  • Every year there's a frenzy to get the best Mares re-routing to the championship races, when they upgraded the Mares to a G1 is was to incentivise and develop the Mares programme and of course that followed with a novice race and the upcoming promise of a Mares chase.
Not everyone agrees with it but the programme is here to stay and is likely to mean more Mares stay racing against their own sex...

Benie has entry in the Stayers and I genuinely think if she wins tomorrow and Paisley Parks shows any signs of weakness on Saturday she will come here. Mullins still has strength in depth in the Mares with or without Benie to take on Honeysuckle.

      • I don’t think that’s true if paisley doesn’t win but there’s a lot of ifs and buts still to come.

Benie will go mares imo because it’s the easiest grade 1 to win, especially if honeysuckle goes ch.

He’s not going to risk benie taking on paisley and et al if honey goes champion. Even if honey is still going for the mares I reckon only stormy island would possibly give honey a race so bdd will likely still go mares imo.

Benie will go mares pretty certain of that. After last year, and Mullins places them in the easiest races possible.

            • The Mares programme has been a big success in getting more to run, than breeding early instead, and this has led to more decent ones filtering up into the 140’s and 150’s. With Honeysuckle and Benie at 159 and 158, they become potent in open grade 1s too.

I don’t think the Mares programme was devised for them all to run solely in Mares races. There will be more and more likelihood to that if the number of decent ones continues to rise, they will have more an more say in Stayers, Champion Hurdle, Aintree Hurdle etc.

The move on from that, with the Mares Chase programme, is that it would follow that more Mares will then be likely, with a 7lb allowance to move into the Gold Cup and Champion Chase, rather than stopping mainly over hurdles (which is what happens at present, without a Cheltenham Festival Mares Chase).

              Look forward to that day.

Yep he just strongly suggested she's worth an EW bet - will be the only reason.

                  • Remember this is the stayers thread, put up for the mares just to avoid confusion.

Not soley no, but certainly to encourage Mares to enter racing and compete for decent prizes within their own sex...

Yes, I agree, there will be plenty of Mares in the Mares Hurdle. Maybe even more if BDD went to the Stayers and Won, and Honeysuckle the Champion Hurdle and won. What a victory for the Mares programme then.

All about getting more top class Mares races with big prize money and the best Mares running in them. If Honey went Churdle and Benie Stayers then that would not be deemed as a victory for the supporters of the programme.
