  • ....can apprentices take advantage of weight allowance in Cheltenham handicaps? Just thinking of TBO.

I used to back whichever one Ruby was on. They were usually a half decent price as Patrick was on the shortest priced runner. Can't remember many winners, but had a good run for my money.

      2012 - Pique Sous 3rd 12/1
      2013 - Briar Hill 1st 25/1
      2014 - Shaneshill 2nd 7/2
      2015 - Bellshill 10th 14/1
      2016 - Bacardys 3rd 16/1
      2017 - Next Destination 4th 10/1
2018 - Carefully Selected 2nd 6/1 was injured so jockey change

I thought my tactic was over following Ruby's retirement, but the new Mullins number 1, Townend, steered Ferny Hollow to victory at 11/1 last year.

Nothing very scientific, but I don't really care for spending much time on bumpers. Tend to watch them from the bar anyway...

      • Stupid one for you

Do OR ratings include the mares allowance?

For example honeysuckle top rating is 160 , sharjah is 166 . Does the 160 include 7 pounds mares allowance?

                  Well done for asking.

It isn't clear, and it should be!

                  It confuses me in handicaps

                  • Does the handicapper take account of a claimer when assessing the run of a horse?

For example if a 140 horse has a jockey on board claiming 7lbs and runs to 140, would the handicapper drop him cos he’s effectively run below his rating.
Or is it the price you pay for trying to ‘game the system’? I know you’re not doing anything wrong but you know what I mean.

                    • Saw the post race interview with Aidan Coleman at Catterick earlier where he talked of heavy at Catterick being like soft at Wetherby. It's never really crossed my mind before but now i'm curious if anyone has ever looked into just how heavy is heavy, how good is good etc... at certain courses (not sure how you'd even quantify it?!) or if it's so trivial and open to interpretation that there's not much point/it'd be impossible. I suspect the latter, but here we are, live from the stupid questions thread...

I thought there was a stick they dropped now to give a reading that should be the same no matter which course you’re at?
But that wouldn’t explain why it’s always desperate at Haydock, no matter

Yeah there's the going stick, which i've always assumed is the same everywhere?! Just curious as regardless, conditions at courses are often described as being markedly different/unique.

The soil will definitely have a different make up to it.
As will the moisture content %.

Not sure exactly what the going stick measures, whether it's just how far it goes in, when given a set amount of pressure, or is more sophisticated than that.

And obviously they only check the going at designated areas of each course.
Some courses will have more higher ground, than lower and vice versa.
Then there are of course shaded areas and protected areas of ground at many courses.
