New course runs right to bottom of the racecourse and hence very bottom of hill with longest climb on run in

Old course is inside it and so more run on the turn

First 2 days old course, last 2 days new course

Tiger Roll has answered robith but if you ever get the chance to walk the course you’ll see why.
The new course continues it’s climb up the hill on the far side by another 200+ yards, the hill down to the straight means horses have a longer up hill climb so are effectively running uphill but around 300-400 yards more per circuit...

Don't think anyone knows DG. Old Vic probably does, I haven't seen him for a whole though.

            Yeah no idea...

I'd like to guess it was a place for armchair jockeys to discuss racing as we're too fat to be able to do it properly

I assume there was some humour to it...

Someone has a company set up called Fat Jockey too.... but nothing to do with here. That's stranger?

A pet hate of mine too Kot. I can understand it to some extent if the horse is at the front but often they are near mid division or the rear. At least get up with the pace before you waste energy fighting the horse.

Think this fits the title perfectly as I should definitely know such things, but here goes...
In last months cross-country, Easysland carried 11-8 and Kingswell Theatre 9-13. So why after winning comfortably (with a lost shoe) is KT up only 1lb on Friday, but Easysland is up 4lb? I thought it'd probably be explained by age, but 10yo Potters Corner who was 3rd will carry 8lb more than November and the 8yo in 2nd, Beau Du Brizais, carries 6lb less this time?!

Weights are allocated according to the Official ratings of the horse.

In a handicap the top rated horse will carry the maximum weight for that race. In this case 11st 12lb.
In the last race, Tiger Roll was top rated (171) and carried 11st 12lb, and therefore as Easysland was rated 4lb lower (167) he carried only 11st 8lb.

Kingswell actually ran from 18lb out of the weights the last day as his rating was a lot lower than the lowest weight allowed in the handicap, So he carried a weight (10 stone) as though he was rated 145 but was actually rated only 127 I think.

He is now officially rated 140 I reckon, and this will still leave him 1lb out of the handicap weights, so will be forced to carry and extra 1lb, as though he;s rated 141.
He should basically piss up on Friday. If he runs to the same level.

They’re affectively totally different shapes. The new course is a longer, more stamina sapping test up the hill. Always think the back straight at cheltenham on the new course is important too. Tougher jumping test imo.

Could anyone enlighten me on when an antepost market for say one of the festival handicaps becomes an overound market,? I was trying last year to find a sweet spot for when to introduce some horses into the handicap markets and found tje overounds didnt make sense even with 50 - 60 horses listed, this was in mid to late jan, has anyone got an idea of when the best time is to introduce horses into the handicap markets? 2 questions really..

Thanks Q, like I say, I really should know this stuff Partly because I assumed that Easysland was top rated last time and criminally forgot all about the Tiger.

Handicaps such as Fridays race are framed based on the official ratings (OR) of the horses entered/declared and not a race by race basis. Easyland has a handicap mark of 167 unchanged from last months race where he was getting 4lb from the top weighted Tiger Roll (171).
Kingswell Theatre that day carried 10.0 but was running from 18 lb out of the handicap. He was rated 127 and on the long handicap would carry 8.10. But because of minimum weight rules had to carry 10.0 effectively of an OR of 145. He has gone up 13lbs to 140 for winning that race, but that is still 5 lb lower than what he carried when he won.

If both Easyland KT run on Friday KT will have to carry 10.0 (OR 141) before jockey claim if any.

Potters Corner has come down 1lb in the ratings 151 to 150. Then you have to allow that he had a 5 lb claimer on board who is now a 3 lb claimer.

Clear as mud, boy am I sorry I tried answering a handicap question
