I get the above responses, but if you laid a horse for ?10 at 100/1, do you literally have to hand over ?1000 there and then? Or can it be smarter than that?

I see some of you guys laying things off at huge prices (to make it essentially a free bet, which I totally get) but the thought of putting that much money up to lay a horse has always scared me!
You don't have to - as the profit on the win bet you placed ,just reduces as the lay bet is made.
You have no liability as you can't lose.
So in the scenario above - each horse would have zero pounds against it and the horse in question a green six hundred pounds.
    give or take commission stuff.

Nah, Betfair is clever. Using my example, if BOTN wins the Supreme, they'd take the ?1000 i owe in bet 2 from the ?2000 i won in bet 1. So you don't need to have any funds in your account. Robbing Peter to pay Paul, essentially.

      That's in my example though.

If you just really didn't like a horse and decided to lay it (without backing it first at higher odds) you would need money in your account. So say you just thought BOTN was shite so laid him at 100/1 for ?10, you'd need ?1000 in your account to cover your liabilities. I don't do this. I don't have the ringpiece for it.

Thanks for the replies, I understand now Yeah Q I did notice you doing it a fair bit from your diary. Might be something I look into doing next year a little.

        • If you've backed a horse on the exchange and want to lay it off you don't actually have to deposit any extra money

Say you stick a tenner on a horse

All the other horses then say -?10 and are in the red

Said horse shortens massively, you lay it at the new price for whatever is needed to get your ?10 bet

The initial horse you backed will say +?whatever the rest will now say ?0 not -?10

The ?10 youve made back with the trade will be immediately be in your account

No idea if that made sense, it did in my head

            • I've backed Silver Sheen antepost with BFSB in the Pertemps. At no.37 it looks unlikey that he will get in now. Money lost or will I get it back?

Cracking discussion on this the other week that I'd like to hear again but if he's entered and then doesn't get in due to rating / field size (i.e. is balloted out) then you'll get money back.

I wondered this the other day as I purchased e tickets back in April. And couldn't remember printing them off.

But I checked my emails and they sent them in December on the 16th.

Not sure if you asked for e-tickets or not, but if so, it may be worth going back to December in your emails.

I rang them today as still not received mine
They said they didn’t know where they were and would reprint them and send again today
if you only bought tatts or best mate you could probably print them off
There should be an attachment on the end of your email
However, If you require badges for club enclosure they would need to be posted
