    Supreme

Min is the horse everyone is talking about, but I wonder about his style of race. He’s very keen and he could get lit up by the occasion. He might not enjoy getting hassle up front either. There’s good chat for Yorkhill but Altior was very impressive in Kempton. He was a good bumper horse last year, his work was very good and he’s grown into himself. With good ground and a fast pace Altior can oppose Min and upset the odds.’

    Arkle

‘Douvan is very hard to get away from. He’s very good over fences and is a very good hurdle as well. He’d have a great shout if he ran in the Champion Hurdle. He jumps well, he’s very measured and calculated and doesn’t take risks. He’s forward-going, has scope and oozes class. Douvan is absolutely impossible to oppose.’

    Champion Hurdle

‘My Tent Or Yours has missed two years and it’s far from an ideal preparation. He’s been to Kempton twice and worked there, but you’d love to have had a run. He has proven his class in the past, and if he retains that ability he has a chance in an open race. This is a step up for Annie Power despite the fact she’s won the Hattons Grace. Nichols Canyon and Identity Thief are proven, while The New One has a massive chance if he runs to his best form.
‘It wouldn’t surprise me if My Tent Or Yours won the race, but we’re all heading into the unknown.’

    RSA

‘No More Heroes has been very impressive in everything he’s done, but so has More Of That. He’s won a World Hurdle beating Annie Power so that’s a good level of form and both his chases have been in Cheltenham. It would have been good to get another run into him but he schooled nicely in Newbury last week so that covers that base. He seems in good shape and he looks well at home.
‘He hasn’t run since December but both his runs this season have been at Cheltenham and that’s probably the trickiest track in England so he was good and accurate in his jumping. He has lovely course form and will go well again.
‘No More Heroes who is no pushover, but I’m confident.’

    Champion Chase

‘Un De Sceaux is the one they have to beat but I don’t know if that is a true reflection of the race. SprinterSacre is in great shape at home and has got back to winning ways at Kempton. NickyHenderson is a great man to get them ready and if Sprinter Sacre could return to within a stone of his best form, that would give Un De Sceaux something to do. He’s in far better shape than this time last year.’
‘SpecialTiara could makes things complicated for Un De Sceaux at the front and run a fast pace on drying ground. It could leave Un De Sceaux vulnerable at the bottom of the hill. There are no hiding places in this race. Sprinter Sacre is a superstar and Special Tiara is fantastic – These are the ones to trouble Un De Sceaux.’

    Neptune

‘Yanworth is four from four over hurdles and continues to improve with each run. He’s a winner around Cheltenham as well and that was on soft ground over 2m 4f so stamina shouldn’t be an issue, and he should prefer better ground. He’s probably my best chance of the entire week.’
‘He has improved a lot since finishing fourth in the Bumper at the Festival last year on nice ground, and he’s got a fantastic shout. Long Dog will appreciate better ground and a step up in trip, but Yanworth is a deserving favourite.’

    World Hurdle

‘He’d be an even shorter price if he was from a fashionable yard. His form is rock solid and his last performance at Cheltenham was really eye-opening. He’s beaten the best of them and beaten them well. There’s nothing to oppose him. Thistlecrack is head and shoulders above the rest of this field. He’s a good thing.’

    Triumph

‘Ivanovich Gorbatov was very disappointing, but the ground was soft so we’re hoping that was the reason the edge was taken off him. We were very sweet on Ivanovich after his first win at Christmas when he beat LetsDance in impressive fashion, but it does throw in an element of doubt when you see a horse getting turned over like that. Hopefully we’ll get better ground.’
‘The way Lets Dance came home after being headed last time out was impressive . Cheltenham is a stiff track and a fast pace will suit Lets Dance. It could all pay to her strengths and she could be the each-way value at 12/1.’

    Gold Cup

‘You can forgive Don Cossack the fall at Kempton at Christmas, because the track was probably a little sharp for him. He was entitled to jump rusty next time out at Thurles, and then he schooled brilliantly after racing at Leopardstown so that should remove any doubts about his jumping. Cheltenham should suit him a lot better than Kempton so he’s a worthy favourite.’
‘You have to have doubts about Vatour’s ability to get the trip the way he got collared in the King George at Kempton. This is 3m 2f around Cheltenham and you see a lot of horses getting found out.’
‘Djakadam is a horse I loved last year. I loved him when he tipped up in the JLT, he travelled so well two years ago in that. He was as big as a bull in the Hennessey when he disappointed, then he was still big as a bull when he won the Thyestes. He was second in the Gold Cup as a six-year-old which is a great run and then you can forgive his run at Punchestown. He’s a massive player.’
‘You could run the race five times and get five different results, but Djakadam is my pick for the big one.’

          • Annie Power the big pick at local Cheltenham preview night

As always, there was a fine crowd at The Salthill Hotel on Monday night for the annual Cheltenham preview event, which was this year sponsored by Paddy Power, with all proceeds in aid of Barney Curley's charity Direct Aid for Africa.

BY CAROLINE WHELAN Galway Advertiser, Thu, Mar 10, 2016

As always, there was a fine crowd at The Salthill Hotel on Monday night for the annual Cheltenham preview event, which was this year sponsored by Paddy Power, with all proceeds in aid of Barney Curley's charity Direct Aid for Africa.

There is so much information bandied about at these types of events that one needs to take it with a pinch of salt, but there was no doubt it was an entertaining night for all who attended. The panel consisted of jockey Davy Russell, amateur jockey and assistant trainer Patrick Mullins, local tipster George McDonagh, and The Racing Post's Paul Kealy, whose colleague Johnathan Mullin was asking the questions. There was banter aplenty, especially from Russell, who is never afraid to speak his mind. The jockey said Paddy Power had saved so much money following the fall of hotpot Annie Power in last year's Mares' Hurdle that the least he could do was buy a round of drink for the house. The affable bookmaker took the bait and duly obliged to a rapturous round of applause. It is fair to say, he will always be welcomed back to Galway.

Now to the serious business of punting, and what will make us some money at Cheltenham? Firstly to the Supreme Novice and Patrick Mullins, whose stable holds an embarrassment of riches heading across the water, was very much in the Min wins camp. "His two wins have been nothing short of exceptional. His form looks rock solid. I have not seen anything that looks as good. I think on what he has shown, he looks a winner." There has been talk of the 6/4 favourite being a buzzy type which may boil over at Cheltenham, this did not seem an issue for Mullins. He has been keen but that has not stopped him. The fast pace at Cheltenham should help him settle." The Racing Post's Paul Kealy put up English hope Altior, saying he was a 'very, very fast horse' and believed the two should be closer in price. Davy Russell has been impressed by Gigginstown runner Tombstone. "I like him, he'll improve for better ground. Gordan (Elliott ) has his horses in serious order, he looks a bit of value."

Regarding the middle distance novice hurdle, the Neptune, Paul Kealy said the level of form shown by favourite Yanworth was 'ridiculously good'. "He ran to a rating of 160 the last day - you don't see that level of form outside of the Festival itself. I just hope he didn't leave the race behind him that day but I have a feeling that Yanworth is different class. Patrick Mullins gave a shout to A Toi Phil as possibly being the yard's best chance as he is working very well. "There could be further improvement in him. Bellshill's form the last day was too bad to be true. He is working very well again and being by King's Theatre will be better on good ground. Long Dog is made for the Neptune, he has done very little wrong." Davy Russell recommended the crowd to back Yorkhill as he 'adores' this horse, which "ticks every box to win a Neptune. He's tough and has done everything right." However it appears Yorkhill may be taking the Supreme route. Patrick Mullins noting that 'wherever he turns up he must be taken seriously, he has a huge amount of ability.'

Gangster; the horse to back outside of the yard's big name favourites

In the long distance novice, the Albert Bartlett, Mullins appeared very sweet on Gangster. "He is working very well and has caught my eye a few times. He is a half brother to Rite of Passage so is very well bred. I think because he started off in the summer, he has not attracted as much attention as some of ours."

The Arkle was an open and closed job, with everyone in staunch agreement that the monster that is Douvan is unbeatable. Paul Kealy nominated Sizing John as a good bet without the favourite - he is 7/2 to win or come second to Douvan.

Moving on to the RSA, the race was seen as a clear match between No More Heros and More of That and the big debate being whcih would prevail. The former described as 'a false Irish banker' by Paddy Power who believes More of That is simply a better horse. Patrick Mullins professed himself to be a big No More Heros fan. "I think he's a fantastic jumper, he was unlucky not to win the Albert Bartlett last year." Davy Russell was off the same view. "He is my idea of a future Gold Cup winner. I have adored him since he was a youngster, he has always been a class horse."

The Champion Hurdle was very clear cut for the panel who believe Ladies Day will come 24 hours early with Annie Power the clear pick. Patrick Mullins said the stable was very lucky to be able to call her up to fill the breach, following the defection of both Faugheen and Arctic Fire. "She has not had the ideal preparation, she could have had more experience this year running at speed over hurdles, but I think she is more than capable of doing it." He said Nichols Canyon's run against Identity Thief at Christmas meant they could not be split, so by process of elimination that left Annie Power as the winner. Davy Russell was also very confident in the mare's ability, believing she would win. "She makes bits of anything she runs against."

The Champion Chase is also geared up to be another Mullin's payday with nothing being put forward as any real danger to Un De Sceux. Paul Kealy thinks the field will be 'blown away' by the favourite. George McDonagh described him as 'a stone wall certainty'. Patrick Mullins alluded to jumping concerns; "He has fallen twice, both times it has been his first run of the season, when he has been very fresh and has basically just been a bit of an eejit. He was settling much better in his races at the end of last year. It looks like it's his for the taking."

In the third of the big four, the Stayers Hurdle, Thistlecrack was described by Paul Kealy as being bombproof. "He has improved out of all recognition, and has slaughtered everything he met this season. I can not see what is going to beat him. Davy Russell said it was very hard to fault the favourite and he was "actually value at 6/5."

Lots of opinions but no conclusive answer

And so to the big one; The Gold Cup. There seemed to be a consensus among the panel that it was hard to split the top five in the betting - as there was a case for and against them all. It now appears that Vautour will run here, and Mullins says the key people in the yard think he will stay the longer trip. He is expecting an improved showing from his King George second, pointing out Vautour is a better horse going left-handed, and that the Mullins' horses are never set to peak at Christmas. There was murmurings that Vautour's work had been poor - and interestingly it was pointed out that Gangster had beat him eight lengths in a recent piece of work. Patrick Mullins appeared unconcerned. "Vautour is never a particularly good work horse, his work this year would be no different to what it was last year, and the performance he put up then was extra-ordinary." D'jackadam, he said, was a fantastic jumper and there would be little between them. Paul Kealy believed Don Poli was a lay. "These are very, very good horses he is running against, I can't see how he will make the amount of improvement he needs to make to get near these horses." Davy Russell, who will ride whichever of the Don's not ridden by Brian Cooper, said it was fiercely competitive and he would be just glad to have a ride in the race. He said Ruby believes Vautour will stay the trip, and the man's opinion must be respected as he knows what it takes to win a Gold Cup, but he personally does not think the horse will stay. The debate went on and on, but nobody seemed to have a conclusive answer about which horse would emerge as the winner.

The panel's charity bets were to be worth €100, but again following much ribbing from Russell to stump up more for charity, the amount was doubled by a patient Paddy Power. The bets were as follows; Patrick Mullins; €200 win Annie Power, Champion Hurdle. George McDonagh; €200 win Don Cossack, Gold Cup. Davy Russell; €200 win double; Limini in the Mare's Novice Hurdle, and Vroom Vroom Mag in the Mare's Hurdle. Paddy Power; €200 win Native River in the four miler. Jonathan Mullin; €200 win; Our Kaempfer in the Pertemps. Paul Kealy; €200 win Fingal Bay - in whichever Handicap Chase he runs.

Event organiser Barney Curley spoke and was also allowed a bet in aid of his own charity. The legendary punter nominated a €200 double on Annie Power and Thistlecrack.

                          my own answer

WHAT were your whereabouts on the morning of Tuesday, March 1, or possibly the evening of Friday, March 4? Were you at Punchestown racecourse and could you have possibly seen a Gangster batter and bruise a poor innocent victim who is currently vying for favouritism in the Timico Cheltenham Gold Cup?

Some eyewitnesses issued statements soon afterwards on betting slips and Davy Russell thinks he has solved the crime.

“There was talk coming in from a piece of work at Punchestown that Gangster had blitzed Vautour,” reveals Russell, prompting gasps from the intrigued crowd of around 650. “I was only schooling a few pointers but the horse I saw getting on the horsebox looked a lot like Vautour.”
Was it Vautour, Ruby? “I was in London, you needn’t bother asking me.” The banter has begun. Russell would stir up a squabble in a science seminar and he splits open plenty of atoms during the three-hour debate, which is overseen by Jonathan Mullin.

A crystal-clear phone call to Willie Mullins warms everyone up and the host from the Racing Post manages to get quite a bit out of him.
To sum up the call in a few sentences: Un De Sceaux is bouncing; Augusta Kate runs in the Champion Bumper but shows nothing at home; Vautour’s work has improved this week; Djakadam is where he wants him to be; Douvan is delicious. He doesn’t put anyone off backing Gangster and gives Bello Conti a favourable mention too. Blazer and Great Field are his best chances of winning one of the handicaps.

Mullins has nothing bad to say about Min and neither does Walsh.
“Min worked really well yesterday and his schooling went well last week too,” says Walsh. “He is a bit brave and he likes to attack his hurdles.”

The Post’s betting editor Paul Kealy is really keen on Altior, while Russell, who rides Silver Concorde, says he would be shocked if Tombstone was not right in the mix at the business end of the Supreme.

All the novice hurdles are dealt with first. Kealy points out that the Racing Post Rating of 161 given to Yanworth in January would be good enough to win 27 of the last 29 Neptunes. Barry Geraghty can’t find any flaws in him either but the biggest stumbling block could come from Yorkill. That is, of course, if he runs on Wednesday instead of Tuesday.

Mullin has read our minds. “Where would you like Yorkhill to go, Ruby? Supreme or Neptune?” Don’t get too excited – Walsh doesn’t bite. “What’s the point in speaking hypothetically? I don’t have the choice.”

There is absolutely nothing hypothetical when it comes to Douvan, who gets the thumbs-up for everyone.
“We love Douvan. I think he has everything,” says Walsh. Geraghty believes Douvan is different class, as does Jessica Harrington, while Paddy Power says his firm won’t be taking him on because he is so short and he’ll win, so it’s pointless.

Walsh believes there is a good thing in the RSA Chase. “I really fancy More Of That. He beat Annie Power. No More Heroes was unlucky behind Milsean and Martello Tower. I don’t know how you can be unlucky behind those two.”

Geraghty reports all to be well with the former World Hurdle winner. “He jumped six fences at Newbury last weekend – he jumped well and felt really well.”
Kealy offers the counter argument and says that No More Heroes’ jumping is “out of this world”.

Walsh reveals he will ‘probably’ ride Annie Power in the Champion Hurdle and says it would be one of the greatest training feats of all time if My Tent Or Yours makes a winning comeback there. Kealy makes a case for Sempre Medici, while The New One also gets a favourable mention.
Russell is having none of it. “I think you are all mad, making cases for Sempre Medici and this and that, and I’ll swing off the chandelier if Lil Rockerfeller wins it. The best horse in the race is Annie Power. She is a hell of a good mare.”

It is all about Un De Sceaux in the Betway Champion Chase with Walsh saying he is his best ride in any of the championship races. The panel can’t really find any cracks in Thistlecrack. Geraghty thinks he is the best banker of all the bankers and Paddy Power says he will go off odds-on.
After Russell proves himself to be an efficient auctioneer and manages to get a four-figure sum for a set of signed JP McManus silks, he reveals that no call has come from Michael O’Leary about the possibility of riding Don Cossack in the Gold Cup. Walsh says he keeps changing his mind about who he will ride as each day passes. Geraghty thinks Don Poli has the weakest claims of the leading contenders and Harrington opts for Djakadam. All agree that it it a fascinating Gold Cup.

                          • I remember a couple of years ago when Barry G gave More of That / Jezki in a 100 ew double, both at 10s, of course i never had a shekel on.
Fiver ew double this year, just in case he pulls it off again

I remember that - the IJF had a windfall.

What races had Russell got his treble in.

Phil Smith says of the Supreme: "It's a corking race!" "A high 150s horse needed to win"
Claude Charlet says: "Min finishes fourth" #LRC
Phil Smith says Seven Barrows asked the BHA to put on some jumpers bumpers.

The vibes from our panel are that Sprinter Sacre is working the house down. Getting back to scary Sacre by the sounds. #LRC

Lydia Hislop doesn't think More Of That jumps well enough.
Phil Smith has No More Heroes 5lb (I think?) clear of More Of That. Doesn't sound convinced by him. Is very sweet on No More Heroes.

Claude Charlet's banker of the meeting is Yanworth. #LRC

Phil Smith says he is "gobsmacked that Road To Riches is being considered for the Ryanair. His Gold Cup form is extremely solid". #LRC
The panel finding it hard to warm to the Ryanair. Lydia Hislop says this is why we shouldn't have a 2.5m hurdle race at the Festival.
Phil Smith holds hands up about Coneygree last year when he said connections must go to RSA. Congratulates them. Says he'd win this year.
Claude Charlet says Don Cossack runs like he's got a problem. "He's not happy when he runs".

Panel bankers include: Thistlecrack Thistlecrack Yanworth Smart Talk (in novice race)

Phil Smith finishes his piece by saying: "Where ever Bleu Et Rouge runs next, he wins" Fighting talk. Love it.

                                alternative timeline

Supreme: overwhelming majority for Altior. Phil Smith Yorkhill because highest rated.

CH Lydia said if had to have a bet now would go for P&Co. Has had breathing op. French chap liked Camping Ground unsurprisingly.

Mares/Mares Novice, Smart Talk a seriously good mare and the value in both markets (think that was Lydia).
Neptune - Yanworth obs. Phil Smith threw up some interesting stat in support of the form that I've forgotten, but it's by the by as Yan wins

Ryanair - Phil Smith defended need for this race and JLT. Suggestion from others that it's a shit race. Phil Smith - Garde La Vic too short
Soz GLV was JLT. In Ryanair PSmith cant undrstand sending RTR here. Mention for AF. Earlier Lydia suggestd this might be better race for VVM

World Hurdle - Phil Smith suggested Kilcooley could be the value

Triumph - general thought that Gorbatov a silly price. Protek Des Flos touted as good NRNB bet. French chap not that keen on Zubayr.

Triumph - Phil smith mentioned Connetables form v solid

Arkle - Lydia thinks Zamdy Man in the w/o market is a great value bet

Cross Country - French chap suggesting Utah De La Coquais a generous price if going is soft. Currently 40s.

Phil Smith stated Bleu et Rouge is a serious horse and should be backed next time out wherever that is.
