Newcastle’s Eider Chase is one of the longer races in the current horseracing program.
While a notable prize in it’s own right the the 4 mile 1 furlong marathon is seen as a trial for the Aintree Grand National and Scottish National.
Jockey Timmy Murphy completed the Eider-Grand National double on Comply or Die in 2008.
Murphy has also steered the 2009 winner Merigo to dual Scottish National success but did not complete that same race double in the same year. The 1995 Eider winner Willsford did double up in the same year becoming the oldest ever winner of the Scottish National in the process
