  • Tiger Roll could revert to hurdles after trainer Gordon Elliott decided against running his Randox Health Grand National hero at Cheltenham on Friday.

The diminutive chaser claimed his third Cheltenham Festival success in the Glenfarclas Cross Country Chase in March before winning the world’s most famous steeplechase at Aintree the following month.

He made a pleasing reappearance when fourth under a big weight in another cross-country race at Prestbury Park last month and was being lined up for a return to the course this week.

However, upon realising the race was another handicap – meaning Tiger Roll would have had to concede weight all round again – Elliott had a change of heart.

Speaking after saddling a winner at Cheltenham on Friday, Elliott said: “I thought it was a conditions race and I didn’t want him running off top weight again giving stones away.

“I’ll probably give him one more run over hurdles before March to open his windpipes up.
“Back here in March is his Gold Cup, all being well.”

    • Music to my ears Kev. Couple of cover bets but agree, didn't see anything yesterday to have me worried about TR.

      • Surprised no one's mentioned Auvergnat , who won the 3m PaddyPower chase today,
at Leopardstown by 6 lengths.Trained by Enda Bolger and owned by J.P Mcmanus.
Auvergnat is 12-1 for the Glenfarclas cross country Chase on the wednesday of the festival.

Never quite delivered in XC events for me, actually I’ll correct that because Auvergnat has a PP Hogan and Le Touche Cup to his name, but he’s never really delivered at Cheltenham.
Clearly a talented horse but only an exceptional horse can lower Tiger Rolls colours for me...

Can't be backing these shorties in races like this personally.

As Albert Einstein famously said.... The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. Especially at 12/1.

When Auvergnat was running clear today, my first thought wasn't the Cross Country, it was that he may be a better handicap chaser than I've ever considered before. Too late now of course

Transformed at home in head gear according to enda bolger. Was lazy during in his races.

I'd far rather back him at 12s than tiger roll at 3/1

"He travelled so sweet. Last week we put blinkers on him because he ran in a couple of hurdle races and ran terrible lazy.

“He was on fire everywhere today. Even though Donie (McInerney) lost his whip on the run-in he didn't need it.

                    • Anyone views on Don Poli?

Has a good festival record, right trainer and race changing more to National prep for some

On ratings if still in good shape, then would have BIG chance....albeit new to discipline

I think the opposite. Being nimble and having a turn of foot is very helpful in this race.

No mention of him running here at all though?

Don Poli had a sighter over the national fences, if he runs again it'll be soft ground at best and he'll be protecting our trying to lower his mark.

Won't won whatever race he runs in next and he's nothing like Tiger Roll as a horse (bar the owners and good course record)
