up on my horses winning head in chest and all going short for March.

I need Saldier to run well, really have over exposed myself on him (as well as Thyme Hill).
I'd written off Fakir D'oudaries heading for the Queen Mother but a Dublin chase entry gives me some hope he still has ability and at 2m.
Ashdale Bob to prove his stamina and confirm his potato race engagement.
I'd like to see Blue Lord run well on Sunday and head for the Supreme (not backed him yet) but if nothing else this race should remove some of my confusion for the Supreme and give me a clue.
Minella Indo to prove his wellbeing and go very close.

                Not asking much...

Great idea this thread Charlie, overall think we want a lot of the same stuff to happen, with a few differences here and there.

Laceys - while he’s not my best winner, I have backed GDM for the Ballymore and it would be nice to have 2 good darts against BMG (also have Bob O onboard) so seeing him win I wouldn’t mind at all, though my best result would be GDM shaping well & getting outstayed by Holymacapony who I’ve backed for the potato race; i latched on to him early and had been eagerly awaiting his debut after he was sold to Barry maloney so I’d get a bit of personal satisfaction out of him turning out to be a good one. Stattler would also be a good result for me as I’ve him covered too at a big price to the Bartlett, though only with a small stake. Out of the first 4 in the betting, any three of those winning are good for my antepost positions, this is a pretty key race for me out of all those that are on this weekend, GDM, Stattler & Holymacapony pulling miles clear of the field with holymacapony staying on strongly to win a couple of lengths would be a dream . In all seriousness, I’m in a similar position I was in with the future champions race at Christmas, and will be covering 1 or maybe 2 of the others in the ‘win today’ market, as it looks a fairly open race.

Dublin Chase - like you I’d like to see a shake-up here. I haven’t backed CPS and whilst he looks a shoe-in you’d at least like to see something run him close. The dream is notebook winning, but realistically I don’t think that will happen. Either notebook or min running CPS close would be satisfactory, I’ve min covered for the Ryanair so him proving he’s still up to scratch but just being done for a bit of speed would be good.

Arkle - Either energumene or unexcepted here are nice winners for me. Nice to see unexcepted declared and he’s definitely the bet to win on the day, I think 11/2 is a ripe each way scumbag price. Realistically, if they’re to be a credible threat to Shishkin, they’d probably want to be destroying the field by several lengths. Unexcepted my best winner but obvious energumene is more likely, but I think winning convincingly is key, if they finish in a heap then I’m not confident they’d be putting it up to Shishkin.

ICH - Think we want the same result here, Saldier beating Honeysuckle, I don’t want to see her well beat, just enough that she goes to the mares hurdle. Abacadabras would also be a decent result for me, but I think Saldier is most likely to come good.

Bumper - I’ve already backed Kilcruit, so whilst he’d be my best result, Ramillies looks big at 5/1 to me and I’ll probably play him in the ‘win today’ market to get him on-side if winning as it does look open enough. Letsbeclearaboutit funnily enough would be an okay result, as sir Gerhard has the measure of him easily, so whilst I’ve not backed him it would cement SG as an even stronger favourite. I’m not a big fan of chemical energy, and him winning would be a bad result as I’ve no intention of backing him.

Spring Juvenile - Either of French Aseel or Quilixios, Quilixios would be my best winner & think the Elliott yard probably thought he’d be their best juvenile this season at the beginning, not that that’s worth too much. Ultimately though, I’d rather see either one win well, than them be closely matched at the finish.

Deloitte - all about appreciate it here, isn’t it? Although I imagine they’ll be a few still holding Ballymore dockets praying that something does him for speed Though I have had a cover on him for the Ballymore, him beat here would put me in a fair bit of turmoil

Irish GC - Tough one for me this as I want Minella Indo to win, but I don’t want him to have to battle to do it. I was never keen on him coming here from early doors, but events over Christmas make it necessary. Hopefully, he’s the horse I hope he is and can put this field to bed without getting into the fight of his life to do so. The ease in the ground somewhat eases my concerns too.

Flogas - monkfish please, and hopefully beating LE more convincingly, or at least as convincingly as last time so they decide to take their chance in the 4 miler, as I’ve backed him there & not the RSA.

Mares bumper - brandy love would be a great win as I think she’s likely Mullins best mare in bumpers this season & have backed her at a big price for Cheltenham, although I’d be worried about the ground for her if it remains soft to heavy and I may or may not back another in the win today market depending what turns up.

as for the English stuff, I’ve no big opinion. Hopefully those near the head of the market all get beat, and there’s a big shakeup in favour of the Irish from a personal point of view, I’d like to see native river go well in the Cotswold, but I’m surprised they’ve kept him in it at sandown and I think the right handed track will be against him. BDM would do in that case.

Im hoping honeysuckle gets beaten and they make the decision to stick to the mares..i want to see energumene be the best of the irish 2 mile novice chasers but not THAT good! Id like to see appreciate it absolutely bolt up..i would like to see quilixios become the new favourite after cruising to an easy win..id like to see a big run from ramilles in the bumper and same with brandy love..would like to see shan blue win the scilly isles jumping from the front

Want Unexcepted, Captain Guinness or Darver Star to win/go close in that race to give me some cover over Shishkin even though I don't think it'll be needed. Also would like to see TBB outpaced again so they will supplement him for the NHC as I've got a lovely TWAR double on him with Monkfish and I think he'd have more chance beating Galvin. Oh, and Gauloise to smash Royal Kahala. That's it .........not much to ask !

...I took the 100-1 a/r DRF/Cheltenham offer for Holymacapony, so it would be good to see that one get back on course.

Saldier winning the ICH would also be welcome, I played the 80-1 ‘win both’ & 16-1 ‘place’ specials. I’m not one for particularly wanting one to fail, but if Honeysuckle could finish out the 1st 3, i would have her in my book for the Mares Hurdle @ 25-1.

One of my first wagers for this Festival was Fakir Doudairies for CC (also in a few multiples at 14-1 a/r). I’d given up on it going the CC route given the quotes of it needing further than 2miles, but JoB is just the type who could turn this ones fortunes around. I had a very small e/w interest in the Dublin Chase @ 33-1 last week (1st 3), and because I’m a mug 181-1 special for it to win Saturday & CC.

Beyond that, I’d mostly like Quilixios to win impressively, I took the DRF/TH special when it was 30-1 so that would nicely boost my TH interest. For a bit of interest, I’m on 18-1 for both Monkfish & Appreciate It to win at both festivals.

Clearly you’re a better tipster than mathematician....although saying that I was polite earlier by not commenting on your self-glorification of what prices you managed to get on each horse - I thought we kept that sort of stuff for the diaries section

I stand by wishing you luck with your positions this weekend - I however, am nervous for the carnage that will unfold in awful Irish conditions - so you may get your multiple favourites turned over.

As I have backed the Honeysuckle / Concertista double, and the honeysuckle to win both special - my best result will be seeing her win easily and run in the festival.

I’ve backed Appreciate It in the 5/1 double but as Sunday will probably be called off, I’m trying to not think about that anymore. Saying that I also did the Blue Lord / appreciate it double in case BL was too speedy over 2m and they pushed AI back to the ballymore.

I’m on the GDM double for small stakes but also holymacapony. The latter is one of my bigger winners of the week currently.

Latest Exhibition can very happily run in the 4 miler
for me and have monkfish in a few bets so ideally monkfish there....

Saturday - Nathaniel Lacy & Partners Novice Hurdle (Grade 1)
Tricky one to know what I want to happen here. I've got the first 6 in the betting covered for races at Cheltenham but I guess with it being over 2.6m id prefer the speedier horses (Ballymore horses) to win. So GDM to win and then the others looking like they need the AB trip. Cape Gentleman is then only other than GDM that I have in the Ballymore, but he has been stronger in the betting for the AB since I backed him, I wouldn't mind if he bombed out.
Prediction - I can see there being an upset here (but who). I'll go for Fakiera

Saturday - Ladbrokes Dublin Chase (Grade 1)
Not got CPS as a single in the QM but I have him in some multiples and have Min for the Ryanair. So hoping for a repeat of last year in this race with them 1 and 2
                              Prediction - CPS

Saturday - Arkle Novice Chase (Grade 1)
Again I have a few backed in the Arkle here, although I want Shishkin to win it. Would prefer if Energumene won and lined up in the Arkle and the rest aren't far away so they line up there as well other than Embittered who I hope comes further back to save his handicap mark for the GA. If Energumene doesnt win I could see him going the Marsh so I'll be considering a cash out after this
                              Prediction - Energumene

Saturday - Irish Champion Hurdle (Grade 1)
Ideally I want Honeysuckle to get beaten so that she goes to the MH. Then I'll have two darts in that with Concertista. I have here covered for the CH but either way there may be some quite cashing out after this has finished. Of the rest I would hope Saint Roi wins this as he's the only other one I have in the CH
                              Prediction - Honeysuckle

Saturday - Cleeve Hurdle (Grade 2)
Cheltenham wise the result doesn't affect me as I don't see any of them winning the Stayers or anything else there for that matter. If I was to side with one I think One The Blind Side is completely rejuvenated this season and this could book his ticket in the Stayers (won't win it though)
Prediction - On the Blind Side

Saturday - Towton Novices' Chase (Grade 2)
I would love The Big Breakaway to bounce back here with a win and put himself into a place contention at the festival. The only one I have backed for any race and that's the former RSA
Prediction - The Big Breakaway. Port Of Mars looks an improver though

Saturday - Scilly Isles Novices' Chase (Grade 1)
I think Shan Blue will probably win this one. The only horse I have for Cheltenham is DDC in the MC though I can't see that happening win or lose in this anymore. She wins she goes the Marsh, she loses she either goes the Marsh, doesn't go or back over hurdles.
                              Prediction - Shan Blue

Sunday - Spring Juvenile Hurdle (Grade 1)
Ideally I would want Quilixios to win here with Youmdor close up, leading to them going for the Triumph. Then for the Boodles I have Saint Sam with Busselton AR, so would like them to set marks of high 130 to low 140s to have them heading that way. I've got nothing on French Aseel so I'm hoping he completely blows up if he comes here.
                              Prediction - Quilixios

Sunday - Pharma Novice Hurdle (Grade 1)
                              Two words - Appreciate It
Otherwise I do have Ballyadam and Blue Lord (I'm glad he's in this rather than the 2.6m) hopefully they run well and go for the supreme as well
                              Prediction - Appreciate It

Sunday - Flogas Novice Chase (Grade 1)
This is all about Monkfish. Should win and hopefully he does. Only issue I have here is if Latest Exhibition doesn't win I can see him going the NHC which I haven't backed him in (I have got him covered for the RSA). So Maybe hoping he wins here and Monkfish turns it around at Cheltenham.
I would also love to see Conflated get a reasonable mark after this and go for the Stable Plate
                              Prediction - Monkfish

Sunday - Irish Gold Cup (Chase) (Grade 1)
I hope Minella Indo bolts up here and them again at Cheltenham. That would be lovely!!
Only other horse I care about here is Melon who I've backed for the Ryanair, so I hope he doesn't stay here.
                              Prediction - Minella Indo

Monday - Solerina Mares Novice Hurdle (Grade 3)
Gauloise for the win here and then on the Cheltenham. I have Royal Kahala covered but NRNB so I hope she loses and the owners decide to send her to Fairyhouse instead
                              Prediction - Royal Kahala
