  • Sorry just realised Echos of Rain, I am on Hook at 50/1 and when I read someone had a 50/1 ticket I added 2 + 2 = 5.

    Panic attack over....

            • It’s interesting that Hook Up is still favourite. I assume the yard must be very confident

Hard to be confident on the back of her run last year.

                • I'd think Royal Kahala fans should feel quite confident if Hook Up is the one to beat.

Royal Kahala has beaten Hook Up and Gauloise, and no blatent reason they'd turn the form around either.

I'm surprised she's running to be fair, but glad she is... I think it's wrong that she's not shorter than Hook Up on form.... how much you value with Willie factor depends on how good a bet you think she is.

                  • If Hook Up can iron out her hurdling, she’d certainly get closer to Royal Kalaha than last time. Whether that’s enough and whether Willie can do that, is another matter.

Not so sure, I still fancy Hook Up to reverse the form with RK for the reasons I set out after the DRF in the overall Yankee thread:

If you look at Hook Up's 3 races this season, she beat Gars De Sceaux by 12 lengths over 2 miles. She then lost to Royal Kahala by 5 lengths over 2m 2.5f and dropping back to 2m at the DRF she ran creditably to finish 4th only 7.5 lengths behind Appreciate It.

So why do I think Hook Up could reverse form with Royal Kahala ?

When Hook Up lost at Fairyhouse to RK, this was on RK's favoured Heavy ground, on a track she thrives on and over a longer trip than HU had previously raced. Also Hook Up was Favourite to beat RK and possibly would have done so had she not clattered the final flight. RK was giving HU 2lb which is pretty inconsequential.

At the DRF, Hook Up also made a number of jumping errors but still managed to finish in 4th place (running on st the end) behind the 1st and 3rd favourites for the Supreme.

The Cheltenham Novices Hurdle is run over 2m 1f, so a furlong less than when HU lost to RK and its unlikely to be on Heavy ground.

At Fairyhouse, Rosey's Hollow was receiving 4lb from Royal Kahala and 3lb from Gauloise, so slightly more than Hook-Up received.

Comparative ORs of the (then) Top 4 in the betting

                      # Hook Up 0 / 131 / 133 after DRF
                      # Gauloise 0 / 0 / 135 after Fairyhouse
                      # Royal Kahala 0 / 0 / 138 after Fairyhouse
                      # Rosey's Hollow 0 / 0 / 125 / 136 after Fairyhouse

In terms of the very limited trends accumulated after only 5 renewals of the Mares Novices Hurdle, Hook-up is 5 years old, trained by WM and owned by Susannah Ricci.

The main risk is probably whether or not Hook Ups jumping lets her down again when it matters. If not, she just might be too good for them.

I can't get out of my head though how bad she was in the Triumph. No way I could back her with any confidence. Not saying she can't put that behind her as clearly there are many examples of that but.......

There is no evidence at all that she might be too good for Royal Kahala.

The best is "if she didn't make a mistake at the last, she might have".....

To be fair, I thought Hook Up was best priced 4/1, but she's 11/2 and Royal Kahala 6/1

At those prices I can see why you'd forgive (and hope) for improved jumping and side with Willie at the festival...

However, I think Royal Kahala won on merit against Hook Up and would have beaten her regardless. A stiff 2m1f won't show Royal Kahala in a bad light either as we know she does get further so will stay the trip if well run.

She's also beaten Gauloise fairly when both beaten ....

Lots of people assumed Gauloise was Mullins number 1 before that run, and now have switched back to Hook Up.... I think it was Hook Up all along, and she's going to be in the mix..... but of the pair, I think Royal Kahala is the better horse so far.

Most people have Hook Up at a big price, so will want to see the upside (myself included) but I think it's a leap to say she's too good for them apart from the jumping letting her down.... for me it's the jumping AND she needs to improve to reach RK. Which could happen

Willie Mullins was impressed enough after RK beat Hook Up to say that she (RK) represented the best form in Ireland. Peter Fahey is of the opinion that she will act on better ground (to be proven) but there is no doubt the New Course will suit her and that the horse wasn't quite right last time out. All in all, I would be sticking with RK

                            • Santa Rossa out tomorrow

irishracing.com | Racecard Navan, Sat, 6th Mar, 2021, Racing Again March 13th Mares Maiden Hurdle

SANTA ROSSA hasn't been seen in over a year, but she has some very smart form to her name and sets the standard in this two mile contest. A winner of a Grade 2 bumper on her second start, she performed with credit when pitched in against top-class rivals at Aintree and Punchestown respectively. Her debut effort over flights at Fairyhouse was encouraging and despite the lengthy layoff, it will be disappointing if she fails to account for her eighteen rivals here. A beaten odds-on favourite on her two starts in Ireland, Manitopark Aa is given second preference. The form of her most recent effort has worked out well, with the first and third both winning since. Bumper victors Lady Heath (first time hood) and Dreamingandhoping are both capable of making their presence felt, while others of note are Cathmart Desjy and newcomer Bealnablath, who is a half-sister to smart stable companion Treacysenniscorthy.

Cheltenham might come too soon but has an entry and 40/1 NRNB taken.
