    • It seems a little odd that the majority of antepost punters appeared to have not done so well.
      In addition to the tipsters.

Especially when you consider that of the 19 graded races, I think around 15/16 were won by the Favourite or second favourite.
Over half the winners (16 I reckon) were less than 3-1 SP, which also makes it surprising.

Another thing that I think helped most ante post punters is Bob olinger being a lucky winner, I think looking back of some of the favs people didn't back Constitution hill was missed by many as about 24 hours after winning his maiden he was around 4 or 5/1, most people I think were against edwardstone in the arkle, lhomme presse missed by many as he was a late switcher then only became fav on the day, shishkin probably bust many bets for people aswell I'd imagine

        • Think GL had a little bit of bad luck with Tellmesonething girl and Ginto, but not great. As far DJ, he’s jus a bookmaker’s benefit.
But it’s an entertainment show, just hope people new to the art of betting realise that.

DJ just needs to get his tips on the show better. Aye he’s not a super judge, but he tipped Stattler at 20/1 for the NHC in the RP and banged on about Constitution Hill every bloody week but didn’t put him up. Also tipped Dysart at 16/1 for the Supreme in his stable tour piece which would’ve been a good tip too. Just needs to stop trying to think outside of the box in my view.

            • The Upping The Ante boys had to come up with 2 selections each and every Tuesday. Not easy to do, each and every week, but that's what they are contracted to do

A lot of high profile tipsters, particularly on the preview night circuit, keep trying to get the shorties beat. Sometimes that works. In an environment where you have 2 and a half dominant Irish trainers, there's a very strong argument that their horses, are so far ahead of British based horses - in the graded races. The handicapper this year was able to level the playing field in the handicaps. They can't do that for the graded races.

                • I really enjoyed the upping the ante series. Its great to have discussions on national hunt with a view to Cheltenham from an early stage. I think DJ is a great presenter and feel sorry for him that people are having a go at him for tipping up no winners. To be honest, I don't follow it for the tips myself and I suspect most people are of similar ilk.

I enjoy the discussion of performances and targets and the banter between the 2 lads and the build up. to the festival.

Tbh anyone who follows someone else's tips blind and does zero research themselves on whether the horses is value or is even likely to run deserves to lose.

The show is entertaining and tbf they did get a little unlucky which is part of the game and DJ did say hed be changing tactics slightly next year.

The people who follow the upping the ante tips would have their minds blown by the freely available knowledge and hard work on here.

                    • Maybe DJ should just stick to the presenting, he's good at that. It's an entertaining show and they both come across as genuine likeable blokes you'd be happy to share a couple of pints with. I still think they and other podcast media whore types are lurking around on this site.

                      • I actually think DJ is pretty decent at working out the handicaps.

                        • I like them both. They're excellent, and easily the best out there. We can all make out own minds up about what we back and what we don't based on whether we like the case or not.

DJ has to go on to bigger and better things at some point. He's absolutely made for mainstream TV. Very personably and engaging. If ITV have any sense they'll get him on and find a suitable place for him before he steps forward into the main job.

Gavin's analysis and reasoning is excellent. And together they make a very good Team, so perhaps taking a version of what they do together mainstream would be a next logical step.

I think the pressure to put up two horses every week is the problem, and perhaps a slight tweak in format would solve the tipping issue. They almost certainly have backed their nominated horses at bigger prices, but they are tied to the timing of the show and compelled to put up selections at lesser and often poor value prices. I think they'd be better putting up selections when it's the right time. A bit more like Lydia I guess.

                          • Yep it’s entertainment, none of us just would have two AP bets per week. We might put on ten in a week if we think we have seen enough evidence (races, trainer comments etc) and nothing for weeks.

I was saying to my mate only last week. ITV need somebody who comes more from the punting/analysis basis. Not a Chapman. Why does that man need to shout all the time?

Lynch would be a real plus to any coverage.

I would sum it up this way too , . To be fair to D.J , he went for the Bigger priced horses , most of the time , which he admitted was probably not the best tactic..
They might be better off to Only have 1 selection per episode .. Gavin one week , Dave the next ..

I think the fact that they showed the Question from the viewer - re Dave's choices . shows they Don't take themselves too seriously .
I hope they carry on again this year.
