Who do ye think are the top horses to follow for the season

  • #2
    Welcome to the forum Halligan135.

There are so many! I'll give you a few that I am really looking forward to. Most are obvious, but these are the ones I have backed that I hope do well:

A Plus Tard - seriously exciting horse. Falls under the 'could be anything' bracket, but won at Cheltenhan like a graded weapon competing in a handicap and will be interesting to see where they go. I am convinced he has more speed than they perhaps give him credit for. Any race

Envoi Allen - one of my highlights last year. Put to bed any doubt people had over Irish form by winning the bumper and beating a horse held in high regard. Bumpers don't tend to produce repeat winners but I think this years bumper was a particularly good one and the manner in which he fought on suggests going further over time will suit. Hopefully ballymore

Delta Work - my main Gold Cup hopeful. Super impressed with the way he traveled into the closing stages of the RSA. There's a thread on here about improvement from 6 to 7 and I think we'll see that with Delta Work this coming season. Jumps beautifully, enjoys it round Cheltenham and is very exciting indeed.

Battleoverdoyen - My thoughts on him are explained more in the RSA thread but to sum up briefly, if I was typing this in one year from now, then you can remove 'delta work' from the above and put in Battleoverdoyen - future Gold Cup horse. RSA

Princess Vega - Can't wait to see if she retains her mothers ability. Will be exciting to follow if she does. Mares Novice

The really solid ones with the best form from last season IMO and many others

      Minella Indo
      Klassical Dream
      Gypsy Island
      Honeysuckle
      Paisley park

      And less obvious maybe -

      Emitom
      Burrows saint
      Magic saint
      Discorama
      Reserve tank

      As Charlie says though.
There’s shitloads and probably depends why you’re asking ?

If you're new to the game and want a general overview with more in depth comments, I'd recommend buying some books:

Joseph O’Briens Midnight Run is definitely one to follow in novice hurdles over 2m4f+

I was very impressed with Burrows Saint last season especially his win in the Irish National which can often be a chaotic race loaded up with Gigginstown cannon fodder, he was very impressive. It won’t happen but if I had the authority I would send him to the cross country at the Festival and take Tiger Roll on and follow the same route to the Grand National. The way he jumped and travelled around Fairyhouse was very similar to Tiger Roll and he’s one of only a few horses in training I think could genuinely trouble TR

Does anybody know what the plans are for the Dan Skelton trained Beakstown this year?? Is he staying hurdling or going chasing?? I think he has the potential to be a top chasing prospect from what I saw of him last year.

Cheers Jackie. I read he had the scope for chasing but after he pulled up in AB he’s snuck under the radar so not sure what the plan was this season. I think I need to sort out a Twitter for this season as miss out on a lot of updates.

He’s a huge horse so likely to progress a lot this season.

                        Thanks for the welcome Charlie.

Have a watch of this video. My cousin is in it along with two other horse racing pundits. I think it's very good and the 3 of them are entertaining when they get heated about horses they follow.

Also, Princess Vega had a great start at Tramore and if she is half the horse her mother is she could be very good.

Two expensive purchases in my tracker who could be one for novice hurdles or the bumper.

The Big Breakaway: bought for €360K in May for Colin Tizzard and one he really likes according to James Stevens on Twitter.

Wide Receiver: bought for £410K by Tom Malone and Gordon Elliott in February.

The 2 I had on my list for the bumper have both gone to Willie Mullins and owned by Cheveley Park:
                              Ferny Hollow
                              Deploy The Getaway
