Agreed LR, I think it's a good idea to take on board what PN says, even if you don't act on it he always gives me the impression he tries to be honest with his assessments of his horses, and realistic, so if he's bullish there's usually good reason

Well Lac Fontana was a big fancy in 2013 and did not perform in the Triumph. Then the following year he was also fancied and ended up winning the County Hurdle beating Arctic Fire, who I thought got blind sided and should have won. So I wouldn't take PN's quotes lightly coming up to Chelts.

        • Yep I agree Mayo, I also think SW is a slogger and doesn't have that extra kick home. Whether the Chelt track suits him good I don't know.

A fair point. I always approach trainers comments with caution. They have to be careful not to upset owners. Jockeys making choices always do a lot of it too. It was a tough decision blah blah.

            • I think following his win in the Welsh national Synchronise was regarded as a slogger, but given the attritional nature of some gold cups it can be that extra staying power that wins the day, class doesn't always win that particular race, not saying I fancy SW but I don't take PN's comments as lightly as I used to

II agree MMG, though in that case I think SC main dangers are RTR and CL.

Has anyone noticed PP have gone 7/1 on Hollywell?

That's really short, they must have seen some serious money for him, are they gambling owners does anyone know, or maybe stable cash, it's certainly a gambling stable

Will AP be on board CL?

Paddy Power go 8/11 Carlingford 1/1 Holywell. I know it's his last season but I can't believe he can get off a horse that won the Irish Hennessy last time out. Richie McLernon a very able deputy for Holywell.

Whichever he chooses to ride will get smashed on the day of the race. I think JP will allow him to choose his horse this time.

Yes I agree. I'd have thought JP would want him on his but it wouldn't surprise me if your right and he lets him choose. It would be a very tough decision because they are similar types in their jumping can be a bit of a mixed back but both very strong stayers.

                          • It has happened before - AP rode TDS rather than Uxizandre in JLT last year.

That looked like another wrong pick for a while too.

I remember reading a blog with AP saying that Moreofthat might go chasing this year becuase he would love another Gold Cup before he retires... I supose JP might let him choose but would mean more to ride the winner in green and gold.

                              • Boston Bob: I was a little bit disappointed with him in the Hennessy but I imagine he'll go for the Gold Cup. It does look an open race.

Djakadam: He was very very good last time. It was a performance that certainly made us look at the Gold Cup and that's the plan. He handled the track until he got one fence wrong at the Festival last season. I don't think his jumping is an issue. He got round Newbury okay and Gowran is a fair test for any horse. Ruby said he'd never gone as easy in the Thyestes and to me that was a Gold Cup performance.

On His Own: He’s another intended runner in the Gold Cup. Last year’s winner could win it again the way it is looking this year and he was certainly nearly good enough then. He jumps a bit to his right which is not good but he has so much stamina that it doesn’t matter so much that he gives away a little bit of ground.
