  • It seems quite a task for top young horses to run a 3m tough race around cheltenham, if i was a trainer id much prefer keeping him at the intermediate trip this coming season then step him up as a second season novice..but ill cover regardless

Spot on. Big player with Envoi. Huge player without. The Marsh being on the Thursday means that the ground could be unfavorable for Envoi especially if the weather is good.

      • Not sure about that. Did Cheveley not over rule Willie with regards Allaho this year?

          • Im sat here half worrying about not having him covered in the RSA (with most my bets doubles trebles and yankees involving only the marsh!) but i looked at his odds for the RSA @ 7/1 im pretty happy with just having a lump as a single this weekend, then call it a day for the time being

Was supposed to quote and reply to comply or die with that, regards to saying Gordon will decide.

              • So that everyone has more context, I'll provide this to you from the book as it effects a lot of you. I will not post anymore excerpts though as you should buy the book as it's a very good read.

                Envoi Allen (Gordon Elliott)
WHAT more can I say about Envoi Allen? I’m sure
we are going to head over fences with him and I
would have thought that the RSA will be his end
of season target. Going up in trip shouldn’t be a
problem, as he was running on well at the end of
the Ballymore, and we will, hopefully, be looking
at the Gold Cup with him at some stage, so I think
the RSA makes sense. He has everything, however,
so has all options open to him, and he enjoyed a
                good summer over in Gordon’s.

I COULDN’T leave out envoi allen (who I have
included in each of the past two years) after what
he achieved again last season, despite obviously
not riding him on the track. He was exceptional
throughout the whole of last season, rounding it
off with a great performance in Cheltenham in the
Ballymore, where he certainly wasn’t stopping,
suggesting that he will have no problem in stepping
up in trip. A graduate from Colin Bowe’s yard,
he has always schooled very well at home, and we
are all looking forward to him getting going over
fences. The hope is that he continues to progress
and ends up a Gold Cup horse of the future.

                • That throws the cat amongst the pigeons on a quiet Thursday at the start of September.

I have the Paul Ferguson book ordered myself so hopefully receive my hard copy this weekend.

Envoi will be 7 by next March, so he should be plenty old enough (a year older than A Plus Tard was, this year, when running close in the Ryanair).

Its always the same with Novice Hurdlers and Novice Chasers, you need to know what connections are thinking (as well as what you have seen and are thinking) to be more sure of a target for them.

I remember Willie Mullins saying post-Ballymore, interviewed when in 3rd place in the winners enclosure, that he was really happy with the Big Getaway, he was always going to be a 3M chaser, and he said that would probably mean bumping into Envoi Allen again.

The RSA could be the novice race of the Festival, if Monkfish, Envoi Allen, The Big Getaway and Easywork and the rest, roll-up there.

                      • From those comments, thank you Jackie, it sounds like the RSA is the preferred route but obviously nothing is set in stone. It also means the likes of Monkfish, Fury Road and The Big Breakaway could drop down to the Marsh or step up to the NHC should they wish to avoid Envoi. Very intriguing stuff but a little annoying as well !

                        • Just checked my bets and have Envoi for the Marsh in 4 multiples and the rest are any race. Have to say though as impressive as he's been so far I don't know if I'd fancy him in the RSA. He's shown himself to be the best over the intermediate trip, but all those from the Bartlett look quality horses too. Plus there's horses who've missed a season or 2 like Bright Forecast, Dickie Diver and Next Destination to add further strength in depth. Personally I'd love to see him in the RSA as it'll answer more questions about him with a view to the Gold Cup.

                          • Agreed with above, I’d fancy him more for the Marsh than I would for the RSA

Although, I don’t mind him sticking around middle distance for another season before stepping up in trip the following season - should improve for the step up, whilst keeping him relevantly unexposed over that trip

                            • Whilst we are six months out and a lot can change, the RSA on paper looks as strong a renewal as I can remember from a generation who are deemed by most observers at this stage to be a very good one. Gordon does often say he puts horses in the races he thinks are the easiest to win so, if this crop of 3 milers are as good as they promise to be, you would think he would go for the Marsh. I also recall he wished he didn’t run Don Cossack in the RSA but given he fell that may be more to do with him just not being ready for it jumping wise rather than anything else. Flip side to this is that they probably think he’s unbeatable so will run him in the race that gives the best prep for a Gold Cup tilt in 2021.

Probably won’t know until Monday 19 October what he’s thinking when his stable guide will likely be out in the Racing Post.

                              • I'm not going to panic just yet and I still don't see him running in the RSA. If Gordon says different then I'll have to re-evaluate.
