      • For my own reference, next season's Arkle ....

Willie Mullins is at a loss to explain Melon's two disappointing runs this season.
Beaten just a neck in the Champion Hurdle by Buveur D'Air last March, he was only fourth on his comeback behind stablemate Sharjah at Christmas but was over 20 lengths behind Apple's Jade at Leopardstown on Saturday.
"He was disappointing. He was never going and I can't find anything wrong with him. That's two bad runs now for no apparent reason," said Mullins.
"We've changed a lot of things with him at home and worked him differently.

"I wonder at this stage does he need to go out in trip or is he looking for a fence.

"I think he's still not in form. His homework looks good but his racetrack work doesn't. Maybe it's ground, maybe he's better on much softer, we'll see.
"He ran a cracker at Cheltenham last year but I don't think we've had him back to that on the racetrack.
"We thought he was working really well at home but he's gone out and disappointed really badly.
"The mare (Apple's Jade) was fantastic. We could have run a lot better and still been behind the mare. It would have been hard to beat her even if we were right. She was very very good."

i’d have some trouble buying these quotes from Mullins regarding Melon’s strong homework and “at a loss for the poor run. Melon was very weak on the exchanges ahead of his run at the DRF and ran accordingly. Can see fences being right up his street. Perhaps they are already taking a forward looking view to next season

          • He'd need to show some form presuppose of Cheltenham to ever be a steamee in the market but they must regret not going chasing this year IMO

Maybe that's a tad early to say if he places again in a CH... I dunno

            • First pointer to the CE form tomorrow at Thurles tomos with Ex Patriot running against Arvico Bleu, who has a line in to LR. As a CE follower, I’d like to see Ex Patriot winning this.

                • I'd make him fav tomorrow, ground probably the only drawback.

Back to some normality, nice to see the first 2 there coming out of CE’s last race!

                          • Hard to know with the way the giggy horse finishes his races....Ex Patriot also made a mistake- i think the unlucky one was the 2nd horse...

Small form boost anyway + softer ground will see Ex Patriot in a better light.

No great conclusions taken and nothing negative in terms of formline
