  • 2016 World Hurdle

    Early one from the Donn

    Windsor Park

Windsor Park is a bit obvious, but there was an awful lot to like about the performance that he put up in winning the Neptune Hurdle, and he could be destined for the very top now.

The main worry about Dermot Weld’s horse in the context of the Neptune Hurdle centred on his jumping. It had not been fluent in the Deloitte Hurdle at Leopardstown on his last run before Cheltenham. As against that, he had finished second behind Nichols Canyon in the Deloitte, despite the fact that he did not jump at all well. So, the theory went, if he could improve his jumping on the better ground, he would be a big player in the Neptune.

That is exactly what happened. He improved his jumping, probably helped by the good ground, and he was a big player. In truth, he actually dominated the race. Handy from early, Davy Russell sent him into a clear lead at the second last flight, and from there it never looked like he was going to be beaten. He came away up the run-in like a top class hurdler, putting almost four lengths between himself and his closest pursuer by the time he reached the winning line.

The Neptune is often a good pointer to the following year’s Champion Hurdle – ref. Istabraq, Hardy Eustace, Faugheen – but Windsor Park shapes more like a stayer than a two-mile hurdler. Indeed, the Albert Bartlett Hurdle over three miles, not the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle over two, was his other potential Cheltenham target as well as the Neptune.

The Galileo gelding is also a potentially classy stayer on the flat. He is two for two on the level, both wins gained over a mile and six furlongs last autumn, both at odds-on, and it is not beyond the bounds of possibility that he could be a Royal Ascot horse, even an Ascot Gold Cup horse. With that in mind, he is a classy recruit to hurdles. He has raced just four times over hurdles, and he has improved for each run. He is not finished improving yet, and he could be a classy staying hurdler for next season, if he continues down the hurdling route, in a division that lacks a real star for now.

Whisper and Cole Harden were well clear of rest on Saturday not that either are an AP bet for me right now.

Willie Mullins continued his clean sweep in the Punchestown Festival Grade 1s when Killultagh Vic held off the Colin Tizzard-trained Thistlecrack by half a length to take the Irish Daily Mirror Novice Hurdle.

The 8/1 shot, partnered by Paul Townend, fared better than stablemate Shaneshill, who was sent off 11/8 favourite and finished third.

"Killultagh Vic has improved since Cheltenham," said Mullins. "He's a good stayer and I'm not sure if we'll stick to hurdling or go over fences next season. The plan had been to go chasing but we'll look at what's around for the staying hurdles and then decide. Paul was fantastic, he kept his mount asleep and used Ruby (Walsh on Shaneshill) as his lead horse!

"I don't know if Shaneshill didn't stay or he was feeling the effects of Cheltenham. He appeared to stop so we'll have to see if a reason emerges."

Townend added: "Killultagh Vic dug really deep for me. I thought off the bend that I might win well but I missed the last and landed a bit flat-footed.

"The firepower down there [Willie Mullins'], they have so many runners in these races. They are second strings because Ruby [Walsh] is not riding them, but with any other trainer they would be first strings."

McCoy said More of that goes chasing but would find it hard to put a line through many others here. Jezki will probably disappoint early season and drift so - wait and see how market develops.

I think the stable tours are going to move this market before we ever see a significant trial. There are a lot of these who could go chasing ...im guessing windsor park jezki and cole harden stay hurdling but not sure about many others.

                taken from sporting life:

                Jezki out for the season

The seven-year-old found old foe Hurricane Fly too strong on his first three starts of last season, but ended the campaign on a high by landing the Aintree Hurdle and the World Series Hurdle on his first start over three miles at Punchestown.

Jessica Harrington's stable star was the ante-post favourite for the World Hurdle at Cheltenham next March, but is now set for a lengthy period on the sidelines.

Harrington said: "Unfortunately he's out for the season.

"He came back into training in the second week of August and we found he had some heat in his leg yesterday (Thursday) morning.

"It's hard to stomach, but it's one of those things."

you would have to think with this week looking field annie power would have to come into the reckoning massively if fit and trained for the race, she would be head and shoulders above the field, only horse that i liked last year was whisper trained by henderson but remains to be seen if he stays hurdling or goes chasing

                          Yep, agreed.
Leaves Mullins to win the Mares hurdle with Glens Melody again !

Whisper beaten a long way in the race last year though had interrupted preparation so could be a runner

Glens Melody is retired and AP has never won at Chelt so they won't risk tasting defeat in another World Hurdle. She'll either be sent chasing and aim for the new mares Chase race at the festival or she'll target the Mares Hurdle.

Oceans - There's no mares Chase. They've introduced a mares novice hurdle.

I just can't see them running Annie Power in anything but the mares race as they'll be desperate for her to win a race at the festival, and it'll be a penalty kick!
