  • The two horses I have been most impressed with that could give Shishkin and Envoi a good race.........Captain Guinness and Protektorat.
They both have jumped well thus far and to me are both fair e/w chances and could possibly upset the favs.
They probably won't,but for me at the prices,an e/w double appeals.

Captain Guinness has a lot of appeal for me too at the prices for reasons I’ve written about in my diary when I backed him & after his win, he was what a best price of 16s if memory serves me right for the Arkle before his debut? Okay, you had the heart issue, but I wouldn’t like to attempt to put a price on that rearing it’s head again, I’m not a vet and honestly wouldn’t know where to start, IMO now he’s proved his well being it’s best to just ignore it unless you’re confident you can put some sort of figure on how likely it is to re-occur. Anyhow, had he won on debut how he won the last day, he’d probably be 10/1, maybe even shorter? He’s currently 20s with proper cash out, great bet if you don’t want the fav at odds-on IMO. His debut puts him in an awkward spot for getting 2 more runs in including one proper challenge before the Arkle, but you’d have to have every confidence in the trainer.

Probably aim for the Arkle novice G1 at Leopardstown (DRF) early February, same as Notebook last year

I think they are planning to run him next weekend. If the Bloom horse turns up it'll certainly be a decent test.

Yes, I was assuming so, but probably means going there with only 2 runs unless he can get another one in very soon.

Probably right FM. I looked back at last years Naas card featuring Lawlors of Naas nov. hurdle. It had a novice chase which Cash Back won in his 2nd novice chase, before running 2nd behind Notebook at the DRF. Fit in well too as there is a 4 week break before DRF

Yep it's the race HDB said they were targeting on the Nick Luck podcast and I think WPM has also mentioned it for Energumene

                • I was hoping to get a nice price on Eklat De Rire for the NHC, ran very well at Punchestown last month beating School Boy Hours comfortably (Run Wild Fred 38 lengths back), i notice it's price differs from 20-1 (B365) to 33-1 (Lads) but isnt priced up at all by PP or Skybet.

Do we think that this would be the target ?

It’s entered and also I think now qualified

it’s a good shout and always like Henry’s so might have a small punt too

Maybe better informed people on here tho can give u a better idea

Looks an excellent long distance chase prospect. My main reservation regarding the 4 miler would be the trainer. I haven’t checked the history but HdB is not someone I associate with this race. Perhaps he just doesn’t usually have the ‘types’, so this worry might be misplaced. The horse is also quite inexperienced which is usually seen as a negative for this race.

If I thought he was being aimed here I’d be very interested indeed at the prices.

                      • Yes, he’s one I’ve mentioned before on here. If I were to back him I’d want cash out, and with 365 only 20’s and PP not pricing him up I’m waiting. As VF says, De Bromhead isn’t known for sending his horses here, which is sufficient to want the safety net. I do think he may send this one though as he looks made for the race.

                        • Had a horrible dream last night that Shishkin was looking beat in the Arkle but suddenly closed on the front two who’d gone off 20 lengths clear (was a horse in the Allmankind colours so presumably him and a Gigginstown horse - no idea who that would be though) when the front two fell at the second last and brought down Shishkin who’d nearly caught them.

Woke up gutted that the Shishkin and Envoi double had lost.

However, what should have given the game away that I was dreaming was that:
                          1) I was at the track when I’ve resigned myself to knowing there won’t be crowds there.
                          2) They fell at the second last on the New Course when the Arkle is of course run on the Old Course on the Tuesday.
                          3) I wasn’t in the crowd. For some reason I was standing on the inside of the track on the bend by the photographers looking down the straight (the horses arses were facing me as they jumped the second last).

Woke up so relieved that he’d not lost! The double lives on lads..
