He ran the same at aintree to be fair, did all his best work late. Hardly would have been 100% revved up for today, i will reserve judgment for another day with alcala slipping up.

    • Then again I'd have given death duty atleast an 8. Thought It was a fine display.

      • Satisfactory performance I thought.

Shame Alcala slipped up, not totally sure what would have happened but Finians was definitely improving at the time.

        Arkle still on the agenda?

At least an 8? We must have been watching different races Billy

          • Hard to make a thorough assessment of Finian's Oscar today, debut over fences in public will no doubt come on a bundle for that, regardless of trip.

I do wonder of he may have been more fluent if he had gone from the front at pace, it seemed the slower and longer time he had to think about jumping a fence the more obvious his jumps were made to look.

Fine performance. Travelled well, got to pop a few fences in tight, and would have learned a hell of a lot from that race, Davy slowed him right down to pop the last in tight where he made a mistake, id rather he did that now and learn from it, he could have asked for a big one and gone on by 10 lengths on the bridle, he had plenty in the tank when davy realised ruby had slipped up the inside .
Inis mean (well beaten) was only a length behind land of hope and glory in a grade 3 on his previous start.
And cap d'aubois was bought for chasing and although not a star he's had plenty of schooling and I think time will tell he's useful.

I'm not a horseman but I always wonder about death dutys head carriage, and unseating,

I would be surprised if he ran in this now.

As a side note, the winners time broke the track record by ten seconds...

Nice. I think little things like that can often be overlooked or dismissed as it isn't an exact science

                    Given an RPR of 154.

Paddys and Betfair gone 40-1. Am I missing something?

                    • Petit Mouchoir out this week (Wednesday I think), hoping all goes to plan, seeing as he is my main Arkle hope, so far!

On a side note, the Tizzard stable tour mentioned Pingshou could still go Chasing, if that's the case I think Finian's Oscar goes JLT and Pingshou goes for this.

That's if he can't make an impression in the CH division isn't it .... so a Pingshou/Finians Oscar double could shorten dramatically.... although unlikely haha

That is true Kev, though, and it is only my opinion, but I can't see Pingshou troubling the CH division at all, which is why I feel he'll be chasing before long. Probably do the reverse of what Buveur D'air done, campaign as a hurdler all season then switch to chasing and win a big pot!!

                          • I've only just watched the Finian's Oscar race from the weekend.

It was a solid yet slightly underwelming debut over fences, similar to Death Duty who took a while to get going but improved as the race went on (just minus the mistake at the last that DD made). There was nothing in the race that really made me worry about his future over fences and his chances of winning much tougher races over fences but at the same time his jumping was far from want you want in an Arkle horse. He looked quite slow and I can't recall any jump where he made ground with his jumping. Purely on that run he struck me as much more of a staying chaser who jumps economically and uses little energy.

Again, like I said with Death Duty i'll be making much more of a judgement on his second run. A faster pace and more experience will hopefully change this view but having a preference for him to run in the Arkle, I'm sat here hoping it's more a case of Potts forcing the horse down the Arkle route and him having the class and talent to win than him looking like an Arkle horse or like that's the race that will suit him best.

The only other thing that may possibly have come into play is this was the first big horse that Cooper had to ride for the Potts and Tizzard and if anything went wrong it would have been THE worst start to their partnership. It could have been a case that Cooper was a tad nervous and just wanted the horse to get round and get that first win with no alarm bells. That is me just reading into something that may not have been there though

                            • I'd disagree with the comment that he didn't out jump any horse during the race. The 4th last alongside Aintree my Dream he out jumped him and was just a much much better horse.

When I read about the race I'd heard Alcala was miles clear and FO was struggling to pick them up... wathcing it back, FO got asked to close and so, really really easily. He had loads left in the tank.

I think he popped a few safely enough, corrected himself at a couple and didn't look like falling.

It'll take a pretty impressive round of jumping to make up for the bundles he has in hand over pretty much anything in the Arkle market bar Petit Mouchoir IMO.

I must have the rose tinted glasses on....

                                Not sure?

You tempted? I am actually really taken with that performance. You can assume that DDC was under-par but using The Unit as a yardstick, he was an alright little hurdler (ran in the race Pinshou won at the festival) and he has absolutely put him away....

Reminds me a little bit of the first time I watched Ar Mad?
