He had the choice of three maiden winners, so they made the choice from the evidence they had, Which that season was limited.
They obviously will take home work into account, but not over and above everything else.

Had either of the other two had a couple of grade one novices under their belt and were 4/6 favourites he wouldn't have rode melon.

They have to prove it on the track. And earn the right.

Whilst i'd probably agree, Bunk Off Early was 2nd in a G1 on his second start having travelled a dream. In theory, on form he held every right to be the no.1?

Melon didn't get the chance to go for another race prior to cheltenham. For whatever reason.

The others (including Crack Mome who I forgot about) all had a pop at graded races after their maiden wins. They all failed.

He'll have looked at their respective form, and so would Ruby. and clearly none had really staked a claim, so they went with Melon.
If you read what I originally said (1st paragraph) properly you'll understand.
I never said he's only take form on the course to make decisions, just that form on the track will usually count for more.
Surely to god this is as obvious as Kirsty Gallagher being No1.

        • Crack Mome also came 2nd in the G1 Moscow Flyer and could have gone one better with a better jump at the last. They clearly knew who the best was from their work at home.

          • If Either of you two can find me an example of Ruby riding a maiden winner in preference to a multiple graded race winner I'll give up.

If they clearly knew who was best. How come Cilaos Emery beat Melon at Punchestown ????
Melon went off 5/4 and was heavily backed.
Leave me alone with your nonsense.

                • And from Memory, Pingshou and Melon set that race up for Cilaos. But he may prove to be better.

Willie ranks his horse's according to what they do in actual races on the course. They earn his full respect there.
Even if he has an idea who is likely to end up the best, from seeing them in training or practice races, there is no real substitute to a proper race.

                    This no?

So finishing 2nd in a G1 on his second start didn't count because Melon didn't make it to the track for a second race?

                    You're like an angry politician

                      I'd say he already has.
                      Melon's still not won a grade 1.
Seems like he's a work horse who's not quite converted it on the track.
except the first tuesday of cheltenham where he runs to form.

                      Kirsty
I would also ride Jo Wilson.

Quevega is spot on and it’s why trying to draw comparisons/conclusions/assumptions/form lines from facile debut wins is largely a waste of time

                          • Along with the RSA thread previously I wont bother posting or looking in on this one. For no other reason than Iv already played my hand here and hopefully they will make it to the race.

Daylight katie is the only other one that somewhat Interests me, shes got a bit more pace than last years winner, but I'll certainly be looking out the back for her, hoping she dosent come with a late rattle. I'm assuming she was probably 33s at one point. I should have covered her. But nevermind.

For what it’s worth when Gordon was pressed pre season to name a potential star under the radar he named her
