  • I'd be very surprised if Patrick went pro. He's proud of his amateur record, and he's setting records that may last forever.
Luck is a dividend of sweat. The more I sweat, the luckier I get.

He won't have to stay pro forever if he does it

Not 100%, but it makes complete sense. His potential rides this year are immense and he could switch back for next season.

            • I’ll revert back to my previous statement then. I don’t expect Patrick to switch.

Why wouldn't he ? He has some serious rides at Cheltenham and could ride at Aintree as well plus Fairyhouse and Punchestown if he likes. As I understand, as long as he doesn't ride 25 winners as a professional he can switch back for next season. Where's the issue ??

                • Acswitch has to made with the intention of it being permanent.

A switch back has to be with good reason or it’s not allowed.

Patrick is on record as being proud about the amateur records he’s setting.

He’s also said he wants to extend them and set more.

He won’t sell his soul for the sake of four days, and for waiting for 13 more before he can freely ride as an amateur again.

                  He won’t go pro.

Just playing devils advocate, he would still be able to ride in Aintree, Fairyhouse and Punchestown if he remains amateur..

                    • For info, the last report I read on this topic published yesterday:

LEADING amateur jockey, Patrick Mullins, has confirmed he will make his mind up over the weekend or early next week about whether he will turn professional so that he can ride for his father, Willie, at Cheltenham this year.

It comes as authorities confirmed amateurs will be banned from the Festival due to government restrictions on grassroots sports.

“Obviously I am very disappointed. I have an exceptional book of rides over there. I have two favourites in Kilcruit (Champion Bumper favourite) and Billaway (Foxhunters Chase). I have Sharjah who is a very good ride in the Champion Hurdle. I am very disappointed so I suppose I have to give serious thought about whether my hand is forced to turn professional in order to take those rides,” he said.

He is also set to ride Melon for his father in the Ryanair Chase while he is also certain to would have had some nice spares over the four days of the Festival.

“It would be a big decision so we are going to have to think about it over the next few days and weigh up the pros and cons.”

Patrick Mullins with Melon at Closutton but it remains to be seen whether he will be able to ride him at Cheltenham

The reason for joining the professional ranks are easily identified. Apart from a list of quality rides, he and his father form a dynamic team. Patrick also knows Willie’s horses almost better than the champion trainer does himself.

The Cons are also quite clear.

Obviously I would lose this year’s amateur championship (before the weekend he was two winners ahead of Jamie Codd). Turning professional, I wouldn’t be doing it out of choice if you know what I mean,” Patrick admitted.

Patrick says his father is set to let him make the decision himself.

“We have to sit down and talk about it. He is willing to go with whatever I think.”

The decision by the British authorities to ban amateur riders means other leading Irish amateurs such as Codd and Derek O’Connor will not be going to the Cotswold venue this year. They have announced they will not turn professional.

“I am probably in a special case that I have my place in some good professional races for my father which other amateurs probably don’t have. Jamie and Derek said they won’t (apply to turn professional). The only reason I am considering it is that I have extra rides for my father outside the amateur races,” explained Patrick.

The decision to let him return to the amateur ranks if Patrick turns professional and then return to the amateur scene will come from a committee within the Irish Horseracing Board. The record breaking jockey says it is not an exact science.

“I am not sure what the conditions are. The committee can impose different conditions on different people regarding the circumstances. It is not a black and white rule,” he says.

.....but not Cheltenham. I don't see the issue.

I don't have a dog in this fight, I don't care what he does tbh. I just thought you were making the point if he turns pro, he could ride in these three meetings also..

I'm sure he has been in contact with the Irish authorities to see if they can have some special arrangement for him and the others if possible, like a 2 week temporary licence. Will make the process a hell of a lot easier on them.

The thing is, Fairyhouse, Aintree and Punchestown don't have as many Amatuer only races that he would miss out on as Cheltenham do so turning pro for the remainder of this season would be the best option imo

                            • I could be wrong but I thought there something like 8/9 amateur riders races at Punchestown, hunter chases and bumpers...
