The Pat Flynn trained Atan landed a gamble in the opener at Roscommon this evening, the Railway Bar 3yo Maiden Hurdle (the first race of its kind this year), as he scored under Davy Russell.
Available at 7/1 in a place this morning the son of Alhaarth opened on-course at just 7/2, the price at which he was returned.

Third at the halfway stage, he was ridden in fourth at the third last and was right on the heels of the leaders before the last flight.

He hit the front on the run-in and despite showing signs of greenness he went on to score by a length.

Pat Flynn, who also owns the winner, said afterwards: "I said to Davy (Russell) before the race that this is a special horse.

"Davy said he won with a lot of ease. He might be going to the Doncaster Sale at the beginning of next month.

"He won so easily that he was looking around him near the finish. He's a lovely horse and he will be even better in a better race, they weren’t going fast enough for him.

"He will stay all day and he is as good a horse as ever I had to be honest about it. He cost a lot of money as a yearling."k

Hargam got a mention in one Jump ahead and on sporting life yesterday

It is early days to be thinking about the Triumph Hurdle but Nicky Henderson will be seeking to win it for a record sixth time next March. The head of Seven Barrows has taken charge of the lightly raced HARGAM, who won over 12 furlongs at Longchamp in May for Alain de Royer-Dupre in France.

Beaten half a length by Group One-placed Teletext on his debut at the same track on his debut, he was almost certainly inconvenienced by the drop back in trip at Maisons-Laffitte last time in Listed company. With Champion Hurdler Binocular now enjoying his retirement, Henderson and JP McManus may have found a ready-made replacement. His jumping bow is eagerly anticipated.

Unanimite

One of those to have already run well this season was the impressive Unanimite who has already made a big impression on the juvenile division. His recent win at Market Rasen was a classy first run for the yard and he is already a 33/1 shot for the Triumph Hurdle and Pipe was impressed with the run of the French import without getting carried away.

"Its early days for the 3-year-old horses but he (Unanimite) put up a good performance at Market Rasen," Pipe added. "He sets the standard so far but there is a long way to go and we will have to see how he goes on softer ground."

Ricci gave a good word for Kalkir yesterday

"Kalkir is three and ran a great race in a newcomers race at Auteuil when only just behind Bonito Du Berlais, who has gone on to win four on the trot, including a Grade 1 by 12 lengths in the newcomers race at Auteuil. He's one we are really looking forward to, and is hopefully a Triumph Hurdle horse."

HARGAM made a pleasing debut to finish second in the Triumph Hurdle Trial. I’d say that the first three home are the best juvenile hurdlers so far this season.

Golden Doyen set the standard among juvenile hurdlers, in Britain at least, prior to Cheltenham and only raised that bar with his tenacious defeat of Hargam last Saturday. He’s got a great attitude and it may not matter that he had a tougher race than the runner-up should they meet again, especially given he was conceding 4lb.

Yet it was noticeable that Geraghty had at least half a mind on Hargam having a positive initial experience of British hurdling. Nicky Henderson’s charge is also bred to like better ground. It was an encouraging start from third-placed Baraka De Thaix, who wasn’t beaten far.

Golden Doyen’s exploits have paid a compliment to his debut conqueror, Karezak, but of course there’s no guarantee that the latter has made the same progress since.

Other horses in this division to be aware of at this stage are Karezak’s stablemate, Chatez, who might be more suited to speedy Aintree than Cheltenham, and Stars Over The Sea, trained like Baraka De Thaix by Pipe, who was a wide-margin winner at Ludlow last Thursday.

Hargam will come on for the run and looks one to keep on the right side, two juvenile hurdlers in Ireland who's jumps debut are eagerly awaited are Timiyan who I've mentioned before, ex Dermot Weld trained bought for 470,000 euros by Jp McManus, Dermot didn't waste time by going and buying Behesht for 525,000 euros, both should be of interest under there new codes
