  • Wasn’t sure where to ask this but how likely am I (and a mate) to make racing on the Thursday if we arrive at Cheltenham 12.52 for opening race?

Down for the Friday and hoping if we managed the Thursday as well.

Done the Friday once before and got a bus right outside the station then jumped off and walked because it was that busy. I’m reckoning not very likely but more experienced folk will know better than me.

    • I think you'd have a good shout Craigy.

Thursday less busy than Friday, by 1.00pm-ish most people will be on course so the roads get miles less busy then. So long as you can get a bus or a cab you should go (almost) straight through at that time.

And what's the worst that can happen? You watch the JLT on your phone and are there in good time for the Pertemps - what's not to like?!

      • MIN @ 3/1, 2M 5F, RYANAIR CHASE

It looks like Min will step up in trip for the Ryanair Chase after the younger Chacun Pour Soi proved a little too good for him in the two mile Dublin Chase at the Dublin Racing Festival.

There was no shame in defeat and by the time Min comes to race in this we’ll know exactly how his Leopardstown conqueror got on in the Champion Chase the day before.

He was spectacular at Aintree last season over 2m 4f and impressive again over the same trip on his seasonal debut in the Grade One John Durkan Chase at Punchestown.

The step up in trip will help him at Cheltenham and he hasn’t got a rating of 171 for nothing.

Here is Walsh tipping up Min in his PP news column
Said he didn’t fancy it last night at a preview

Yeah he's been nothing but complimentary about Min on every episode of Road To Cheltenham aswell, using Min as the reason he fancies CPS for the CC. I dont understand the preview night stuff. Do people really go on there to give false information? for what purpose? Will him slagging Min on one preview night move markets?

            Perfect mate, appreciate the info.

I did wonder if most would be on course so roads a little quieter haha!

            Cheers

            • With Champagne Classic being ruled out today it reminds me of a point I think Archie made earlier in the season about the risk in backing horses that had missed a previous Festival through injury. Off the top of my head that’s Malone Road, Saldier and CC that have failed to turn up 2 years in a row now. Some stats perhaps to look at in the summer

                  • This year I have have now lost ante post bets on 18 different horses because of injury. Unbelievable. This years is like no other. Who says horses get injured less on soft ground?

                    • Strange question, wasn’t sure where to post it, but does anyone know when the Racing post cheltenham ultimate guide newspaper is out in shops? Says posted out 28th Feb online, but I usually get it from my local shop, which has sadly closed. Not sure where else sells it.

I’ve lost 34 horses so far from injury, set backs or bypassing the festival in my Antepost betting ‘portfolio’ and more annoyingly quite a number of them I had little belief or love beforehand for but chased the wave in the market in fear of missing out. I can’t say I had any confidence in Champagne Classic, Glenloe, Douvan backed anyway. Lots of mistakes to be noted and learnt from for next year but on the plus side I’ve still got 196 horses backed and still in play so got a good chance of getting some money back

Yeah I know I’m missing out on a number of good strategies like the free bet offers which I plan to take advantage of next season. Plus I need to learn how to lay horses. I’ve been too indecisive this year and instead of betting what I felt was the right horse I have ended up following other people’s selections and watering down my potential profit. I finally backed Rouge Vif in the Arkle today which was the only horse in the market I didn’t have covered. It’s pathetic as I may have the top 3 places in the Arkle and still make a loss on the race!! Lots to learn for next season but at least I’ll win a few races!!

                          • It’s OK to have a losing bet as long as you understand why the bet lost, you learn from it, and make better judgements/improve your strategies next time.
                            I wish you well...

Cheers buddy, I think I’m in a stronger position this festival thanks to the advice, guidance and thoughts on this Forum to back up my own judgement but I’ve been very wasteful at the same time. I just want the Festival to start now as every day that passes I’m expecting to lose another backed horse and a load of bets with it.
