Hargam came under pressure early in the two-mile conditions’ hurdle at Kempton on Sunday, but he found lots for that pressure. A good jump at the final flight took him into the lead, and he kept on well up the run-in for Barry Geraghty to hold Court Minstrel by a neck. The pair of them came away from Mister Miyagi and the winning time was good, 0.11secs/furlong faster than standard. It was the fastest time by far of the day, and it was the only one to dip below standard.

After a really good juvenile season, which included a third place in the Triumph Hurdle, Hargam didn’t win last season, but young hurdlers often struggle during their four-to-five-year-old season. This was JP McManus’ horse’s first win since he won the Triumph Hurdle Trial at Musselburgh in February 2015. He can build on this now. Also, he kept finding for pressure over this sharp two miles, so he could improve for a greater stamina test. He has never gone beyond the minimum trip over hurdles, but he won on the flat over a mile and a half. He is by Sinndar out of a Galileo mare, so he is bred for stamina. His dam’s half-brother, Vahorimix, won the French Guineas, but her dam won a listed race at Deauville over an extended mile and a half. Hargam should improve for a switch back to a stiffer two miles, and he is well worth a try now over two and a half miles or further.

        • So Thistlecrack hopefully makes his chasing debut this Tuesday. I really really hope he can take to fences but i'll be on oddschecker at the ready if he does run. It won't be to put a bet on the Gold Cup (even though i'm already on) but any signs that chasing may not be his game and i'll be snapping up whatever is left of the 5/1 or even odds against for him in this race.

Haha Thistlecrack reverting back to hurdles is going to be an absolute game changer for my ante post... I can't imagine any bet without him in. I hope you don't get chance to put it on.

              • Colin Tizzard mentioned that Native River may return to hurdles after the Hennessey, with a world hurdle campaign in mind. I suppose it depends on how Thistlecrack takes to fences, and how he performs on Saturday. It'll be an odd decision if that's what they do.

                • Looks like a cracker kevloaf, decent card front to back to be fair.
Can't help thinking Saphir Du Rheu is the forgotten horse if Nichols sends the horse back over timber....

                  • The jumps really are back when you see fields like that!

Is the hurdle run for Native River only really to keep what is a very appealing mark intact for the Hennessy? If he had won a prep run over fences they may have lost that

Yeah certainly a bit forgotton, but probably because he was disappointing a few times after disappointing behind Thistlecrack. He never returned to his previous World Hurdle form ? Can't remember any excuses on the Nicholls open day, although I am sure there we're probably 10

That must be their thinking in the short term but it's strange that they are thinking of reverting to hurdles after the Hennessey.

Strange but now that Thistlecrack looks certain to go down the Gold Cup route Tizzard may just be thinking of shuffling his options at the festival perhaps. I know he mentioned that all three of Cue Card, Thistlecrack and Native River could likely take in the Gold Cup but I'd be shocked if he put his three stars in the same race. Hold NR back a year targeting the World Hurdle before going chasing again next year?

I don't agree with it as I'm never a fan of horses switching between hurdles and fences and NR has clearly proved himself to be high class over fences. A win in the Hennessy would surely leave him no choice too but it's the only thing I can think of if he seriously is considering hurdles for the season. Quite baffling really

                          • With Thistlecrack now almost certain to go for Gold, this opens up the race for me as a betting proposition and i'm happy to take a look now.

His price has clipped into 12's best price (general 10/1 shot) since i last checked when he was 16's and it could be likely due to the below quotes from Alan King today but Yanworth is of serious interest now

Last season was marvellous really. It went very well bar Cheltenham. Things didn't quite go to plan. He was probably beaten by a very good horse, but we lost a lot of ground on the home turn. He (Yorkhill) quickened away from us and we could never really cut it down."It took quite a lot out of him. It was the first proper race he had and that's why we didn't run him again.

I would not be at all surprised if he ended up being a World Hurdle prospect, but we will see. I think two miles on testing ground would be fine, but I'd be surprised if we come back - I think it will be two and a half and up.
Could we see a repeat of the the 2014 WH perhaps...

More of That under Barry Geraghty battling past the hot favourite Annie Power and Ruby Walsh with another JP horse in At Fishers Cross back in third...

                            see

Yanworth out staying Faugheen with Jezki picking up the third place...that's your trifecta right there

                            Comment

                            • I hadn't seen that quote jono. Yanworth is certainly very very interesting for this race. I did think he would go for the Champion Hurdle (but I also thought Apples Jade would go for the world hurdle) .... Luckily I had them in the same bet hahaha. I think that is my first dead duck... anyway, back to the point:

With this as a likely target it is hard to put a line through him. He was fairly good over 2 miles, improved incredibly for the step up and if we saw any sort of improvement again he'd be a worthy contender in this. Only Nichols Canyon in the betting that is shorter has this as a target at the moment and although I can't think of a form line between the two, I don't think its as much of a leap as the number of grade 1's NC has picked up suggests?

                              • You lasted longer than me then with Arctic Fire...all but lost that in September!

Yanworth must have travelled about 3miles after Geraghty rode him so wide throughout that Neptune run! Joking aside I can't get just how impressive he was on Trials day on horrible heavy ground over 2m4. I think the step up will bring improvement in him and don't worry about the step up in trip. It's easy to forget he was one of the 'bankers' at the festival after that run in January.

I do think there will be Ricci runner in this race, with Faugheen the most likeliest (over Annie or VVM). Not that that means Nichols Canyon won't win the race but i'd see it as a negative not having Ruby on board in the race. He's an interesting runner in this for sure. You'd be stupid to ignore a horse who has won that many grade ones.

If any of the Ricci runners were confirmed runners for this i'd be siding with them (VVM especially) but that's never going to be the case and having covered Faugheen in some multiples i'm happy to look elsewhere from that yard for now, and Yanworth probably takes my fancy this far out as one of the most likeliest to run
