  • GRAHAM WYLIE'S FIVE CHELTENHAM HORSES TO FOLLOW

    SHANESHILL

(Supreme Novices’ Hurdle, Tuesday March 10, 12-1)

“He hasn’t been out since he came second at Navan in December because he had a setback. Willie says he’s hoping to get him to Cheltenham for us, and he’s getting there.

“He’s not there yet, but he’s getting there and if he lines up it’ll be in the Supreme and he’ll have a decent chance. Willie obviously has Douvan in the race as well, and some people are saying the Supreme is not the right race for him, but Willie is adamant that it is. Hopefully, his stamina will come into play.”

Cardinal Walter was giving weight that day. Clipped in a few places. Best NRNB price for Qewy is 14s with billies.

Does pay a big compliment to Qewy the way he rocketed away on the run to the last at Newbury.

I have read on a few preview evenings that Douvan is better value than some of these other short priced favourites because he is an absolute machine but to me this is a prime example of why the supreme isn't a great race for favourites because there are at least half a dozen other horses that are unexposed and could be very good as well.

The right race for Shaneshill or the right race for Willie?

I thought Jim McGrath at Waterford was against the flow said something about Douvan on form not being within 7lb of Lami Serge at the moment.

Ye I read that, at the mo Douvan is very much about the visual impression in his races, rather than what he's beaten, but he can only beat what's put up against him and he's done it swinging on the bit, so he could be a 180 horse in a novice hurdle if the vibes are correct. Similar comments would apply to Faugheen, and they applied to UDS, prior to him destroying two highly thought of individuals

Agreed. You could say also Willie should know where he is from his homework bit that didn't eorth out with Avisio Ville.

Yes exactly hype. The point being they came with two genuine superstars last year and they duly obliged. Faugheen had beaten Josses Hill 26l in a bumper and Vautour had beaten a genuine grade one novice hurdler in a grade one and was a 4/1 shot going into Cheltenham so you had more of a handle on how good they were.

However if you look back to the previous year Pont Alexandre was the best thing since sliced bread, he'll improve for better ground etc and he got knowhere near. The point is there is a lot of guesswork involved for a 7/4 shot whereas you have a much better idea of the ability of UDS, Faugheen and Annie Power going into their assignments.

                        Yes, great point.

                        • I do think 'Tell Us More' is going to turn up in the Supreme. At the various previews I've read:
                          - Cooper is defo riding Outlander in the Neptune
                          - Cooper thinks Tell us More would be best suited by the Supreme
                          - O'Leary will always have final say over Willie
                          - Gigginstown have nowt else for the race
                          - The horse is pleasing again at home
                          - Cooper says he's more looking forward to riding Tell us More than Outlander

I know it's still an if but given the above I'm happy to take a chance e/w at 25s wiv Coral.

                          • I'd go to thr NRNB firms cashew, ive got the feeling Mullins will persuade the giggy team not to take on Douvan. This isnt the same as the Don Poli situation as the Don has an equal chance in both RSA and the 4 miler.Mullins team think Tell Us More in top 3 novices in yard and I'll be stunned if he runs against Douvan who is regarded as the best.

Yours is defo the sensible option but given cooper has committed to riding outlander in the Neptune I'm happy to risk being wrong ! (Won't be the first time ) - As you say it's rated one of Mullins best and I can't see Cooper missing out on that so, unless it's not going to the Fez, it has to be the Supreme.

                              • This is an old quote

“We will see. Tell Us More is possibly a Neptune horse or maybe an Albert Bartlett horse. A lot will depend on what they do over Christmas and just after. We’ll enter them in every race and nearer the day we’ll sort them out.”

Outlander to AB and TUM to Neptune would suit me bets.
