  • Riders Onthe Storm looked knackered crossing line he gave his all , plenty close enough to Cheltenham to think Ascot was main objective .

Not a backer for Cheltenham personally , see it a straight gun fight between Plus Tard and Min

edit - think ground and conditions much worse today though, so maybe not worth the comparison
Fractions for me suggest a better time rating for Copperhead than for Riders on the Storm. Copperhead was slower than standard by 37.8 secs over 3ml compared with Riders being 37.6 slower over 2ml 5f. Would be interesting what time Copperhead covered the last 2ml 5f of his race. Hopefully some Boffin will do a comparison.

It can sometimes hinge on a couple of furlongs though.
You go 3 or 4 seconds too quick over one or two fences in the last mile it can really take it's toll.
Very difficult science in this discipline.
The american flat stuff on left hand turning tracks though is extremely accurate and shows how it can hinder or help horses of very similar ability.

        • I got talking to Hamish Macauley in the 21 Club after Trials. Nice chap, he bought ROTS for £50k and immediately moved him to the Twisters yard, his reasoning being he was a fan of the yard and jockey. Anyway he told me it was a sure thing for the Ryanair. I had a point or two at decent odds the morning after but I didn't have a bean on him for the today.

Interestingly Macauley's nap was The Bosses Nephew in the Pipe.

Owner fancies own horse, sure thing to win the Ryanair.

            Naps different horse?

Better off with tips from jockeys than owners

Thanks for passing this on though OscarWhiskey People will be pleased to hear confidence (if they've already backed him, no doubt)

I can't make this post not sound sarcastic, because it is, but not towards you haha

            • All in a Pub after a day at the races too.
I'm fucking King of the world by that time.

              But I think he's (Macauley) a genius.

              • No offence taken at all Kev, I thought exactly the same thing ref 'Owner fancies own horse'....! Put it this way, I put far more on The Bosses Nephew the following day once I'd sobered up than I did on ROTS!

Interesting though, he's bought a fair few decent horses in his time and he was adamant ROTS was a good buy and, after today's first prize, who can argue with him irrespective whether Traffic F would've stayed up or not...

In terms of the Ryanair I've very much an A Plus Tard man. I've backed both Min and ROTS too so the only way I see me not making a return is if Bryony and her Pegasus sprout wings again. Would be a great story, I just hope personally its not one I'll be reading about post race!

                • Ha! You're right Q, he was baring his b0ll0cks for all to see late doors, I was just pleased to get a few of his thoughts and drown myself in a few Champagne and Red Bulls (I kid you not!) he was dishing out for all who would listen to him.

But he knew his stuff. And I must admit his 365 balance looked a lot more healthy than mine (was showing me his bets on The Bosses Nephew so I knew he wasn't having me on!)…...

I dont know if this is written in cryptic clues, or am I reading into it too much? Similar names horses can easily be mentioned (in sure I am guilty of it) someone even said sizing john earlier instead of sporting john. I take it you mean Bosses OSCAR? I've had a few drinks and even started to really over think things with your name being after Oscar Whisky, that perhaps you where trying to tell us you where the Bosses nephew? Hamish Maculeys Nephew?

                    Bosses oscar right?

It took me a couple of minutes to realise my mistake, even when Kev pointed it out!

                        • Sorry for confusion Big Bucks.

The Bosses Oscar was his nap.

Oscar Whisky and Peddlers Cross were my favourite horses when I got into the sport. I plumped for the former!

Loved Peddlars Cross. Was during the period I would follow Donald McCain and it was one of my favourite hurdles at the time! Was just unlucky to come against Hurricane Fly one year in the Champion Hurdle, otherwise would have a win in its portfolio for the feature race!

Agree, but I would kinda like to be wrong. Was ballsy running today, but the time was 15s+ slower than recent winners of this on soft, so it was a proper proper slog. ROTS actually clocked quite an impressive time on heavy in his run before today, so all backers can do is cross their fingers and hope he comes out of it ok.

                              • When Cyrname beat Altior many were thinking it was the end of the road for Altior. Has the opposite happened though, and it's completely bottomed out Cyrname? He certainly hasn't ran to the same level of form since.

                                Just a thought.
