  • Gavin looked to hate being interrupted as often as he was there. DJ is a much better host IMO, but christ his tipping is dreadful. He's Irish and the Irish look to have a firm grip on this game, yet he loves tipping large price British trained horses. In the current racing landscape, its simply the fast way to the poor house.

His bets look awful at this stage. He might not have a runner from all the ones he has put up so far

          • To be fair GL and DJ run just about the best podcast out there, and whilst their selections may feel a bit uninspiring it's essentially be because of the self-imposed need to put up winners. At this stage of the season there aren't many markets you can do where you're going to be putting up a 25/1 winner. And as each week goes on, the number of races you can put them up in is getting less because of previous selections. Plus most of us on here are working on the Festival from long range, and we're likely to already be on at bigger prices. These boys probably are too but they can't advise at prices from months ago.

Until the handicap entries come out it'll only get harder. GL and DJ should be given high praise for being able to entertain and engage the genuine racing fan whilst also providing first class analysis and punditry. They are generally well respected and listened to, and that's why they move markets. What the bookmakers do is hardly their fault, and I feel it's a bit unfair to knock them for it.

Lydia and Ruby are a really good listen for different reasons. Ruby gives us excellent insight from a jockey's perspective. He's not one to hang your hat on for tips, but the incredible information he shares allows us to consider it and apply it to what we do. Lydia I think is great anyway. She's one of the best informed racing journalists out there and I've got a lot of time for what she does and has to say. Again you wouldn't necessarily follow her tips, but she is very much worth listening to. Her Road To Cheltenham articles that were the pre-cursor to the podcast were pretty much the only resource of it's type when she kicked it off. She was the one that had the foresight to get it out there, and those articles were pretty much the analogue version of all the podcasts we see out there now.

Kev, Jono, and myself would probably be considered amateur hour by comparison to some of the available podcasts, but hopefully our brand of analysis and discussion offers something slightly different. We're finding our way at the moment, but we're trying to mix it up to keep it fresh, and we're avoiding the set format that most racing podcasts follow. That way we have more flexibility to roll with the season, and hopefully we can give some alternative views and more diverse selections on the way through. The other podcasts don't really get that same flexibility because of their formats, but they shouldn't be knocked for it, as they are far more professional in both their approach and formats than we are.

I really enjoy the show, and agree they deserve high praise for being able to entertain and engage. The tipping part of the show is not actually that long in relation to the rest, but I like how they discuss races, review events and generally discuss the game. Anyone who puts themselves out there deserves a huge amount of credit IMO, but with that, comes criticism too, which can be fair and unfair, just like anything in life.

Re tipping, I think the expectations on here are much much higher than the general expectations of the public, for obvious reasons. I like the format of the FJ podcast because you breakdown the market and analyse multiple runners to provide tipping context. Each to their own, podcasts can choose the formats they like, but I'm basically certain that if DJ spent the night before filming Upping The Ante podcast taking part in yours, then the the majority of his tips wouldn't see the light of day.

                you are so right.

Gavin and DJ put out the best, well informed, most entertaining podcast by a country mile.

I don't care much at all what they tip, its entertainment all the way.

You're right too on on when the handicap markets form, particularly at handicap entries and NRNB.

At that point they're on a level playing field as the rest of us, so any tips they make are at the same time we are backing our Fez handicap horses, and so their thoughts then will be an essential watch.

                • Thing is this forum just isn't the target audience of Upping the Ante.
There's just nothing that can really be added by the show that's not been covered on here.

For plenty though, not on this forum or keen to take a steer from others, i'm sure it's great.

GL, if he were a member on here would add plenty.
And DJ - he's the best host around. Listen to the Racehour Cheltenham previews for the last 2 years and that's where he excels.

Agreed totally here with regards Upping The Ante. The actual ‘tipping’ part of their weekly hour long podcasts is a few mins I don’t take much attention to, partly because I very much try to invest my money many months in advance of the National hunt season (inherent of risk, but I’m extremely happy with the ‘risk in relation to the reward’) but more pertinently, the bare truth is, we have little to no idea if the selections they are putting up are actually complicit with who they mitt actually be betting on themselves.

If they’re putting American Mike up a few weeks ago at 7’s (now half that price) but they’ve backed it at 20 & 25’s when it was introduced initially into the Champ Bumper market, then it makes their 7/1 ‘tip’ a little redundant - their ‘risk v reward’ (which is surely the ‘pure definition’ of gambling??) is very significantly less than what it might be to the public in listening and ‘taking heed’ of their advice.

Likewise, DJ for example might put up Blue Lord potentially next week at say 12 or 14’s - I’m just guessing - but it doesn’t mean to say that both Lynch & Jennings haven’t gambled big wedges on both Appreciate It & Ferny Hollow at very attractive prices months ago, pre festival this year, or whenever they felt they were ‘beating the market’ to win money on the Arkle Chase, and they either feel they’d look stupid and cliche’d putting up Mullin’s 2 big guns at silly short prices, or Bet365 have ‘suggested’ thst putting up Blue Lord at his price ‘might be a good idea’ - it’s fairly possible.

The show itself is a fantastic watch, and of course, the best one out there (they have the financial tools and expertise to allow it…), but the tipping section isn’t anything I tend to take advice on personally, but enjoy their views all the same.

Todays news had me pondering this again. No idea when the injury to AI occurred, but if it was a carry on from the injury that ruled him out of Punchestown, I wonder whether Gavin knew more. I am not suggesting that he did, but it was a brave tip at the time given that AI and FH might've been competing for a single starting place where Willie had already name checked AI for the race. And even if they did both line up, the threat of AI in the race itself was large.

Either way, looks a great bet now.

Imo, I'd say no. Think he took a guesstimate gamble and it's paid off.

(I hope) AI set back is only a recent thing, as many top figures/connections said his well being was good and all set to race over the Xmas period!

Thanks. I missed that. Odd to 'tip' a cover bet.
