Completely disagree. Altior is in a different league. Defi us very good yeah but Altior will out battle him up hill.

    • Defi Du Seuil won very easily but the bare form through the third is pretty rubbish.

I got the impression that Mullins was very disappointed with the second and felt he hadn't run his race. So the winner had one horse to pick up who probably has run well below.

The Champion Chase is likely to be considerably more difficult. Irrespective of the opposition I wouldn't be that confident about Barry steering anything around Cheltenham without at least one bungle on the way.

Probably the one jockey you’d want on a horse round Cheltenham! Ride of the year on Sire Du Berlais last year as an example wasn’t a bad one on Defi Du Seuil in the JLT either...

The impression I got from Mullins was he had his horse a1 today and expected to win but got effortlessly brushed aside. I think Willie Mullins realised he has no horse who can beat DDS in the champion chase and that includes Chacun Pour Soi, Cilaos Emery, Un De Sceaux and thats why he looked so despondant.

So your saying that Mullins best 2mile chaser is a 12yo? Yawns

Yeah - highly unlikely to bother running anything against him. Save them all for Punchestown. Mind you, there is the small matter of CPS absolutely laughing at Defi last Spring - actually that probably wont count as Defi was ever so tired, right?

                • CPS has to be the bet at the prices in this.

Defi has done marvellous- I thought it was all over in that second season hurdling (stepping up to open company) and is the rightful fav for this. What an amazing couple of seasons since then.

Altior I think has been on the wane for a while and I say that with complete admiration for the horse. He was grinding it out rather than blowing them away, which he could do and I think people have hugely overstated Cyrnames win over a horse that simply wasn’t at it on the day. The fact he wasn’t ready to run anywhere since suggests that he wasn’t at his best.

For some bizarre reason, 2m chase hotpots in Ireland don’t seem to perform well at Leopardstown- remember when Simply Ned won?! Chacs punchestown performance last year surely puts him in the mix?

Only worry would be Ricci fancying a crack at the Ryanair without Defi and Altior.

On a side note, is Douvan fully ruled in/out?

No im saying that Mullins knows his own horses better than anybody else and will have a strong idea of where they all stand and that I think he looked despondant because he thought he was in a very strong positon for this race but now realises that he isnt any where near where he thought he was.

Or possibly a bit despondent at the fact he had UDS a1 for potentially his last chance of picking up a grade 1?

Not saying UDS is done but at his age, a small field grade 1 likely his best chance to adding to his total.

DDS looks very very good and Willie will have to have his darts a1 come March that’s for sure as defi stays further and will pounce as late as possible. Plus side for Mullins he will likely have numerous runners and top class runners at that.

You need to lay off the juice Lobos.

                          • According to the offical ratings Un De Sceaux is Mullins best 2m chaser and its quite possible Mullins thought Un de Sceaux was the best he had.

                            UN DE SCEAUX 170
                            CHACUN POUR SOI 169
                            DOUVAN 167
                            CILAOS EMERY 165

                            • Douvan is made of glass and wont come here.

Cilaos Emery beat Ornua by 9 lengths recieving 11lb. Defi The Destroyer beat Ornua 64 lengths off level weight. DDS is on another planet to Cilaos Emery.
Chacun Pour Soi was disappointing when turned over at 8/15 in a 4 runner race and may be a big disappointment outside of novice company.
Un De Sceaux was probably Willies main hope of The Champion Chase and he now knows he cannot stop The Destroyer.

I know we should ignore you when you say stuff like this but I think it’s important that it doesn’t go unchallenged.

Why would Altior be pulled up? As a winner of 19 of his 20 races over obstacles and the other race being second, why would he be pulled up?
