  • Might be a stupid question but had a mare/ filly ever won the Triumph ?

While I am at it when does a filly become a mare ?

I was listening to Emmett Blake's podcast last week, and they were all very sweet on this horse for the race it won on Sunday.

Can't believe it was tipped here, as well as by all those guys, and I didn't think to chuck something on it for the Triumph...

Great stuff for all you guys here, who have beaten Pricewise to the punch by a stretch!

In racehorses a female horse is a mare over four years old, not sure if one has ever won the triumph though,

Thanks. Must be a line somewhere about all fillies becoming mares...

          • Surley Mullins and Co can't win all the graded hurdle races!

            • Has anyone mentioned Karezak for this? I have a contact who rears his head every so often with info and i've had an email today advising a bet on this horse for the Triumph and I know nothing about him, around 20/1, just wondering if anyone is read up on him, or has heard anything.

A few bits in Waynes column

                Before Peace & Co

I start the day on Karezak in the JCB Triumph Hurdle Trial and he has been very consistent all season in against some of the best of his age group.

He ran another very solid race at Chepstow last time in a Grade 1 where he came up against a decent horse in Bristol De Mai and has been very well and in good order since then back at home.

He wears the blinkers again and they seem to have ironed out the problem of him hanging to his left so this will be another good piece of experience for him hopefully on the way to the Cheltenham Festival.

                After Peace & Co

It was another very solid run from Karezak in the Triumph Hurdle Trial at Cheltenham in second behind Peace And Co, who looks very smart so he lost nothing in defeat.

The blinkers have definitely helped him on his last couple of starts and he is a good solid juvenile. He will have a freshen up now and then head straight to Cheltenham for the Triumph.

I think that race will suit him as will better ground as he has only been racing on the mud this winter. A strong gallop will carry him along in a fast-run race and with stamina on his side, the way the Triumph is run will be better than he has had so far.

He has followed all the good ones home who are short in the betting for the race and I think that Karezak at the moment looks overpriced.

                • Thanks for that OV, he sounds quite interesting doesn't he. I might try to get a cheeky bet on him by doubling him up each way with Rajdhani Express tomoz, would be a nice place pick up with both 20/1.

                  • Karezak definitely the type who could run into a place In Cheltenham.

                    • I've just stuck that double on, ew, 18 on RE and 20's on Karezak, not bad, place pays around 33/1, win just under 400/1, going for the place really, if RE is second tomorrow I can then think about a few quid to win on Karezak with the place taken care of, big if at this stage of course.

                      • RE not running now so that leaves me with a near pointless bet on Karezak, will have to rethink that one

                        • Another impressive win from Top Notch, yet another Henderson Triumph contender, owned again by Munir, didn't beat much but did it well

                          • Maybe top notch is reason Daryl thought Bristol should wait for Aintree

                              Petite Parisienne

Petite Parisienne put up a really nice performance to win the Gala Retail Spring Juvenile Hurdle at Leopardstown on Sunday.

Settled back in the field by Bryan Cooper through the early stages of the race, the Gigginstown filly made nice progress around the outside to move in behind Kalkir at the second last flight. She tracked the Willie Mullins horse into the home straight, picked up impressively to join him on the run to the last, jumped that obstacle well and battled on well up the run-in to get home by two lengths.

The fact that the 40/1 shot Prussian Eagle finished a close-up third may hold the form back a little in many people’s eyes, but Charles O’Brien’s horse is progressive and this was a career-best from him on the fastest ground that he has encountered over hurdles. Also, the front three pulled miles clear, and the winning time was good, the fastest comparative time on a top class day’s racing, almost three seconds faster than the handicap hurdle and almost bang on Racing Post par.

A winner and a close-up third in a listed race over a mile and a half on the flat for Jean-Claude Rouget, this was just the Montmartre filly’s second run over hurdles for Willie Mullins. She probably should have won on her debut too at Punchestown, she just allowed another Gigginstown horse, Chatham House Rule, too much leeway in front and she couldn’t reel him in. She had that horse well behind her on Sunday.

The Spring Juvnenile Hurdle is an excellent pointer to the Triumph Hurdle, having produced the last three winners, Countrywide Flame, Our Conor and Tiger Roll. Petite Parisienne is a leading player in the Triumph Hurdle now. She showed battling qualities on Sunday that should stand to her at Cheltenham and she handled the better ground well. Fillies have a good record in the Triumph Hurdle from minimal representation, and she should progress again for Sunday’s experience.
