I'm aware not everyone reads the Competitions part of the Forum so everytime we set a competition up, by way of notification, I'll just put a link here then this thread can just fall off the main pages naturally until the next one.

I note Ron has made a post in the competition forum asking whether members would be interested in a Saturday League and a subsequent reply from Kev suggesting he would like to wait and see what plans I have for competitions before sanctioning it. Ryan also has competitions planned or in progress so I have laid out my suggestions here where they are more likely to be seen.

Any competition plans I have are fluid and can be either abandoned or carried out at short notice as I have templates for all of them I would invite members here (those that are interested in competitions, I appreciate not everyone is) to give an indication what type they like and how often they like to take part. For my part I will give an illustration of the competitions I have run across various forums over the years, some of these forums are now defunct but some of the members here will have experience of them elsewhere and hopefully can vouch for the fact most of them have been succesful. I started them because it gives people the chance to have an interest in races, especially TV races, without laying out vast sums of money to test their punting skills. A lot of them are just for fun but a lot of have been sponsored by some of the competitors, the current TTF being a good example where we have multiple sponsors. I have toyed with the idea of small entry fees and got as far as a Paypal button on one of the forums but never actually put it into practice as some players were precluded from entering if they did not have a Paypal account.

So I have competitions for individuals, pairs, teams and inter forum, I will lay out a typical year.

Immediately after Christmas I run the Top Tipster competition over seven weekends which culminates at the Dublin Racing Festival (DRF)which seems to have been well accepted on here so far and which has been well complemented by MOM’s competition. Given there would only be four players left by the time the DRF comes round I also run a weekend competition for the DRF based on a P/L basis, similar to ones I have run on here since the Autumn with 10 pounds on each race, 20 pounds on your nap or possibly just a Yankee or a Lucky Fifteen one.

Between then and the Cheltenham Festival I sometimes do one or two more weekend ones, Newbury’s Betfair Meeting comes to mind. Then we have the Festival itself where I have done the same across the four days but as Ryan’s AP competition involves making choices for each race on the Sunday evening to add to the selections we have already made I’m currently undecided as don’t want to overkill things as most of you will be preoccupied with your betting that week so I may run this one elsewhere. One I will do anyway is a Cheltenham Prediction competition which is practically nothing to do with betting or picking winners (just one or two from memory) so you’ll have to wait and see on that one.

Moving to Aintree I do either a placepot competition whereby you may have either (Option A) 128 x 10p bets which is two horses in any 5 of the races and four horses in the other, or (Option B) you can have 64 X 20p bets, which is two horses in each race or one of the aforementioned P/L type of competitions.

Following this I may do a weekend comp based on the Sandown end of season meeting and then we have the Punchestown Festival where I do a Patently Punchestown one (self explanatory hopefully)

For Royal Ascot I do a points based competition where it can be beneficial to have large priced place horses rather than short priced winners (but not always), this format can be used on any of the larger meetings as well.

For Goodwood and Galway which take place in the same week late July I do a League Of Neightions contest, named after the now defunct Neigh forum where it was first held, between teams from Ireland, Scotland, Wales, England and Rest Of The World. There are no limits to the number in a team and there could be A & B teams if numbers really get too unmanageable, basically players make three selections at each meeting each day and one from each team has to be captain to determine tactics and make selections for one of his team as well as his own if they don’t turn up although there are other options in this eventuality. Old Vic used to be in the Scottish team, archie in the Wales team I seem to remember. This could just as easily evolve into North East, North West, Midlands. East Anglia, South West, South East, South teams if preferred, or teams from anywhere who join up and choose their own names or just a draw to see who ends up in each team. You could even use the Groups who have been involved in the current competition.

Don’t do too many in High Summer, a Yankee For York one maybe, based on the Ebor meeting as I begin working on the list of 200 horses for the TTF Comp about that time. Maybe some sort of competition culminating at Longchamp on Arc weekend as well and for Champions Day I do an inter forum contest with the help of a few others on their respective forums. Also a Flat season competition involving six staying races, eight sprints, eight one mile or thereabouts races, eleven middle distance races and twenty seven of the top handicaps.(60 top races), may need a bit of help setting that up as haven’t done it for a few years and not sure if the programme is the same these days and not really a flat afficionado.

Come the Autumn I help someone run a sponsored Ante Post competition elsewhere for the Cheltenham Festival with 1000 pounds to wager in Nov, Dec and Jan with 2000 pounds in February based on the prices on Oddschecker with minimum bet sizes to choose up to four horses each month with prizes being awarded to most valuable portfolio as at March 1st and most profitable portfolio once the Festival is over and also kick off the TTF on either Nov 1st or The Open meeting.

Maybe a Cheltenham based competition for each two to three day meeting, sometimes a meeting at a time or sometimes across the whole season (15 meetings) with bonuses awarded for coming first each day plus across the individual meetings.

I also have a set of competitions for more mundane spells of racing some of which I have never got round to introducing anywhere yet. These would include one based on The Chase television show, another for pairs having got the idea from Pointless, Two Naps Competition( one midweek, one on a Saturday), Last Man Standing Competition, Union Jack Competition and one based on a Snakes and Ladder board involving just one player a day which could last forever in theory and probably a few more I’ve forgotten for now or am still playing with. Also do picture competitions occasionally, not sure how many I can fit into a post at the moment as haven’t tried yet and a Grand National sweepstake thingy which was based on RacingTV’s version and the order they drew their horses out but they haven’t done one for a year or two so that one’s on the backburner.

I’m not sure what competitions Ryan has plans for and happy to work around those as to have two running would be counter productive and I can run any of these elsewhere if I choose to or if they have requested and I have gentlemans’ agreements as it were with people on various forums and Facebook groups not to clash.

Coming back to Ron’s post, there would appear to be a clash on most weekends and not sure if that’s what members want, if you wish to have a Saturday League competition I could do one no bother maybe based on the 4PP one which runs on various forums at once, I could contact the organiser of that as he didn’t run one this Winter and not sure what he’s planning in the future.

If any members aren’t aware by now I do not bet so running these competitions gives me an interest as Mrs DG and I do not get to go racing as much as we used to, even pre Covid plus I even get to enter them myself sometimes.

Incidentally, bearing in mind I’ve been around on racing forums for over twenty years I would like to ask Ron of his motives for suggesting a Saturday League and Virtual Betting facility here.

Anway any thoughts and/or suggestions or ideas would be good, whether positive or negative, and the choices are yours entirely, won’t take offence.

                      Amen.

Edit Also have a comp based on the 2021 Euros which is alternated with World Cups whereby points allocated depending how deep into the tournament countries reach multiplied by a weighting for each country.

Well I'll lead off anwering. I've known DG for a long time on racing forums, getting on towards 20 years at a guess Roger?, and I've always enjoyed joining in on these. I think the current competition is a great example of just how much time and effort goes into them for everyone's benefit.

I used to love the old League Of Neightions and the Ten To Follow most of all. I remember we had so many that wanted to play the former one year that Yorkshire finally got their own way and became a Country in its own right!

I'd most definitley be in the corner of supporting these. They're alot of fun, and a great way to have an interest without having a bet. And it's worth remembering just how selfless DG is with the time he puts in for all our enjoyment.

                          Hi DG
I have been a member of this forum for near on 7 years and introduced an annual match with the not606 forum. I only popped over around Cheltenham time as that was when this forum came alive and I introduced the match when there was very little in the way of competitions here. Clearly this forum has come a long way since then. My offers you refer to were simply to fill what I perceived to be a gap but I can now see that there really is no need for such as you have the whole year covered

I have therefore requested that my offers be removed as the last thing I want is to tread on any toes

Cheers and keep up the excellent work. Apologies for the intrusion

I'm surprised at the lack of comments here.

In my opinion, the compeitions offer something engaging and different, that people who are prolific posters can also get involved in.

                            I can't see the negatives.

Do people not share my enthusiasm here?

I like competitions. So would take part, though i'm pretty s**t at remembering to submit selections at times lol.

I'll have a look at the other sub forum now
